What It Is Like to Ride In the Presidential Limo
Ойын-сауық
The Presidential Limousine, known officially as "Cadillac One" and called "the Beast" by the Secret Service, is a remarkable machine. The president's car is capable of transporting and protecting him, letting him work undisturbed, and if necessary, unleashing nuclear hell. President Obama's car is a unique vehicle built around a Cadillac DTS that almost everyone has seen, but almost nobody knows anything about. And that's on purpose - the details of its protection and weapons are closely guarded secrets.

I used to fly the Presidential motorcade and Secret Service every now and then. I’ve also known a couple of guys who went onto the 89th AS to fly the VC-25 (Air Force One). There are quite a few security features about the presidential motorcade itself that aren’t public knowledge.

This was prolly before your time, but, I was at Andrews AFB for the first couple of the Carter years. It was the time of the "controlled OER" insanity and over half of the squadron's officers opted out. @@Ronin4614 very cool! Sorry I missed your comment. That’s awesome that you were there at Andrews! Was that one of those times when they were trying to “force downsize”? They did that with pilots back in the late 2000’s and they’ve been paying a stiff price for it ever since. I spent a month at Andrews AFB managing the “Phoenix Banner Stage” for President Clinton’s trip to the Far East back in 2000 back when I was a young 1LT! I had a great time that month. At Rancho Del Cielo the Beast saw little use after the first trip down the two lane mountain road. Not only the Beast, but most vehicles had burned down their breaks so much that they decided to abandon ground transport an go with air transport instead. I was detailed there from a nearby USAF base to facilitate air travel to local areas.
Fun fact: The Beast is much more closely related to a pickup truck than a Cadillac DTS/CT6. Needs the beefier chassis to support all the armor; it's just styled to look like the existing sedan.

We had a couple of the armored GSA Suburbans in Iraq on JBB, too. Heavyweight monsters with an 8.1 liter engine, and felt like driving a battleship. Had to scavenge them from the scrap yard and our Battalion Maintenance section had to get them functional again with some serious jury rigging (like retro-machining the hubs for Uparmored M1114 Rims) but they served as on-post transport well enough. Not quite as protected as an armored Hummer, but close. The Beast here seems to be about on par with an MRAP. From the run flats to air filtration and chassis/window armor, pretty close.

It still amazes me people voted for people like Trump and Biden. Most people I know over the age of 70 can barely be trusted to live alone and I've known tons of people to work a full time job or run a company after the age of 70 but that's usually because they rely heavily on someone who does most of the day to day operations for them and heavily supports them and they're not usually making any major decisions on their own.

When viewing the Kennedy Lincoln, looking at the top of the rolled down rear passenger window, one can count all of the panes of glass which make up the window. The window itself is made up of perhaps 4 to 5 pieces of glass, and it appears to be about an inch, to an inch and a half in thickness. I’ve read elsewhere if any of these limousines need to be moved from where they’re on display, the secret service must come, unlock them, and actually move the car. Nobody else is allowed to drive them.
