In the beginning, I basically had to run extremely slow, almost slower than walk pace... But fear not, things gradually got better. I recommend it.

I'm struggling to stay in zone 2 with a run. I have to walk or else I go into zome 3. Does it take a while and do you have any specific tips? I get frustrates because I want to run slow in zone 2 but cant maintain zone 2 even with the slowest run possible.

@@GHOSTSrunningI've had a similar problem, my heart rate is immediately at 150-160 when running even at a pretty slow pace, at least if my watch is measuring correctly. From doing some research, it seems like that's just normal for some people, and it's more important to focus on whether or not you're able to hold a conversation comfortably at the speed you're going at

If needed yes do a brisk walk. As you get fitter zone 2 upgrades to a jog after sometime. It's similar to cycling, my zone 2 initially was super slow. Nowadays my zone 2 rides are pretty fast due to increased ftp.

Does any KZreadrs actually explain WHY zone 2 is the best range to run in? It’s supposedly based off lactate acid (2mmols) so why 2. Why not 2.5, why not 1.5. What is it that is specifically happening at this lactate threshold that is not happening at the others?

From what i heard: at the 2mmol maximum fat is used as a fuel source. And you train this intensity to improve the capabilit of this system and mithocondria. CMIMW. Ingo san millan and peter attia is one come to mind for this topics

@@Haikan.It's also because it's low impact on the body and can be done in large volume without risking injury or overtraining. Most athletes should do most work on zone 2 while adding some high intensity intervals in between days per week.

You can improve your efficiency in zone 2 even when you're getting older. For Zone 4-5 where it's about Vo2max, you will struggle as you get older and it's glycogen based. On fat you can basically run forever without refueling. You will not hit a wall in a run where your fuel storage is depleted at some point. You will not run out of fat.

Absolutely, my zone 2 is at like a 12:30 mile pace currently, and that’s at the top end. I typically run a mile in around 8:30-9:00 depending on the day and whether or not I’ve done weights. It’s very frustrating to stay in zone 2 for jogs so most of the time I just ramp up the incline and walk at a brisk pace.

Question. I started running 4 years ago. My max heart rate was 190, over the years I’ve struggled to get to that number, my Garmin is consistently in maintaining or recovering. Even after weeks of hard track sessions showing a max HR of 177. I’ve lost 3 stone in weight, got stronger and faster, but was told I’m not pushing hard enough on those hard sessions to get to 190 HR. What am I doing wrong?

  • @JeatBunkie

You need to set your heart rate zones accurately in the connect app. If the watch thinks your max hr is higher than it actually is, it will assume you’re taking it very easy all the time. Do a hard 5k with an all out sprint finish, get the max hr from that data (unless you have a more accurate method) and set it in the app in hr zones

There could be a number of reasons for this but the most likely is your pace is too fast. Other reasons heart rate is difficult to maintain is due to hydration, heat, quality and quantity of sleep, quality of heart rate measuring device (chest strap will always be better than a watch), your route could be hilly, these are only a few. Your heart rate can be variable for an infinite number of reasons. However, most people are surprised how slow zone 2 is… many people find it frustrating and give up. Your current heart rate is about where I’d expect zone 3 - zone 4. You’re not alone, most people run in these zones because of the comfortably uncomfortable feeling. It’s tough but I can do it. This is a no pain no gain mindset. Unfortunately, this mindset is not as efficient as zone 2 and can put you at greater risk for injury if you always run in this zone. Needless to say it is way better than not exercising so don’t beat yourself up about it. Good luck and keep on exercising. 👍

What I do is I stop and start again. I'll jog gently for 1 minute or less than that, and walk for 2 minutes before starting all over again. And slowly, I'll increase the jog from 1 to 2 minutes, but make sure it's in zone 2 . I increase my minutes very slowly . So when I fully rested and go for a full on run, I feel great because I felt like I built up endurance.
