What it's like living with roommates! When I bought my house I knew that I would want to have roommates. It's great financially, but more than that I just wasn't ready to live alone. But owning the home and having tenants definitely takes a little adjusting!

I wouldn’t necessarily want a roommate living with my husband, two cats and me, but I wouldn’t mind buying something like a duplex and having someone live on the other side. Although having a single house you rent rooms to seems much less expensive and less fussy. I’m glad it works for you! I’d love to hear more about house hacking! Great video.

What I’ve always loved about your content is how organic it is. You make videos based on what your subscribers ask/ what you are interested in. THEN you incorporate your sponsors within the content you’re making. I feel like most ‘influcencers/content creators’ create videos just for sponsors these days. Bravo Monica ❤️

I was a landlord-roommate for 3 years. When the landlord lives with you, renter knows broken things will get fixed asap. Also if the renters like you, they are less likely to damage the house.

I agreed to live with a girl via email I found on Craigslist back in 2014 because I was under the wire in finding a roommate. Needless to say, she was a recovering heroin addict, stiffed me with the rent and bills twice, never cleaned up after herself, forgot to flush, and was generally disrespectful. I’d rather live off Ramen than have roommates again.

I do recommend living alone at least once bc, if you meet someone & marry, you'll (hopefully) live together forever. Condsider total independence by living alone while still having an active social life. Then, coming home is a luxury. You're working & making vids, so having your own home would be relaxing. At your age 25 yrs ago, I had my "sweet pad" bc it had a loft for a bedroom, w/a spiral staircase. Apts were affordable back then:). I'd come home, fling off my bra, change into jammies, & watch tv w/my cats in peace. It was wonderful! I'd do chores once a week, go shopping 1-2x/wk, I'd hang out w/friends - was busy! You might enjoy it, + doing it now while you're young!

I bought a 4 bedroom house 5 years ago, been renting out the extra rooms ever since. It was a great financial decision. Having an unoccupied room costs me $600+ a month. I did recently keep one of the rooms for myself to have more space, but the opportunity cost is so tangible.

Loved the video. I never considered being a landlord and having roommates, but it makes total sense. Also, I understand that you felt uneasy with the one girl. If someone lies to me, I cannot unsee it and everything that this person does could potentially annoy me, where it would not in others if that makes sense. Therefore I don't think you are a bad landlord or so.

Definitely an interesting perspective to hear, as I think in this situation I would end up being a bit of a control freak about looking after what belongs to me. I've rented with others, but can't imagine being the landlord too. As a student I had a flatmate who was nice, funny and the same age, but definitely a "date night in the living room" type, or taking over the dinner table when I was trying to eat there. She'd host parties without the other 3 of us agreeing, and got us into a sticky situation by agreeing to rent another year with us and then pulling out. Then our new flatmate we pulled out of a student housing fb group, she moved in having met only one of my other flatmates. Never found out her age, but think she was about 5-10 years older than us and turned out to be the perfect flatmate. Turned out that from a previous experience she had vowed never to live with a 19yr olds again, only to move in with 19yr old me and my two 20yr old flatmates - but we turned out to be much more suitable roommates. From this I would say I couldn't judge off age but totally agree that anyone lying about it isn't right - just gotta be respectful to each other and with having people over and taking care of communal areas!

As someone who has rented a fair amount, I’d say Monica is on the more lenient side for being a landlord. Setting baseline boundaries so ALL the occupants can live unanimously and in harmony is NOT too tough. Too much freedom creates unfair dynamics, resentment and messy situations long term.

I feel the same way about being alone BUT I only feel that way with people that I am comfortable with or that are my family. When my family goes on a trip, it is TOO quiet or empty. Although I see that it is financially beneficial to rent a room to someone, I don't think I could share that space with someone because I would be afraid that I am in their way. I am also too introverted for that...unless it's family or friends that I wouldn't mind living with. Kudos to your for that bravery and trusting your gut! Also, I would not trust that girl either. She lied so easily about something...who knows what else she lied about.

I'm only half way through the video, but....I do the exact same thing you do, but there are ALL kinds of rules, mostly adding them because someone did them. Don't put flammable things in the dryer. Don't have a different guy from Tinder that you JUST met over every night; they don't need to know where I live. I've only had a couple good people rent out my rooms. Because of that, it is very awkward having to "get on to them" because I live with them. No, your boyfriend cannot stay the night every night rent free and without paying utilities, and come do his laundry for free. Yes, you have to clean your PRIVATE bathroom and no, I don't believe you that you cleaned it when I literally had to pour half a container of bleach in the toilet in it and let it soak over night to get it clean. I do have a fee for paying late. It's very awkward asking for rent and a late fee. Otherwise, I agree that it isn't weird that they pay me their rent. Sorry if I comment again after I keep watching.

Hey Monica, I'm the exact same way with smells. I have lotions and candles that take me back to being a kid. It's so weird! I've heard it's because the part of the brain that processes smells is right next to the part of the brain that processes memories.

MeetKevin made a good suggestion for being the landlord when you live in the place; He said you mention that you are going to talk to the owner when they have questions and keep it to yourself. I really think it's a good way to keep tension down. Then you can be as brutal with lease terms and whatnot. It will help you if there are issues with tenants. Just say you are the "house manager" hahahaa.

I'm sorry Monica but you really give the impression of being a very difficult landlord. Are people paying for a room or for a share of the house? If it's the latter they are entitled to use the shared space and have some personal belongings there too. You really give the impression that it's your house and they only have access to their rooms. If that girl paid rent in time and was clean I don't think she did anything wrong.

Hey here is the thing, it's my house- my rules. (sounds harsh and I cringe saying that!!!) My one rule that I am pretty particular about is not wanting to personal decors in the common spaces. I am sorry you feel that makes me a tough landlord, but I disagree! I enjoy when my roommates have friends over! That is totally fine with me, but there has to be some balance.

If Monica had her own personal photos/memorabilia in the common space, that would be unfair, but judging by a few videos, she does not, so it’s not like her roommates live in her shrine

My goodness you seem like way too tough of a landlord. I would not want to pay Seattle rates and live in a place I’m confined to a room. Living rooms and kitchens should be shared spaces. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her wanting to have date night in the living room or making food in the kitchen. If you’re paying to live in a house you should full access to the house not just a bedroom. I say this as a 25 year old woman that’s rented several places, both in apartments and town houses where the landlord lived with us.

Nah I would love to live with a landlord that doesn’t tolerate the other tenants not respecting shared spaces. If you’re constantly in a shared space, especially with a GUEST, it’s unfair to the roommates. Her boyfriend wasn’t paying rent and was occupying the space more than the people that lived there

I’m not a Monica defender at all, but she’s being reasonable. You can’t have date night ALL THE TIME in the living room! It is a shared space and no one should feel uncomfortable to use the space. We only have Monica’s POV but the roommate clearly had access to shared living spaces but she was basically making it her own at night. The picture frame thing tbh I wouldn’t care too much but it is weird since it is a shared space.

  • @MonicaChurch

I am sorry this is totally misinterpreted! I enjoy my roommates have friends over and hanging out in the common spaces, they are definitley not confined to their rooms haha. The girl that did the date night just did it very often and just really took over the whole space (which she should be kind of mindful other people also live here), to the point Bea is saying, it felt uncomfortable for everyone else.. my other roommate complained about it to me as well- so I know it's not all in my head.
