    As an English speaker, thank you for showing me how hard it must be to learn English as a second or foreign language. There are a lot of rules and exceptions to rules. Young Americans have started making up their own words. Incorrect words, such as conversate. Instead of converse. Drives me nuts!

    So i just saw this test roaming around on youtube so I decided to give it a spin! My overall score is around 37/45 on my best estimate with scores of 14/15 on A1-A2, 13/15 on B1-B2 and 10 on C1. Overall, i feel pretty satisfied with my results as I have been through a lot of insecurities over the past months or so about my english level of I was even bilingual in the first place, hopefully, this can make me feel a bit better about my english level and cheers to those who are struggling or are insecure about their english level as even if your english sucks, you have to know that it doesn't matter if you can't get some things right. As long as you can clearly express youe ideas, you are bilingual. SIGAMOS ADELANTE!!!!

    This "test" contains multiple errors. One such error is as follows: "Alex was so tired. She could scarcely keep his eyes open." Other errors are not as obvious. As an editor and ESL teacher, I feel frustrated for those investing their time in an effort to learn a new language, only to be confused by training modules that contain misinformation. Grammarly instantly comes to mind when considering an app that frequently gets it wrong.

  • @lingportal

    @lingportal

    Dear Paul Walker, thank you! The phrase "errors are not as obvious" makes me smile. 😀 Students are writing the same: 'watch or see" - dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/look-at-see-or-watch "arrive to or arrive at" - www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/arrive-at-vs-arrive-to-usage "will eat" - This isn’t a hypothetical scenario, Such forms which are sometimes called the real conditional can be found in detective stories, for example: “If the robber left by the window, there will be footprints in the flowerbed”, said Sherlock Holmes. Please, specify your list of "not as obvious errors" And, finally, Alex - yes, sorry for a minor slip! Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. Bruce Lee 😀

  • @lingportal

    5 ай бұрын

    'Arrive to' or 'Arrive at' So then, to summarize where we have, ahem, arrived as of this point in our exploration: 'arrive to' was common enough to be criticized from the late 18th century, rare enough to be identified as obsolete in the late 20th century, and common enough again in the second decade of the 21st century to be noted by lexicographers (such as yours truly) again. It all makes us very curious about these words. Given all this, we can only arrive to the conclusion that English is always full of surprises. (We can still of course arrive at that conclusion as well.) www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/arrive-at-vs-arrive-to-usage May you find joy in discovering the richness of English literature, from classic novels to contemporary poetry.

    @kronksstronkstonks6360

    3 ай бұрын

    @@lingportalIt should be "the airport" regardless of whether it is "to" or "at," no? You will never hear anyone ever say they are going to airport, they would say they are going to the airport. That can easily cause people to disregard the sentence as a red herring answer with a deliberate error to catch out inattentive reading and instead select the third sentence, which isn't ideal but at least sounds more complete than "to airport." A couple of other frustrations I had with this test was the sand question, which was just a picture and "countable" or "uncountable". The lack of context of whats actually being asked can cause confusion. That might just be a me thing, though. It just seemed out of left field to go from written questions to a picture only one. Especially since it only happened once and without instruction. B1-B2 question 13 is frustrating because both sentences "The workers have been trying to move the piano into the flat for an hour" and "The workers tried to move the piano into the flat for an hour" seem acceptable depending on whether you are speaking about the workers in present tense or narrating their actions in past tense, which isn't context that the question gives. "To move" isn't tied strictly to present tense as far as I'm aware, so "tried to move" is a valid answer. The only reason I got that question right is because I took a 50/50 gamble between two valid answers unless there's a super niche clause that prevents "tried to move" from being a valid answer.

