What it's like to be a transgender dad | LB Hannahs

LB Hannahs candidly shares the experience of parenting as a genderqueer individual -- and what it can teach us about authenticity and advocacy. "Authenticity doesn't mean 'comfortable.' It means managing and negotiating the discomfort of everyday life," Hannahs says.

Great talk! I'm a cis-gendered parent but I completely relate to much of this: picking the authentic route over the easier one; trying to model the attitudes I want to pass onto my children; confronting some of my own issues in order to be the parent I want to be. It must be especially tough when your family unit looks different on the outside from other people's expectations. Thanks for sharing.

Exactly right. And a society would never have been built and will cease to function when we stop agreeing on simple truths like man and woman. Language would have never formed if we were able to “label” and agree with what made a man and woman different. Imagine early man trying to develop language and their had to be an infinite number of identifiers for gender alone. It would have never worked out. These liberals would still be living in caves trying to figure out what to call their pee pees.

I would really like to know whats it like feeling like that, not like the gender your born with but instead with some sort of limbo between them, I know alot of people feel like people like LB Hannahs just want to be special or maybe are psychologically ill and for a long time I thought so aswell since my only reference to people like that was with crazy acting people, being outraged, expecting everything from others to make THEM feel comfortable, basically setting up hurdles and forcing other to jump over them, but seeing someone that seems to be a rationally thinking human makes me consider that not all of those gender neutral or gender fluid people etc. are insane in some way or another ...

I know it's been 2 years since your comment, but let me tell you: * you do not want to feel like that - if you're lucky you have a supporting family, friends, workplace, access to health care and eventually medical treatment to become who you need to be to feel "right" ... but a lot of trans people are not that lucky, they have to fear to be rejected by their family and friends when they come out as transgender, some may lose their job or home over it, health care in some countries is expensive and in some cultures being transgender puts your life at risk * ~ Transman, 35 from Germany.

Contrary to most of the trans-related stuff that I see here, I thought this one was actually kind of eye opening to the experience. Though I wasn't agreeing with Hannahs at all times, it was refreshing to hear from someone that wasn't shoveling pronouns and the like down the audiences' throats. It seemed like Hannahs was simply giving us a glimpse into the many options that trans people face; I was glad to see that Hannahs wasn't really offended at people's reactions to the whole "daddy" thing, just uncomfortable. Again, though I don't agree with everything Hannahs says, it was good to hear from a side that I don't necessarily hear from; when I do, it's usually to push an agenda or force others to comply with their way of life. This was a nice change from that. I don't consider myself informed enough about this issue to begin with, so although I lean to one side as of now, I'm glad to hear from another side. We never stop learning.

Don't guard yourself from learning new things and experiencing new ideas. I'm not going to go around and say that your opinion is wrong or anything, but be respectful. If you don't appreciate the stuff she/he is talking about, at least explain your opinion in a respectful manner. Making a comment saying that "This woman needs to be in a mental institution." is hurtful and very disrespectful. Yes, I can understand that maybe you don't agree with the speech, but it is unacceptable to be rude about it. If you agree or disagree with this ted talk, just be respectful to this family and what they think is right.

If you feel physically unsafe due to words. It's Your Own Problem. But also you can ask to be called one thing or another, and polite people will do it your way, and I guess thats good for you, but you have to know that inpolite people have a right to be inpolite, which is basically part of the right that is, that they can say whatever they want, also you have to know, that what actually matter is what the sender of the message ment (obviously in 99% of the cases is good intention in a message) how you feel is on you, if the sender intentions were good, inocent and bona fide.

