Elimination Lab 101: An exploration of Incontinence and Dementia - Part 8 of 8
In this final episode, Teepa shares her experience of wearing of an incontinence brief. She discusses how others might feel when they make the transistion into disposable undergarments and the differences between this new normal and how we’ve always managed our own waste elimination.

This is a bit off topic but still related to elimination. With my mom’s dementia, she can tell people that she needs to pee, but she’s lost ability to stand independently or move her lower limbs much at all, to get to the toilet. It’s been a heartbreaking situation to watch. Her main dementia risk factor was being overweight/obesity (mild sleep apnea, hypertension, cholesterol, inflammation, etc). My grandmother and great uncle also had it. She was 200-220 lbs most of her life. some health conditions can add up in their ‘wear & tear’ over the decades.Trying not to fall in the same multigenerational dementia hole. I’m going for bariatric surgery soon. I’m in Canada and we’re very fortunate to have it covered by the healthcare system.

Very informative!!! Thank=you! I find it difficult to hold my urn when in pain ( a knee, thank God for walk=in showers.) From listening to you talk about the spinal arc in your lower back, I wonder if pain signaling through my spine may over-ride the nerve in my spinal arc. You video is interesting.

@Texasgilley, changes related to things you have to do out in public can be hard, but once you get past worrying about what others think... Life is better again!! Keep the positive vibe going!

I read a tip to use 2 pull ups when going out in public. This way if it needs changing I can take the inner one off by ripping the sides( easily) and so the outer dry one is already on without having to pull the pants off.

My husband living with dementia fell out of bed in his sleep back in 2019. After being hospitalized with a cracked vertebrae, he came back urinary incontinent at night. In 2020, he was hospitalized with pneumonia & despite my best efforts, they trained him to wet himself all the time. Then he contracted Covid from a nurse and is now unable to walk. He cannot tell his caregivers that he needs to use the restroom. They do change him many times per day, but the private pay expense of the briefs and wipes is crushing. This whole thing is just a nightmare.

My 94 year old mother has stage 5 Alzheimers and has lived on her own for the past 32 years. She has carers twice a day 6 days a week. Mother has been assessed and identifies as being incontinent but she absolutely refugees to accept her condition. Mother will not be advised by her carers to wear appropriate underwear and maintains that there is nothing wrong with her. She has been on a 2 week trial and has been approved for free deliveries of 16 weeks worth of incontinence underwear. This is due to the evidence of mother’s compliance with her carers encouragement. I am sure that mother be ecstatic to receive her delivery next week.

Why didn't you lift the lid of the toilet and sit as you would have normally, just with the disposables on? Logical minds what to know!

She said she wanted to find out how it worked while sitting in a chair, as most incontinent people would be doing.
