What Jimmy Lai’s trial reveals about press freedom in Hong Kong | BBC Newsnight

The trial of Hong Kong billionaire Jimmy Lai has attracted international attention after he was put on trial again at the end of last year.
Mr Lai founded the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily and was on the frontlines of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests.
The media tycoon was imprisoned in December 2022 for fraud. He is now on trial for sedition and collusion with foreign forces, which he has pleaded not guilty to.
The BBC's Danny Vincent has been looking at what Mr Lai’s most recent trial reveals about press freedoms in Hong Kong.

Jimmy Lai has been jailed for over 3 years without a trial merely because he exercised freedom of speech and press "promised" by the Basic Law. He was charged for behaviors that were conducted before the evil National Security Law was imposed on Hong Kong people. Jimmy Lai represented the voices and values of many HongKongers. Free Jimmy Lai 💪💪

What do you know about the basic law or the national security law even? The security law has the same components as ones in the U.S, Germany, France and the U.K to name a few and is less strict in some ways.

what does pro-democracy in this case even mean? Democracy means a system of government in which state power is vested in the people or the general population of a state, in china they elect local and lower government officials just like we do in the UK or Canada, Australia and New Zealand. What they want is a democracy based on the US system which is absolute nonsense, what sane person would want that for their country and or city. China is more democratic than the UK and US and all those so called Western democracies, in China they represent the views of its people, the British government dont.