6:44 well versed in bias. Sexism is not just against women. Giving a color a meaning is also not constructive, your child doesn't care or assign meaning to colors like we do. That is all for yourself, pink wont feminize your child and blue wont masculinize your child either. Same thing with the words you use. Just be honest with it, they already know what they feel inside and only need acceptance.

the only issue i have with this is that it comes off as if they're forcing their child to be gender neutral. i don't think forcing the child is a great option, as it's really the child's decision. personally, what i would do is dress the baby in gender neutral colors, give them both toys that interest young boys and toys that interest young girls, give them a gender neutral name (i think Forrest is a good one, as it's from my favorite movie, Forrest Gump), let them watch action and princess cartoons, and buy them both female and male clothing as they get older. this way, they won't feel forced to be either or, and will grow up in an enviornment where they're allowed to play with any toy, wear anything they like and they can come to a conclusion on what they like best WITHOUT forcing it onto them. this is a good way to ease your child into gender roles and let them pick what they wanna be. other than that one issue, this was a great talk :)

Some really interesting hot takes in this one. Loved listening to it. Great point that the absence of femininity is masculinity, not gender neutrality. Not sure how I feel about the point that you aren't medically transitioning in part because you don't want your child to be ashamed of her body, but I'll wrestle with that one more. Great talk :)

I don't understand why Hannah did not simply create their own mum/dad title, like doodoo / mala or mapa / dama sort of half mum half dad. It's just noises that are associated with the person. If you do not identify as either role and you're gender fluid or neutral then give yourself a title instead of trying to conform to a already well established gendered role. It makes no sense. Would it not be much easier for the new people to accept a 'new' identity term rather than expect them to make a counter intuitive leap that you are a 'dad' when clearly you do not fit the normalised dad identity? The world is not going to change deeply embedded gendered identities to fit an extremely small minorities reservations about genders. If you want to be taken seriously then come up with a third gender identity that can be used to identify those who do not fit into either gender roles and then promote that. I have nothing against Hannah and s/he/it is free to identify as s/he/it wants. Maybe in time society will accept a middle ground but this uphill battle to redefine men and woman is a fools errand.

You don't get the difference between education and disagreement. It is very small minority and very present on the media. It is hard not to be "educated" about this issue. You believe, just because people still don't get along with your delusion, they are not "educated" enough and you must repeat yourself, when in fact they just disagree.

Albert Bundy That's because the people who think like you are basically going against the scientific consensus. It just stands to reason that they don't know all that much about the topic, aside from surface level details. Obviously, it's fine if you disagree. But when your opinion goes gainst the entirety of the scientic community, then maybe, just maybe, you're wrong. And yeah, I know that even science can be wrong, but I'm more willing to trust what the WHO ( www.who.int/genomics/gender/en/index1.html ) has to say about this than you or some other rando on the internet does.

MTL12561 Your mistake is that you think by linking an article, you automatically win an argument, regardless of the source or content of that article. Congratulations, you found an opinion piece from a leftist organization that supports your side. And if you took the time to read the contents, it really doesn't help your side. Chromosomal mutations are completely irrelevant when it comes to this topic. We are talking about a biological male (XY) identifying himself as female (XX), I don't see how rare mutations are relevant in any way. Interesting how the article mentions abnormal cultures in human history that have allowed for more than just two genders, but it completely ignores the fact that every other human society in existence has recognized the simple biological fact of the clear difference between male and female.

I always though that outdated, closed minded people towards this issue was majority only in undeveloped contries, like here in Brazil, where desinformation and ignorance take their places. Now I can see that it is spread all over. I partially blame religion for that. Years ago, we burned women, for thinking they were witches or something, now we can, analogously, draw the same rationale for this transgender thematic. Transgenders has always been part of our society and we must face it, and discuss it whether you want this or not. The idea that it'd be harmfull for kids development is absurd, if that were really thue, kids of heterossexuals should not have pshycological problems. By the way, what really comforts me is that we are finally approaching this discussion; and hopefully, the more close to science you get, the more compreensive you'll become, since you'll realize it is extremelly common to fell misplaced and have the right to fight for a comfortable status in our society. We are always evolving, and so must society. Perhaps, hundreads of years from now, we can forgive religious people, as we did for catholics who sentenced Galileu for stating that the Earth wasn't the center of the universe. For those who are not religious, I strongly encourage them to open their minds for the inevitable course that human kind is taking.

So thank you for always choosing to be yourself. Thank you for taking the time to consider your relationship to your own body and your own life experiences. Thank you for contemplating how the world has shaped you. And this kind of subject is of interest because of how it may help families that will involve transgender people. The comment section is way too quick on rejecting things that have this kind of subject in the title and aggressive in how it expresses it. This video was reasonable.

