    I'm glad you're self aware enough to realise this is a bit of an overanalysis! Watching this I was reminded of the famous (infamous?) interview with Tatsuya Endo where he stated that he created Spy X Family as rehabilitation work and how he wrote the Forgers to appeal to a mass audience. It's interesting to see how people can form such strong connections to characters that were seemingly created with such a shallow goal in mind. Perhaps an idea for a future essay!

    Yeah, I'm not going to pretend like any of what I saw in this show was intended in any way. I didn't end up mentioning this but in the middle of writing the script, I did read that interview and I thought it was pretty interesting coincidence that I picked up on themes of being disillusioned with a job when that's probably what Endo was feeling when he wrote it

    @@KyleRobes Didn't think of that! Perhaps Endo put more of himself into Loid than he realizes himself. I haven't read the manga but perhaps the story will take a more serious note as time passes.

    SPOILER ALERT! This video is spot on. Loid never had a choice in being a spy or not. In the past, he joined the army under a fake identity despite being underage. He quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant. It was then that WISE scouted him. They saw that he faked his identity and saw potential, so a man was sent to tell him he had "two" choices: become a spy, or be reported for being underage. I put "two" in quotations because, this isn't really two choices. Wise knew he was determined to avenge his family and friends, so he obviously doesn't want to drop out of the military. So, Loid was forced to join Wise. He was then trained by Handler, and here we are now. Loid never had a chance to grow up. Loid never had the choice to choose any other occupation. Now, here, I have a theory: what if Wise planned for Loid to have a real family? I know this comment will get buried, but hey, the comments section exists to share ideas, so why not?

    The most interesting part of Spy x Family to me is Anya's mother. By that I do not necessarily mean her biological mother nor do I mean Yor. Anya is a very sweet girl with an open funny personality, that does not happen by accident. She must have had a parental figure that loved her dearly. Anya cries at the mention of her mother during the interview process at her school. I am going to theorize that at the research facility there was a mother figure that took care of Anya and loved her. Someone who probably gave her that doll and fed her peanuts as a treat. I think that person is the one that rescued Anya from the research facility and set Anya up with her first family. I'm sure Anya's mother would have loved to adopt her but for reasons out of her control it was too dangerous. Most likely she was under surveillance from authorities because of Anya's disappearance. Now the real interesting part is what happens when years later this person finds out that Anya had been put in an orphanage and had been adopted out to multiple miserable families, all resulting in failure. She would be horrified and immediately try to find out Anya's current whereabouts. And what would be Anya's reaction when she has to choose between her current family and the mother that raised her as a child? Of course this is speculation, but someone must have saved Anya from research faculty and that person may still be alive. Wondering if that little girl they saved is still alive as well.

    Personally, as an author by trade, I don't think you've over analyzed at all. One of the goals in character writting is a simple premise with a complex result. Writting is not something done with an elaborate plan. You do have a plan, but all the neuances and details are things that either result from making tweaks one rewrite after another, or are things you discover in the process more so than you actually create them. Personally, I think everything you've said about Loid is more or less right. You can discount it wasn't part of a preproduction spreadsheet, but I don't agree that a lack of planning a result invalidates it. My favorite characters I have ever created are the ones who surprised me because they didn't follow my plan. They turned into people of their own and when people ask me how I wrote someone so complex I have to say, "I didn't. I just found him, and wrote doewn what he said and did."

    Cheesy shit's too real, I am getting teary eyes listening to this at 5am playing minecraft :') Btw I dont believe overanalysing is a bad thing at all, after all big shows are often popular BECAUSE they make each person feel things differently, and not just any show can do that, it needs to be funny and entertaining enough while staying realistic and relatable to nudge your thoughts around and make you feel things beyond what the author meant, things YOU want to feel and think deeply about

    I have reread Spy x Family 3 times, and I am completely sure what you talk about here is in some way intended. In nearly every scene he gets praised or somehow validated for his achievements by Yor and Anya, he brushes it off, but can't completely and starts to soak some of it in. He obviously does find fulfilment in his job, but I think his mindset(persona, if you would) of the ultimate spy is ultimately what prevents him from being attached to his family, for the ultimate spy has no strings to tie him down, no weak links to be taken advantage of. I think you're heading a bit off the beaten path with that second part though.

    Even if it is overanalysis, it is definitely a valid reading. Thank you for your awesome video! Somewhat related, do you think the abundance of "found family" shows and movies is related to the decay of the traditional family structure in society? SpyXFamily has a pretty traditional family structure with the "found family" theme in it, so was curious your thoughts

  • @KyleRobes

    @KyleRobes

    Жыл бұрын

    I think it can be pretty hard to gauge why certain trends appear in media. If I had to guess though, I think this has more to do with the fact the idea of a "traditional nuclear family" has become somewhat outdated. It's not that family isn't important, but these types of stories tend to show how varied and different families are. They don't have to conform to a certain look or act in a specific way to be valuable, and found family stories embrace that

  • @rishraff6528

    @rishraff6528

    Жыл бұрын

    @@KyleRobes I agree that media trends are only really discernable in a retrospective manner. But definitely appreciate your response. I think "found family" theme speaks more to necessity of family, that people love and support you and you in turn do the same for them, and obviously that can exist outside the "traditional nuclear family". Would you associate the "outdated" idea with the decay/loss of that structure, or do you think they are different? Obviously, I am writing from my own perspective (American) where there is a lot of divide in the country on the fundamental level about what family structure should or can look like, and if those are all equivalent. If I were to guess about how it looks in Japan, the concern socially seems to be the lack of formation of any structures, with the declining birth rate and what not. I guess what I am driving at, is the found family in SpyXFamily that is built around the traditional structure (Father, mother, and child) a way of affirming the traditional structure while embracing the themes of found family? Hopefully that all made sense and I appreciate your consideration!

