What John C. Reilly Learned in Acting School

Actor, comedian, singer, screenwriter, and producer John C. Reilly ("Step Brothers," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "The Sisters Brothers") has been an actor for more than 30 years. While he did some acting in high school, it was his experiences as a student at the conservatory at DePaul University in Chicago that helped him take his love for acting to the next level.
In this video from a Backstage Live interview, John gave us a bit of insight into some of his biggest takeaways from acting school and how speech classes may have played a big role in helping boost his career.

I went through this same experience- moving from Kentucky to Montana- my speech was a BIG deal. People said the most ridiculous things to me- I just realized to be what I want in life I need to “dress” my voice for the part. That was my “My Fair Lady” experience- your speech matters.

Thank you for that insight Mr. Reilly. I have a son who has a high interest in the arts and theatre is his passion. We are currently looking at colleges theatre study. I will have him check out DePaul. I have a lot of respect for your work especially your role in Chicago. You are dynamic and you really are a superior actor! Bravo! Also my son too is in a Catholic school. God bless and may you have continued success!

Yeah man, gotta squash your ego…… And even get out of your comfort zone… you don’t have to compromise your humanity…. flexibility and imagination I think are the keys you want someone to help mold you once you get different techniques you can pick and choose what you want like I train guys on the job… if they’re full of piss and vinegar… you won’t be able to train them….! I look at it like a job … you’re either an old guy on a new job or a new guy on a new job! Even though I’ve had some experience ….. I would consider myself an old guy on a new job… so I cannot add my time in life with my time on the job and make my own seniority.