You'd think that after all the trans talks and attention their community has gotten in the media that I would have a better understanding of why trans people choose to be trans or that I would generally have a better understanding of their issues, but I don't really, if anything these talks just leave me more confused. The only common thing I sense from trans people is insecurity and internal struggle. Often times it feels like their obsession with gender is actually masking some bigger issue they haven't fully comprehended or figured out yet. Being "mispronouned" or whatever actually isn't that big of a deal, what's a big deal is that you being mispronouned trigger uncomfortable emotions about your ongoing unresolved insecurities about who you are and your ongoing struggles with identity. I have compassion for their struggles and wish them peace of mind, but honestly, at this point it's just not that interesting anymore.

Johnny B Trans people don't choose to be trans, they just are. What they have to decide is if and how far they want to physically transition. And if people would keep telling you that you are something/someone you know you're not, if they constantly invalidate your feelings, you'd become "insecure and troubeled", too. And trans people definitly aren't more obsessed with gender than cis people: Whole partys to reveal a babys gender, strangers asking pregnant women what it will be, certain toys for girls, different ones for boys, the same fucking product in a masculine/blue/boy and a feminine/pink/girl version, most jewellery and clothes have to be divided in man and woman,... And it's cool that (if you're a guy) you would't mind being (constantly) referd to as Ms, woman, lady, girl and with she/her pronouns, maybe even using a wrong name for you like Joanna, or the nickname Jojo you can't stand. But others don't have to put up with it. It's nice that you have compassion for them, even though you "don't get it". But I hope you actually respect them as a person, too. Like, NOT using the wrong pronouns, or asking them about their genitals. And trans people don't have to be interesting to make that effort.

You're out of date, Regina. "Born this way" is no longer the chorus of the gender queer. "It's my choice" is now the new mantra. They get to choose whatever gender they feel like that day and you are obligated to entertain their feelings or get criminal charges against you for hate speech. Welcome to the new normal.

I feel the exact same thing! I think transgender ppl should be psychologically accompanied. They base their personality and individuality on very 'basic' things. I understand much better the queer ppl who do not identify themselves with any gender and are androginous. It is a much stronger deeper political message.

I felt there were some things here that were different from the norm - such as acknowledgement that to make a child gender neutral ultimately removes all of the feminine aspects, very true. I can't help but wonder, what if EVERYone approached parenting with this gender neutrality perspective - there would be no more femininity or masculinity, which is a heartbreaking thought. I have a daughter who loves all things feminine, a son who loves all things masculine, and another daughter who landed in between, naturally. I love their differences. When does it stop, and why are people trying so hard to be neutral and not just raise their child traditionally and then let the child figure out later on whether or not that works for them? I felt confused on behalf of this woman (who wants to be addressed as a man) the entire talk - she is confused on who she is, she doesn't feel comfortable in her own skin, even with embracing a masculine appearance, she is confused on how to raise her daughter, the world doesn't know how to address them correctly because of their choices. So much confusion. When can we start celebrating the differences between men and women instead of trying to mesh them together and pretend its all made up? Is this family making things harder for themselves by trying too hard to be anti-culture? Will they be disappointed if their daughter is feminine by nature and stays that way? I appreciate the perspective shared, though.

chris pyott If you are interested, I can tell you about my experience. My dad (formerly my mom) is trans and transitioned to male. Nothing has changed, since he transitioned really, except for his self-confidence that went way up and him actually loving himself instead of self-hatred. To me or my siblings nothing has changed either, except for the way we call him. We all found different ways, but for me it was never an option to call him "Papa" (I'm from Germany), because my dad will always be my "Papa" and I couldn't take that away from him. So I decided to call him "Dad" (The English word) instead. And when people that know me ask me who he is, I always felt weird, because saying "It's my mom" would make him feel awkward and saying "It's my dad" might result in me having to explain him being transgender to them if they know my father. So I flip it instead and just say "I'm the son" But besides that, nothing is any different, except for my dad being happy and confident with himself I hope that was somewhat helpful to you (Obligatory "Sorry for my potentially bad English)