  • @KyleRobes

    @KyleRobes

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I think we're both coming from an American perspective when it comes to this topic. To be a bit more specific with my views, I think the "outdated" aspect of the nuclear family is somewhat related to the "decay" of that structure, but to me that has to do more with disillusionment with tradition versus that structure being lost. When there's such a strong societal pressure to adhere to the look of a "traditional family", I think people can become disillusioned when that structure doesn't live up to what was promised. People uphold the look of the institution without understanding why that institution existed in the first place, mainly to provide support. Stories with fake families kind of explore that idea: people building the look of a family without understanding it. Found family stories in general showcase that family structures can be found in many different places. What some might see as the decay of the family, I see as a transformation. In terms of what Spy Family is saying in the context of what's going on in the Japan, I can't really say. I don't know enough about the nuances of what people are feeling there for me to say anything about that.

If I may be so forward as to make a suggestion, I think offering some anecdotes about your experiences with happiness VS dissatisfaction could have boosted the video's ability to connect with the viewer on an emotional level. Multiple times as you discussed how Loid is relatable, I thought you were going to discuss your own experiences with job dissatisfaction. I don't bring this up to be nosy, but rather because I think a viewer may not be able to connect with Loid, but they could connect with you and your stories, which would then allow them to tangentially connect to Loid, too. What kept coming to my mind whilst hearing you talk about Lloyd and the confliction work and happiness was how it related heavily to coming to terms with my Trans identity, as well as lining up with how often we use similar language to talk about the struggle of conforming. Honestly it sounded like an older Trans person talking about how they felt figuring themselves out. Specifically this section hit so hard - "Having to decide between what you want, and what you've been told your entire life is what you need to do. A choice that forces you to accept you've been lying to yourself your entire life and confirms feelings you've tried to supress for all that time" It's so raw and relatable, from childhood you're told how you have to act and be from all around you based on how you're born and if it persists can cause you to supress your feelings of wanting to be different, to live differently and to present as a different gender, the longer you do it the more of a job it becomes, the more tiring it is and the more it saps away your happiness, and when you start to realise that you have to come to terms with the fact you were avoiding it or lying to yourself for your entire life... But, once you do, you can move on and find happiness.

    If we are happy in the present, then we do not need to regret our past. In short; I disagree with the comment made at 16:00 that looking back at his past would raise a terrifying thought. Once Loid realises that he is happy with Anya and Yor, then I don't think he would look back at his past and regret on his actions or contemplate the possible life he could have had. All the actions and missions has shaped his life. The spy job has made him possible to meet Yor and Anya. If he is happy now, then I doubt he should look back at the past regret it, as it is our past that shapes our future. Rather than reflecting on his past I think he will begin to think about the future; think about how he can keep the ones he loves safe. There is no need to think too much about the past and regretting our actions. The past is the past, we can't change the events that have already transpired, so we can learn from our mistakes and move forward. Once we realise that we shouldn't worry about things that we can't influence, then we begin to stress a lot less in life. I see many people recently worrying about the virus, the inflation, the war in Europe etc. however, there is no reason for the common individual to worry about it. What can the averge guy do to stop the war, stop inflation, stop the virus. Only once we begin to work together to shape our future; we can begin to worry and hope. The climate change. What can a single guy do to influence that? Nothing, a single person can't solve climate change. But if everyone works together, then we can begin to think about it and to shape the future. Once society begins to worry; we as an individual can begin to worry. What I am trying to say is: I think Loid would be happy about his work as a spy rather than troubled; he would have made the world safer for Anya and Yor. He would have learned skill and made connections he can use to protect them and make them happy. Enough rambling for me; I'm glad you are back and it was a nice video :-)

    In general, I do agree with that sentiment. The thing I was trying to highlight comes from a "grind" mentality, which to me can sometimes do more harm then good. I think with Loid, it was a good way to explore some of the ways people can justify staying at jobs they don't like or may not have wanted, and the crisis that can come when someone starts to question why they endured that grind in the first place. To be honest, I really don't think this is what Endo intended with Loid. This is probably going to end up being a story about Loid reaffirming the reasons why he became a spy after becoming disillusioned by it, which is why I was very close to scrapping the video altogether. Like I said, this thing is all vibes haha