  • @lingportal

    @lingportal

    3 ай бұрын

    Dear Paul Walker, Thank you for your comments. It's been a pleasure and quite useful to discuss. Furthermore, students can explore different viewpoints, undoubtedly aiding them in learning English. It's quite apparent that you identified sand in the picture. Anyway, it's just unclear why the combination of 'sand in the picture' and the question 'countable or uncountable' poses difficulties in providing an answer. Perhaps it might be worthwhile to take another look at the dictionary? «Uncountable: materials and substances: water, rice, cement, gold, milk” and sand. dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/nouns-countable-and-uncountable The workers _______ to move the piano into the flat for an hour. tried have trying have been trying Upon reading or hearing this sentence, students grasp its main idea, which revolves around the duration of the action. The present perfect continuous tense is commonly employed to discuss how long an activity has been ongoing. However, in your context, you mention using the past tense, specifically "tried." The past simple tense is typically used to narrate a single event in the past . Suppose the test developer intended 'tried' as the correct answer. In that case, they might have framed the question differently, incorporating time indicators such as 'yesterday' or 'last Sunday' rather than 'for an hour.' These test questions are familiar to students learning English as a foreign language. dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/present-perfect-continuous-i-have-been-working dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/past-simple-i-worked We hope that these explanations will help alleviate your frustrations. My parents are Algerien but I was born in America and I lived eleven years there. Soon after my eleventh birthday my family and I moved to Algeria. I'm twelve now and I randomly found this test and decided to try it out. I want to be an author, so I'm kind of disappointed with the marks I got. On A1 - A2 (Beginner level) I got 14/15. On B1 - B2 (Intermediate) I got 14/15 as well. On C1 - C2 (Advanced English) I got 12/15. So overall, I got 40/45. I'm going to save this video and come back once I turn sixteen. I'll have this comment to compare the notes. I hope I would've improved by then. Thank you for the video though!

    I’m a native English speaker who watched this out of curiosity, and I have some issues with these questions. A1-A2 Level, 13/15 My answer: “If it’s raining today, I am going to stay home.” Their answer: “If it’s raining today, I will stay home.” There’s nothing grammatically wrong with saying “I will stay home,” but it’s more natural-sounding to say, “I’m going to stay home.” You would generally only say “I *will* do X” if someone was worried or disagreeing or something like that, and you were emphasizing that X was your intention. If you’re just conveying your plans to somebody, it sounds less aggressive to say “I’m going to do X.” B1-B2 Level, 11/15 “I used to play football every Saturday when I was at school.” That’s a fine way to say it and it’s the answer I chose, but another of the options - “I played football every Saturday when I was at school.” - is fine too. 13/15 “The workers have been trying to move the piano into the flat for an hour.” That’s fine, but another of the options - “The workers tried to move the piano into the flat for an hour.” - could also be the correct answer; we aren’t given enough context to know. If they’re still trying to move the piano into the apartment, then the correct answer is “have been trying,” and if they tried for an hour and gave up, then the correct answer is “tried.” C1 Level, 2/15 “The plane had taken off before I arrived to airport.” Maybe this is a Britishism I don’t know (I’m American), but where I live at least, “arrived to airport” is wrong, you would say “arrived at the airport” or “got to the airport.” The question is asking for an example of the past perfect/pluperfect, and both the other choices - “Your son had grown since the last time I saw him.” and “The police had stopped them on their way last night.” - also use the past perfect correctly. However, it would take a somewhat unusual context to make the “Your son…” sentence grammatically correct, because the person would have had to have seen the son in the past and be reminiscing that he had grown since the last time they saw him before that (if they’re seeing the son in the present, they’d say, “Your son has grown…”). But in my opinion, all three of those options are potentially correct answers. For the record, I think most native English speakers wouldn’t be able to tell you what the past perfect tense is. 3/15 “It’s chaotic and disorganized country, but on the other hand it’s a very friendly and beautiful place.” I have a feeling this quiz was written by someone who’s a non-native English speaker themselves, because it should be “It’s *a* chaotic and disorganized country…” I think another of the options - “It’s [a] chaotic and disorganized country, but in contrast it’s a very friendly and beautiful place.” is also fine. It’s not quite as natural-sounding, but there’s nothing wrong with saying it that way and it wouldn’t stand out to me in conversation. 7/15 What was up with the S in “she” there? Hope I'm not about to get Amara crawling out of my screen. 🙃 8/15 “He couldn’t have gone to the shopping center. It’s closed on Sundays.” Another option - “He couldn’t go to the shopping center. It’s closed on Sundays.” - could also be the correct answer, we aren’t given enough context to know. If the guy didn’t go to the shopping center and you’re saying “well he couldn’t have gone anyway, it’s closed,” then it’s “couldn’t have gone,” but if you’re telling someone that the guy had had plans to go to the shopping center and ended up not going because it was closed, then it’s “couldn’t go.” 11/15 “If any single Scala production after the war was the paragon of excellence, it was this one.” This is definitely the correct answer given the options, but “paragon of excellence” sounds a bit weird to me. A paragon is already excellent. Someone or something can be a paragon of some particular positive quality, like a “paragon of justice” or a “paragon of artistry.” But when paired with excellence, I think it would sound better to say “the epitome of excellence.” 13/15 “Having said that, I didn’t mean to offend, I just meant to say truth.” “Say truth” isn’t good English. You would say “tell the truth” or “be honest” (or even better, “I just wanted to be honest” or “I’m just trying to be honest”) or if you want to be pretentious about it, “speak the truth” - or maybe even “speak truth,” if you’re being righteous in the face of an authority. But “say truth” is just not right. I’d like to extend my apologies to everyone who has to learn this frickin’ complicated and idiosyncratic language I happen to have been born into.

