This is all so true. When you have your own property it is constant repairs and maintenance. Often, trial and error leads the way. I started with two horses, then one had a surprise foal. I got a couple of goats to help control the weeds, and then got a donkey to protect the goats from coyotes. Each animal has its own care needs that have to be met. I love every bit of it, but it is exhausting sometimes and I cant just “go” somewhere without making sure my animals are all fed, watered, and safe. Love your videos!

We have our horse at our farm. I love it there's one thing I would like to point out, as a beginner to Horsemanship, having your horse stapled somewhere he gives you plenty of exposure to other people with experience. Doing it all on your own for the first time ever owning a horse I have learned a lot in the last few months.

I have a hard time finding time to ride, especially in the winter; as all of my time outside of work involves taking care of my two horses and 4 mini ; mucking poop in the corral, picking hooves, feeding, keeping an eye out for icy areas, breaking up ice and removing or putting straw over it (I'd hate for them to get hurt slipping on ice)... etc. etc. I am grateful to have electricity this winter, as my floating heater in their water trough has been a blessing... no frozen drinking water and everybody now knows how to use the auto waterer. I'll be happy when we have longer daylight again! (we live in Colorado)

I don't have my horses at my house, so I do the next best thing, I rent a field and do self care. This is how I manage. I have the field split up. One area they always have access to. The other 3 sections are used for a week at a time. I used electric fencing to split up the areas and can take it down between the sections for riding. I'm not into showing, so this is all I need. I collected broken 4x4 fence posts. With these and some rope, I was able to build a 60 ft round pen. I leave it open so the horses can graze. I have a riding mower and a manure spreader. When I take them out of an area of the field, I collect all the manure. Depending on the time of year, I'll mow. This also helps to keep the weeds down. I then spread the manure and go over it with an old, chain link fence gate. This helps it to break down quicker. The field came with a 48x12 run in. The first 8 ft is a separate room. This is for my feed and tack. I put a wall up on the last 10 ft. This is my hay stall. I can fit over 100 bales in there. The rest of the 30 ft is divided into thirds by the placement of 2 gates. I close them for feeding, and open them back up when they're done. This has worked very well for me for the past several years. I'm planning on getting my own place soon, and will probably do a similar set up once I move.

Thank you for this video! I’m 9 months into having my own horses on my property and doing everything myself. I wouldn’t change a thing, but it would be nice to have had a good comprehension of reality and not just the fantasy in my head. A friend told me horses know how much is in your bank account and will need you to spend even more, hehe. Fencing, feed, vet bills, poop management, barn and stalls, trailer, trough heaters, etc. never ends. But I love my (two buddy sour) boys. 😂

I have a mini donkey now, instead of second, or third horse, as I have in the past. (They live with me on my property. I live alone. My horse loves his donkey! I would never have a horse alone.) Until recently, I have boarded my horses at fancy barns,. Now I am doing things on my own here at home --WHAT an eye-opener. So fun, but so much work, and SO many mistakes. Ugh. Thank you so much for this helpful and comforting video.

Having "done this" - horses at home, ha ha - for over 20 years now, it was refreshing to see your video. I really enjoyed it. A reminder that we are all in the same boat and it can be hard and even discouraging sometimes. My first horse died at 26 without me ever riding her. I had to work and take care of the place and commute and that was all. I still have horse at home and would not change a thing! Living with them is special and I hope I will ride more again when I retire. 💖

All true. We moved to our own property two years ago.... we knew the care for the horses would be a lot, but were pretty surprised at the care for the lawn (being rural, there aren't landscapers very close by)..... THAT has been the biggest shock; caring for trees that shed leaves, branches, etc... caring for the fencing, caring for weed control and doing everything possible to grow quality grass.... It's a lot. And, yes, we have been here two years and still dont have an arena BUT it is next. This is great to remind people.

This was relatable! I have two horses at my house and it is such a blessing. Can be a challenge, but totally worth it!! My biggest struggle is my herd bound pony. My big horse doesn’t really care if his pal leaves, but the pony throws a fit every time I take his friend out. Also, I love the names of your kittens! So clever!

