    @5:35: I am not asian, but I know all about that ethnic pause, being the only one of my family with a so-called ethnic name. We moved a lot when I was a kid, so whenever a new teacher would get to around where my name was on the roll call, I would get that same pause. After a couple of moves, I got smart and just volunteered the pronunciation before the teacher even attempted.

    I am Mexican American but my last name is uncommon and rare, it's only in my family and extended family and when the teachers got to it they would ALWAYS pronounced wrong. But I do understand. I never happens with common hispanic last names.

  • @johnpatrick1647

    @johnpatrick1647

    @@edithdlp8045 That's a common mistake regardless of the ethnicity of either the teacher or student. I've seen white people butcher other white peoples' names and I've seen non-white people butcher white peoples' names. I've seen white people butcher non-white peoples' names. And I've seen non-white people butcher other non-white peoples'names. Some names are just harder than others. And it usually comes down to letters being used in a position that they're normally not in in the speakers language. I find the OP's suggestion of offering the correct pronunciation up front or gently correcting them if they do mispronounce it is usually the best solution.

    I've heard many similar versions of those pronunciating-exotic-name jokes so many times in Dry Bar Comedy channel. But this is the first time I heard it so condescending. 😅 Jo Koy's mom rocks, BTW.

    His name and my name would go perfect together. My last name is Blowe and the E is silent so yes it is pronounced blow. Now adding his name oh, we could do a comedy duo called Blowe-Wang LOL we might not even have to say anything just stand there and smile and wave LOL

    I went to an asian national schools, so it was multicultural. Teachers in my schools would asked their students to introduce themself on first meeting. either that or some of them just avoid saying their students name the whole year haha

    Just want to share on korean history of eating dogs. Records of it dates back to the dynasty days in the 600s b.c. In korea, there are special days during summer where we eat good nutritious food to rejuvinate the body and ward off bad energy, particularly an epidemic, as it gets hot and moist, a good breeding ground for disease. Dog meat was chosen based on the five element principles (water, wood, gold, earth, fire) to be most suitable for the occasion, and also mentions of consuming it to ward off parasites . And records indicate it was more of an expensive delicacy. (Now, koreans usually eat chicken on these days, among other things). You did still occasionally find dog meat restaurants in korea, but a while back, it was officially banned.

    For the ignorant, as long as you look Asian regardless of which country, they automatically think you eat dogs and cats.

    I relate to the ethnic pause when people confront my name. Because my name is Sara. I'm Mexican. In spanish, the letter 'r' sorta sounds like a 'd' unless there's two in a row then it sounds like a broken racecar. So when people READ my name versus HEARING it, they get confused. Just the other day someone spelt my name 'sauda' then someone else asked "who is Sarah?" when they saw my name written down. The real kicker is my last name. Elenes. 'El-lay-nays' is a common occurrence.

    I have a male chinese friend, and we often compared the names we were called when doing the roll call, hi name is comparable to Xylo Han (I know his name but for privacy purposes, I'm tweaking it a bit) and once, he told me that a teacher called him "Suzann" once. How in the name of the holy Bob does Xylo Han sound like "Suzann"? The funniest part is that my real name that I'm incapable of tweaking sounds a lot more like Suzann than the one of my friend.

    My Aunt got confused for Tiger Wood's mom at a comedy club once. We couldn't work the mental gymnastics to get to that conclusion since; A) She wasn't that old at the time. B) We found out that she looks nothing liker her, other than they're both Asian.