    I love your analysis of Loid. I want to offer a slightly different spin. As the series starts, Loid is in some ways estranged from himself, and he's also Batman/Buddha. On the latter front, he has suffered and seen others suffer mightily, and has resolved to prevent such suffering as it's within his power to do. Admirable! However, on the former, he's basically anhedonic-he takes no pleasure or joy in what he does. He can say, "I'm satisfied with the mission's results", but he can't have FUN. He's a finely tuned instrument of his organization, but his emotional heart is hidden from everyone, including himself. As a spy, that's a virtue, because he's able to pretend to be anyone and anything that much better without his real feelings slipping through and tripping him up. But as a person, he's an emotional zombie, dissociated from his heart's wellsprings and his ability to be (as you put it so well)... happy for his own sake. Not only is this story about Loid (and Yor, and Anya) all finding family, and about them all having the face the risks of trusting people they care about with their deepest and most frightening truths (hello queer allegory), and a story of Loid having to come to the fork in the road about the life he wants to live in the world outside (as you demonstrate so well), it's also about each of them (and especially Loid) coming to terms with and healing the psychic damage they've come to take for granted. Loid is re-discovering his heart, his INTRINSIC motivation; Yor is (probably) going to have to confront conflicting identities/loyalties to her (mostly benign) found family and her (mostly abusive) national/blood family, personified in Yuri; and Anya the psychic will presumably have to learn that Loid and Yor both genuinely love her, and that she's not just an object (science experiment/spy mission tool/etc.) to her current caretaker/parents. Each has profound lessons to learn about being whole and happy humans and (as corny as it is) the meaning and practice of real love and constructive familial relationships. Thanks for reading, and please keep on doing what you do. I got here from your Bocchi video, and you're doing great work. 😃

    While I think your point in this video is amazing and is good for life in general, I don't necessarily agree with all that you think about Twilight. I think that Twilight is absolutely broken at the beginning of the story, but I don't think he actually is suffering or hates his job. In the manga it is very clear that, even though he has to, he wants to become a spy. While this is because of all the things you said about him not wanting to return to his life before, I actually think it's more about his desire to make sure no child has to go through what he had to. He dedicated himself to that goal and that is what drives him, not necessity or WISE making him do it. I think that the main reason Loid needs Yor and Anya is because he doesn't really feel anything before he meets them and is almost completely devoid of emotion. The only thing that really motivates Loid at the beginning of the story is making sure that no one has to feel what he felt. Without this, he is pretty much a husk of a human being with almost no real wants or feelings. When he meets Anya and Yor what little emotion he has starts to resurface. He still denies this however because after dedicating his entire life to a single purpose, anything else would seem impossible to him. I think that this is really important as it shows a big problem with people in general. We can dedicate our lives to a goal and lose sight of what really fulfills us: family, friends, joy, anger, sadness. Without these there really is no point to life and it's really important that we don't lose sight of them and become what Loid has almost reached at the beginning. Loid also shows us how hard it can be to accept these things and how important it is to help people who are in the same mindset. (I would also like to say that this is my interpretation and yours is still valid, I just wanted to express my thoughts on the subject)

    Wait - there were a few panels in the war back story that explained Loid didn't have a choice: Become a Spy Be ratted out by the spy that discovered him. And he'd be sent to prison. He chose to agree to become a spy when his childhood friends were killed in a botched mission. He literally had no one. The remnants of his old life now dead and buried. Edit: I missed the point of your thesis. Sorry.

    Yeah, I should have mentioned this, but I only talked about what was covered in the show. I ended up reading the manga after I had finished the script and it was cool seeing that my hunch was somewhat correct

    Ok but the real question is if you read the thumbnail as "keep happy" or "keep x happy"

    Do I want to work my way up to a PhD in molecular biology and slave away trying to solve world issues and help with the climate crisis? Or enjoy my time and embrace happiness with others? I feel like your "overanalysis" really touches on this and there's no doubt in my mind that I will view Loid in a different light, more similar to my own. Over the past couple months I've come to realize it's not black and white, and swaying too far to either side (pursuing dreams vs happiness) is unhealthy but also has a high risk-reward ratio. How far you want to go on this spectrum is up to you, but the best thing to always seems to fall in the middle of the spectrum of dreams to happiness and it's not satisfying to go with the norm and be "average." In the end, I think only time will tell how far I want to take my dreams. This concludes my ted talk reply if u go to A&M

    The thing that hooked me on this show and why I say the X in spy x family is the conflict of his life as a spy and his life as a family man why I found alot of the later half of the season a bit boring because it was mostly anya school life hope we get more of episodes like 12 or the yuri episodes in the next part

    Ur skills r amazing and u have some really interesting and valid points. My only negative thoughts after watching a bunch of ur videos is the over use of saying smth slowly since it should only be used when smth dramatic is comming and u use it almost 10 times every video. And also u should be carefull what u say in that last sentence for example the words keep it are not appealing in anyway and r even quite annoying. U could have changed it to stay or even said the question is... Will he keep it instead of will...he..keep it. 13:02 this part was great for exampl

    So basically what im hearing is that Loid is an allegory for transness. like for example staying in his job is the same as staying as one's agab. Actually, this reminds me of Abigail Thorn's coming out video.