    Dear SpocksCat! We are very thankful for your thoughtful comments. We are also touched by your kindness and compassion that you express to EFL learners - it is generous. You have provided quite reasonable explanations, and one can agree with them. However, the developers of this test created questions on specific grammatical topics aligned with levels (CEFR). Presumably, those learning English as a foreign language are familiar with grammar rules, as they have been taught them. In addition, it is important to note that in the creation of this video, not only teachers but also designers were involved, which possibly led to minor typos in the test itself. (the example is 3/C1, the article 'a' was lost during the editing..) Here are some clarifications for your comments: This question (13/A1-A2) is about conditional sentences - first conditional, to be precise. According to grammar, the rule states, “We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations we believe are real or possible. In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually: if/when + present simple >> will + infinitive.” Both sentences (11/B1-B2) are grammatically correct, but they convey a slightly different nuance: "I used to play football every Saturday when I was at school." This construction with "used to" implies that the action was a regular habit or routine in the past, but it also suggests that it is no longer the case. It emphasizes the contrast between the past habit and the present situation. "I played football every Saturday when I was at school." This simple past tense construction states a past habitual action without implying anything about the current situation. It describes a routine from the past without addressing whether the speaker still plays football on Saturdays. 13/B1-B2 The sentence "The workers have been trying to move the piano into the flat for an hour" uses the present perfect continuous tense to emphasize the duration and ongoing nature of the action. The workers began their attempts to move the piano in the past, and their efforts have been ongoing up to the present moment. The inclusion of "for an hour" specifies the duration of the ongoing action. It indicates that the workers started trying to move the piano an hour ago and are still in the process. 2/C1 'Arrive to' or 'Arrive at' So then, to summarize where we have, ahem, arrived as of this point in our exploration: 'arrive to' was common enough to be criticized from the late 18th century, rare enough to be identified as obsolete in the late 20th century, and common enough again in the second decade of the 21st century to be noted by lexicographers (such as yours truly) again. It all makes us very curious about these words. Given all this, we can only arrive to the conclusion that English is always full of surprises. (We can still of course arrive at that conclusion as well.) www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/arrive-at-vs-arrive-to-usage The past perfect tense is a verb form that is used to indicate an action completed before a specific point in the past. It is formed by combining "had" with the past participle of the main verb. The structure is: had + past participle. For example, "She had already finished her work when I arrived." In this sentence, the past perfect tense "had finished" indicates that the completion of her work occurred before the arrival (another past action) took place. Today, it should be noted that English has ceased to belong solely to the British or Americans - it is a lingua franca. People learn English for various reasons, including international communication, travel, business opportunities, education, etc. Spoken language and written language are not sharply divided but exist on a continuum. Standard spoken English grammar will therefore be different from standard written English grammar in many respects if we consider ‘standard’ to be a description of the recurrent spoken usage of adult native speakers. What may be considered ‘non-standard’ in writing may well be ‘standard’ in speech. assets.cambridge.org/97805215/88461/excerpt/9780521588461_excerpt2.pdf English is always full of surprises. Concluding this extensive response to your comment, we would like to express hope that through the language, people can successfully achieve their goals and mutual understanding in various aspects of life. Best regards, Lingportal Team 😀

