A team player is a myth. You can not get everyone in the team to share the same viewpoint to reach the goal. In the workplace a team could consist of various people who have different viewpoints of interest in the project or subject you are working together on from a high interest in reaching the goal to not caring at all but going through the motions. I speak from personal experience. I can see that a team of NASCAR pit crew would work as a good team for a very specific goal in a short period of time, however in the broad sense it just doesn't work. I believe in individuality.

It depends on the size of the group

I was just let go for not being a team player, apparently multiple people said this about me - but I always WANTED to work with people, and was the kind of person that joked all the time an smiled a lot so I ha hope people would know they could talk to me about anything... but I had a feeling I had a jealous enemy there but maybe it was me because multiple people said this. I don't know what that means so that's why I'm trying to learn from it.. Maybe I just never learned. Delegate responsibilities...I did that?? I thought it went without saying that if someone needed my collaboration they would ask me. When I tried to work wi th others, maybe it came off as trying to take over. I just don't quite get it yet but I'll keep learning about what it means.

@@flyingpotatoe1299 The size of the group makes no difference. I worked with teams of 3 to 10 or more. On an individual level I achieved far more then ever working with a team.

@@BIBLE-a-s-m-r This makes no sense. Why would you get fired for not being a "team player" as long as you performed your job requirements. I always despised management because in my opinion anyone who was promoted into management advanced themselves to do less. "Delegate Responsibility" doesn't mean that the leader of the team does nothing and that is what happens with poor leadership too often. From my experience I knew more about what was going on with my job then the supervisor did and could perform the job better then he/she. People are easily intimidated and feel threatened when you PROVE to excel in your abilities. In my experience my fellow co-workers and management would jump all over me if I did a slight mistake and were always there to criticize, however when I achieved things that some said was impossible to do the best I always got from a form of approval or compliment was SILENCE. The "team player" idea is a coup out from lazy worthless management that are failures in leadership when it requires them to address individual performance and will just punish the team as a whole.
Yeet
It means being a bully.