I just wanted to thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos! They have been a huge help to me with the horse I have been working with (hopefully going to lease him) who had a lot of behavioral issues manely with respect and pressure, after just 3 months of working with him and lots of guidance from you and others he is a completely different horse. I can’t and don’t want to imagine a life without him. Thank you so so Much!

I was spending $100 a week in gas driving to the boarding place, plus 425 a month for boarding and lessons. That was fairly cheap for this area, and it was a lean to closed in stall and paddock w a little bit of mud issues. Arena was outside with no sand.

I had horses at home for over twenty five years. I loved it, but it took so much away from my life. Everyday twice a day I had to be there to feed and tend to them. It ended up costing me a lot of money too. It’s fun, but don’t let it take away from anything else you also like to do and sometimes boarding is fun because you get to interact and ride with other people

I've looked at 4 farms. Passed on all of them because I saw the disrepair like the barn or fencing. Big no. That stuff costs 6 figures at the drop of a hat. Going to see one this weekend that has all the things and in good repair or so the ad seems! Dry lot, self service dutch doors, fencing in good repair, dry storage for hay and tractor, fully working and safe electric in barn, close barn/house/storage and zero walking from stall to pasture and a professionally installed outdoor arena are musts. A well thought-out property layout is a must to save time. Doing a very complete inspection of wells, arena and barn before even thinking of an offer. Also making certain there's a dependable waste removal service in the area for manure pile. After all that, 5 figs in the bank for the unknown repairs or improvements, the stuff after inspection we might not even think of. I assume the WORST. Plan to add auto grain feeders on the stalls on timers. Plan to get a round bale feeder (round bale will be bought year round). Likely adding cameras in the stalls or dry lot. Adding wall-mounted hay nets. All of this to help minimize the work. 35 years experience here and the lesser of the evils seems to be to buy a property as the boarding barns 1. have mostly been sold and 2. what's left has proven absolutely terrible for safety, lack of care and service. I'm the polar bear on the melting ice and never planned to buy a farm but it's that or sell the horses.

I've never boarded but folks I know that did had trouble transitioning. Also you have to care medically for them and depending on your location they may not get treatment as quickly than if they were at a barn. We are learning to be vets along with land managers and handyworkers 🤣

Oh, and YES. it is all worth it to know every minute where your horses are and how they are doing. THAT makes it worth all the hard work to have our own place. Even though we boarded at a beautiful place with on-sight German trainers stuff still happens (as it does) with the horses. The worry is so much lower if you can just walk out and check on them at 2 in the morning if a sudden storm comes up, etc.

Nice video! Definitely good to be grounded in the reality of what it means to own your own land and to have your horses on it. I think every equestrian dreams of having a sprawling estate and tons of horses, which is fine, but it definitely means having to do a lot of hard work to keep it up and running smoothly! How was the adjustment owning your own horse farm and keeping up with your day job? (Or is your day job connected to the farm?) Does your husband have any animals of his own?

I’m getting a small property, the places we are looking at are between 6-20 acres. I’m going to have to replace a bunch of fencing no matter which property we decide to get. It’s all barbed wire at the moment and I don’t feel like paying the vet bills for injuries or replacing the wires. Also, from personal experience it hurts like hell once you get stuck in it and I don’t want my horses to go through that. Another thing I’ll be doing is getting chickens. They are really good for compost and breaking down cow and horse poop, plus I can sell eggs. I can cycle pastures to manage grass. When it comes to riding it depends a lot on the weather. There’s no arena on any of the properties we are considering and I don’t feel like building one. However, all 3 properties are on the outskirts of a few provincial parks due to the 20 lakes in the area. All these parks have riding trials that I can ride through on weekends or holidays.

i currently don't have my own horse but honestly i'd prefer to do livery especially for my first horse as i won't be buying a second or more any time soon if i had one. I'd like my horse to be surrounded by tons of horses rather than one other or two, have some sort of herd even if it's just them in their sight as i know some horses will have their own field with no field buddy (stallions, horses who seem to be aggressive or just people not wanting to have their horse in contact with a horse they don't know etc.) Just want them to be able to see other horses and livery is better for that. I wouldn't want to have them at my own house but they're the only horse there yk. Plus livery lets you be around other people and make friends ofc.