    Dear Priskila Ratnasari, Some questions are tricky! For example: №9 B1-2 We don’t use 'watch' when referring to a film in the cinema. For example: A: We’re going to the cinema tonight. B: What are you going to see? (Not: What are you going to watch?) dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/look-at-see-or-watch In that question, 'You should go'' means go out - go to the cinema. №2 C1 'Arrive to' or 'Arrive at' So then, to summarize where we have, ahem, arrived as of this point in our exploration: 'arrive to' was common enough to be criticized from the late 18th century, rare enough to be identified as obsolete in the late 20th century, and common enough again in the second decade of the 21st century to be noted by lexicographers (such as yours truly) again. It all makes us very curious about these words. Given all this, we can only arrive to the conclusion that English is always full of surprises. (We can still of course arrive at that conclusion as well.) www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/arrive-at-vs-arrive-to-usage №4 C1 : The first part points out that bread wasn’t bought yesterday, in other words, we know that “there is no bread at home”. Having known that we can make the conclusion “we will eat nothing”. This isn’t a hypothetical scenario, Such forms which are sometimes called the real conditional can be found in detective stories, for example: “If the robber left by the window, there will be footprints in the flowerbed”, said Sherlock Holmes. With the real past conditional, you are not constrained by the normal rules of tense-sequencing found in the 1-2-3 conditional templates. English is always full of surprises. "Spoken language and written language are not sharply divided but exist on a continuum. Standard spoken English grammar will therefore be different from standard written English grammar in many respects if we consider ‘standard’ to be a description of the recurrent spoken usage of adult native speakers. A remark: What is the noise? What ....just ...? Among the 3 possibilities, you suggest the following as the only correct answer: What "has" just "happened". But the expression: "What did just happen?” can also be used as an emphatic question.

  • @lingportal

    @lingportal

    9 ай бұрын

    Dear MaziarPersian! Thank you for your remark. In British English, the adverb of frequency "just" is typically not used in the past simple tense. We use the present perfect tense to talk about a finished event or state in the very recent past. We often use ‘just, yet, still and already’ with the present perfect because they are related to the present moment. learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/grammar/b1-b2-grammar/present-perfect-just-yet-still-already#:~:text=Just%20used%20with%20the%20present,you%20ring%20him%20back%2C%20please%3F dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/present-perfect-simple-i-have-worked?q=Present+perfect+simple%3A+uses k.

    А1 - А2 = 15/15 В1 - В2 = 14/15 С1 = 10/15 Overall = 36/45 It's particularly gratifying for me because I didn't study English either at school or in language courses, I don't live in an English-speaking country, and my knowledge of English is based on watching movies and series, initially with subtitles in my language and then with English subtitles. Of course, over many years. I myself didn't know that I could speak English until I found myself in another country where I was forced to do so. Before that, I had no practice in communication at all. So the recipe for those who aren't in a hurry: watch your favorite movies and series in English and enjoy 😉
