I am struggling with communication because I just can’t find the right words to describe my ideas and because I think so fast I get lost most if not all the time. I have thought verbally for a long time, and it has crossed my mind more than once how limiting it can be, too slow. Trying to reprogram my thinking to side more in the abstract

Long ago in a galaxy far away, I was immersed in the disciplines called conceptual data modelling and functional process modelling. It was visual thinking made precise and manageable and billable. Of course the kids nowadays just write web pages, but that's a kind of visual thinking as well.

Woah, this has been really inspiring! At first, I thought this video might be a little long (too used to the hasty way things are being presented nowadays). But your pace of talking being somewhat reduced by simultaneously drawing/writing your ideas down actually really got me! That was a great video, with a lot of key insights! I loved the idea of the "choices to make meaning", and the fact that you can learn how to make those choices more effectively. I find that one of the barriers that people have with "learning visual thinking" is that the examples you find around there (like your own sketch on this video) are... beautiful, and when you compare with what you can do yourself... well, it turns you down!! And that keeps you away from exploring the power of "less-than-beautiful" visuals.

Raúl, I am happy that you found this video useful. I always hate to hear of anyone keeping themselves away from visual thinking, but I totally understand what you're saying. Here's a handful of things I do/say to help keep people motivated: 1. Don't compare your insides to someone else's outsides. It's never fair to yourself. 2. Practice makes progress. It's not about perfection, it's about your progress over time. I can make the above look beautiful and effortless from my 42 years of drawing experience. 3. Process over product. Shush the Inner Critic by focusing on what you're looking to make happen with your visual thinking (drawing as a verb), not the perfection of the product (drawing as a noun). The latter keeps us from even doing the former. 4. I *do* make my own drawings direct and not overly decorated or illustrated to stick to my own process. If any of those are useful to you and those you're encouraging, please share them.

I am intrigued by this method and realizing how long you have been part of this world, how you helped to build this tool. While your focus is on drawing and visualizing thinking through that, it is also important to note that visual thinking can be done without a pen or paper at all. People can think more visually by just how we take in the concrete world around us. I say this because while I am a #1 fan of getting ideas on paper, I am also trying to learn how to make those fast connections when I cannot stop and write things down esp while in the middle of an activity or project. Is that something you are interested in ever exploring i.e. not just the "getting it down" on paper but also "holding it" in your minds eye between the moments when you cannot stop and physically draw or write?

Great video, thank you so much! I’m very much a visual thinker, and for me actually more advanced tools such as tablet or desktop computer work much better than paper. Ability to move things around, rotate, change size, colors, erase and redraw is big part in my visual thinking process. I wonder what you think about it.

Hello, Fellow Visual Thinker! :^) Personally, I don't categorize electronic tools as more advanced. Pros and cons to any tool. I believe whatever tool is readily available and one uses often is the _right_ tool for them. For example, I am a very happy Surface Pro owner, but I don't use it as a tablet, because I given up too much speed and nuance with a stylus. (Yes, even an Apple pencil is not enough.) I can't archive or distribute my drawings as easily as you can, but that's no problem compared to the benefits to me getting my initial thoughts out. And I use my computer plenty for different things. Currently, I'm designing a new layout for my studio and being able to move pieces around in Illustrator is the right tool for the job. I start pattern designs for fabric and clothing handdrawn, but then scan my work and move pieces around in Illustrator. And I want to give a shout out to switching tools to break your working patterns and see what happens. If you are working with your tablet or desktop computer and feel stalled out, grab paper and pen and go! See what happens. Thanks for your comment and question, Dmitry.

How can I use or can I use your technique to learn Mandarin? What does that look like?

Is there any test for visual thinking?

@Thanh Phan The flipchart is the Sketch-at-Work and my markers are from the German company Neuland. The markers are their No One and Big One styles, they are nontoxic, refillable and you can replace the nibs too. I handmixed the chartreuse color that matches my shirt. Hope that helps!

I'm afraid you're mistaken, we ALL have a "minds eye", it's just that some people are more consciously aware of it. The process of practicing visual thinking does bring it much closer to the surface of our conscious awareness but it is an essential inherent part of human cognition.
