What Is "Time Feel" in Jazz?

Grammy-winning producer and pianist Kiefer's hot take: "Transcription is never really about the notes." Watch this exclusive lesson demystifying "time feel" from his course, Kiefer: Keys, Chords, and Beats available at soundfly.com/kiefer
__
About the Video:
For Kiefer, articulation and feel are much more important - and challenging to learn - than the notes in a jazz solo.
When studying time feel and touch at the piano, who does Kiefer idolize and mimic? Wynton Kelly, Dexter Gordon, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, and especially Erroll Garner.
"Erroll Garner, in my opinion," Kiefer admits, "probably has the most intricate time feel of any pianist of the 20th century."
But to practice this, one really needs to be immersed in the music, deeply listening to pieces with an ear towards the performances and gestures of the musicians beyond the notes themselves. Because while rhythm is something you can notate and measure, time feel is more fluid and influenced by habit. That's why Kiefer tries to sing his favorite solos before playing or transcribing them himself.

As your first like, thumbs up… I believe it’s obligatory to leave a message. This is a very good video and even though it’s short form, 4 minutes long it’s packed with very useful information and analogies. From working in the music industry for the last 20 years I totally agree with the object of this video. And as I get better playing the keys, I can see myself developing my own feel while I’m dancing around the edge of the pocket. Believe it or not there is a little thin line that you can shuffle across back-and-forth, for a smooth in the pocket transition.
