What it’s REALLY like to work for the Civil Service (FULL REVIEW)

i made a video at the start of the summer talking about how i initially got involved with the civil service, the application process and that i was going to be working for them over the summer. now that i’ve finished i wanted to talk about what it’s actually like to work there. all the highs, the lows, the amazing opportunities, the people. i hope this is helpful and provides some insight into the civil service. any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. until next week…

    Hi Chelsie! Really helpful video. I’m applying to do law next year but don’t really know if the career is for me, I’m more interested in it academically. I am really interested in the Diplomatic Fast Stream (though I still obviously have a while lol). I wish I could apply for the SDIP but my dad’s self-employed which I find odd because that doesn’t mean I’m high income. But I’ll still try my hardest and hope that maybe they’ll change the criteria by the time I’d be applying haha

    Hi! thank you. best of luck for the application process. law is a brilliant foundational degree for life so don't worry if you're like me and don't want to practice it. you've just gotta be prepared to study it for three years (and boy is it hard work!). if you're interested in government, you can always apply to work at your local council or get work experience with them. it could give you a better understanding of government as a whole!

    After TWO WHOLE YEARS of being stuck on a reserve list (God, I HATE those lists!) and having my hopes built up of an eventual job offer, I finally received an email from the department in question this morning informing me that the reserve list has now "expired" and that I will NOT be offered a job. Needless to say, I am NOT best pleased at the moment! They should scrap these ridiculous reserve lists altogether, as they build up applicants' hopes too much.

    Manager gives you a project (ON A FRIDAY) with a follow-up meeting on the immediate monday (lol) on ENGAGEMENT and COMMUNICATION and then they don't even bother turning up on the follow-up meeting or pick up the phone. Literal bonus points earned from them suddenly gaining interest when a senior grade does. You just described the national mentality on managerial grades in the Civil Service. It is genuinely embarrassing to hear someone fresh to it immediately be subject to it. Also on another note I enjoyed your video but it's just clickbait in the sense that this is just what it's like doing SDIP, not working in the Civil Service. As you mentioned multiple times, you didn't really do any work and trust me, the average civil servant doesn't get to visit all the major government departments in a week and you're lucky if you can shadow someone once a year.

    Agreed on this, I worked for the civil service and I have to say nothing there is permanent, you have to keep on applying to different roles, most of them you get with experience, and if you are low skilled you STAY there unless you have contacts!

    Hey Chelsie, I've stumbled across your video because I'm interested in applying for the fast stream programme, do you have any other advice on where to find out what it's like to work in the civil service? Also, is it a problem if your degree subject isn't directly linked to the department you hope to work in, for example if you didn't study law but wanted to go into the ministry of justice?

  • @ChelsieAngeles

    @ChelsieAngeles

    4 жыл бұрын

    hey! your degree subject doesn't matter unless you want to do a stream that requires a certain degree. best bet is to talk to people on linkedin, get work experience at local council or with an MP (next best thing other than E/SDIP to see what gov work is like) and do a lot of research!

    Hi, I'm thinking of a career switch but am in full time work so won't necessarily have the time to get a summer internship or work experience at the civil service.Do many people get into civil service w/o having done an internship or work experience there?Also, do you know if a masters degree is likely to be more valued?Thank you!

  • @ChelsieAngeles

    Hi! A very small percentage of civil servants did the summer internship. Most apply via the fast stream route. Not sure if masters degrees are more valued. Will be best to email the civil service directly via their website to ask!

    Lol listening to Chelsie reminds me of how a colleague of mine who was working in the MOJ had.. her experience was very similar, and yes there are REAL BITCHES there! people really just see over you, for me having worked on a lower skill level was enough, I would never work in the MOJ not worth my time.. thank God I had that experience before starting Uni.. I would definitely go into a Law firm thousand times than the MOJ, at least you get the experience you really want, unless your jobsworth and stuff like the MOJ interests you

    Chelsie, do you know much about how the UK Civil Reserve list works? I ask this because I passed an interview for AO Caseworker in a Liverpool dept back in March 2019 and scored 18. Consequently, even though I have been put on a reserve list, I STILL have not been offered a job. Due to Covid, they told me that the list expiry date has been extended to the end of July 2020. However, I still have had no job offer. So would you factor in my score of 18 (don't know how high up that would make me on the list) as being the reason why they still haven't offered me a job?

    In that case, they must have had a helluva lot of other candidates who scored much higher than I did! No wonder they never offered me a position. I hate those damn reserve lists!

    @@kss1190 @KS S no worries so I am currently a policy officer I can email over some tips if helpful. One thing I would say is read the competencies they are assessing in the interview and mind map all your best examples for them and choose the most strong example and have it ready. Also be ready for follow up questions. Read the civil service profiles and competencies you can find online also. Also one thing all civil service interview they will ask you one question they don't mark you on something like ' what do you do in your spare time essentially they are assessing your behaviour and personality here even though they don't mark this. Hope this helps and good luck!! 🕊