Hi! I have a question for you I hope u can answer. I have a barn at my house with 2 stalls (they still need to be built but there is a perfect area and it's a small barn so it's the only place stalls will fit) the only problem is the stalls are almost 10x10 key word is almost they are more like 9.8 ftx9.8 ft. I want to get a horse in the near future but I don't think it would be suitable for a 16 hand horse to be a stall that small. I've asked my parents to try and extend the barn a bit so it can be bigger but they won't budge because they think the horse will be fine (they don't really know anything about horses, they think they do but they don't) what is your opinion on this? What should I do?

35+ years experience here. So boarding is getting really hard these days. Most farms have sold and very little is left in many areas of USA and the world to be honest. What's left is just what you're experiencing. People who provide poor care and either don't know what they are doing or don't care for your financial asset and medical liability (your horse). Cuts probably mean horses are not getting along and in close quarters and that's happening at pasture. Yes horses need to be fed at the same time daily. Why? Because ulcers start fast. Horses produce acid 24/7 and there must be a fiber ball in the belly all the time, else the acid causes ulcers. Feeding at various times does cause acid and stress issues too. What you want is 24/7 access to quality hay and minimum amount of grain (starch in grain causes ulcers). I show dressage, national level, I train my own, I know too much at this point to board, but I'm stuck in the same situations and in high anxiety all the time as my horse gets injured and I foot many 4 figure bills all day long from totally preventable issues. Welcome to the club! It sucks. For most of my life I had dependable high quality barns to board with great riding and training facilities in the 80s, 90s and early/mid 2000s but it all broke lose in my area about 2016-2017. Everything started to get sold and developed as boomers retired and went to FL. I've been looking for my own farm but we don't have 7 figures and I need proper facilities as I'm show-centric. Seeing farm #4 this week over the past THREE YEARS as that's all that's been in my commuting distance from work and in my price range. Trying to survive before I just sell my horse and call this hobby dead. But this is my life and my passion. I just spent 8k on ulcers caused by barn abusing the horse causing high stress and not feeding enough hay.

"Round Bales" have low nutrition, very stemmy last cut. What happens is, your horse will lose it's topline and feet stop growing without the nutrients. I ended up with 4 figures in vet bills over a barn that fed only round bales (feet quickly deteriorated, stopped growing and formed a sole crack which needed x rays and special shoeing until he got good nutrition again and healed up and started growing hoof again). You'll want to feed high quality square bales 2x a day alfalfa or grass mix. The round bale at pasture or dry lot is excellent for keeping their bellies full, avoid ulcers etc, but not going to fill nutrition needs. So ideally you have it all - round bale and square bale - free choice hay 24/7. You can talk to a nutritionists and they'll go over all of this with you. You can avoid grain if you feed quality hay and if your horse keeps good weight on that way but the hay is more $ than the grain. Minimizing grain is generally a good thing to avoid the starch helping ulcers to form. Depends on your horse.

Depending where you live the property tax of having the land could be as much or more than the board. But at least you get equity / appreciation with the land *shrug*

I could’ve have said it better, owning land increased my horse care while decreasing my ride time. Priorities…..

And when feeding you know to watch their diet for too much sugar. BUT no one ever tells you how much is too much.... Oh, and when you are sick, you get to feed them too. No days off from taking care of your four legged children.

Mine seemed to have real problems with too much sugar on lush spring grass and my boarding barn turned out 10 hours a day! My vet wouldn't confirm this, just said grass is good for their gut. But he was pooping neon green and it was watery and his belly hurt as he hated grooming and would be an ass during that time. I added a grazing muzzle for those months and the boarding barn really didn't like it. But I didn't want 4 figures in more ulcers.
