WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

That wouldn't be interesting. It is better to have a conversation and to understand the other person. I like hearing evolution being described to a creationist and the creationist responds "I accept that but that is not evolution, that is adaptation." Then, you can ask the creationist what is biological evolution and they can give their personal definition. Then, you can ask what macroevolution is and what microevolution is. Then you can ask them if changes to DNA are possible. etc.

Thanks for your question of what's wrong with prayer. 1. Prayers have been tested by the Templeton Association. It was found the people in hospitals being prayed for had a slightly less chance of surving. Psychologists report that its likely the ones who knew they were being prayed for gave up and believed it must be in their God's hands only. It can be strongly argued that if you want to give people a fighting chance of staying alive in hospitals *don't* make it harder for them by praying. 2. When prayer is used as an action instead of understanding its merely words, then prayer can and will be the wrong course of 'action' instead of actually doing something, like calling for actual help like an ambulance to come. It is well known that many theist parents will pray their sick child gets better, and offer zero medical help instead. It could be classed as one of the highest reasons for chil deaths at home. 3. Prayer has the same rate of chance as working as ill-informed guesses. They are not even informed guesses, as usually the one praying has no idea how to help the situation themselves. A better method than prayer would be an informed guess. What do we do in this situation? We apply bandage, medication, support, or at least call for support who don't need to guess at all. 4. Prayer is used at mass gatherings including political speaches usually regarding catastrophic events. It is also recommended by all churches as the 'first step' in seeking real help. Often we hear that certain pandemics or wars or natural disasters etc. Must have prayer or 'in my prayers' as the goto area. This seems to consistently be a waste of time. Where pandemics or wars, shootings etc. continue anyhow. It would be best to provide support instead, which may include demonstrations in public (marches etc) to get governments to actually DO something! 5. We don't have any sufficient evidence or even a good reason to believe any claimed God is even hearing prayers! To say this more clearly: Believing in a listening (and thus actioning) God is hearing prayers is being unreasonable and without substance. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. But now I'll watch the vid if I missed something ;)

Behe lost his face at the Kitzmiller vs Dover trial when the judge was amused because after he said he had no explanations for the complexity of some bacteria flagellum (a favorite of intelligent design) the lawyer for Kitzmiller deposited a foot tall stack of books and articles that explained exactly all the steps of how it had originated and evolved into the current structure. The republican inclined judge found the Dover school district at fault for introducing Creationism disguised under the Intelligent Design rebranding. Some of the Dover schools district administrators were actually convinced of lying under oath for their part in the acquisition of ID related books

Here's the problem with prayer besides the fact that it CANNOT be proven, or tested. When you say, as you did, that prayer works for you. What that also suggests is that you're special somehow and God answers your prayers but not anyone else's. What about the prayers of children who die everyday because they don't have clean water to drink, or food to eat? Are you suggesting that God has singled you out because you're somehow special? This is clearly textbook narcissism. You. You. You. You're somehow special to this God.

*A Perfect Creator Cannot Exist* 1. If God exists, then He is not the perfect creator of the universe. 2. If a being is perfect, the universe He creates must be perfect. 3. But the universe is imperfect. 4. Hence, it is impossible for God to exist. It is not necessary that the universe conform to human ideas of perfection, only that it conform perfectly to God's creative intent. Conscious acts in time are generally means to ends. Without fully knowing the ends, and the feasible means, we can't judge the efficacy of chosen means. As we have no independent knowledge of God's intent, or of the constraints consistency places on creating a universe, we can't judge how perfectly the universe mirrors God's intent. "Works" isn't just a word you can throw aimlessly, it has meaning and it describes something. If something "works" then by nature, it has a sequence or a pattern, a set of different variables in a specific environment that interact in a specific way to give you a result, and that if reproduced exactly the same way, meaning of you have all of the different variables, the specific environment and the specific method in which they interact then the outcome should be replicated. This is more or less called the scientific method. Even if we don't know or understand this "pattern" or method of how it works, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, just means we don't know it yet. You can't do any of this with prayer. Well, you can't replicate this "working result" that this caller claims. And their answer to that is always about the "real faith" of the person praying and whether it's in "God's plan" or not. So to get a desired outcome, prayer does nothing, it's as effective as tossing a few pennies into a fountain. That being said, the act of "prayer" in itself is not worthless. It does "work", in a sense, psychologically and it's similar to meditation. So it will help you feel better about coping with something or stressing out about something going on. In that case, call it what it is; meditation. Until you can prove (and it really shouldn't be all that difficult to prove) that there is cause and effect between praying and results, then it's worthless for getting measurable results, or results of any kind other than you "feeling" that it works.
