What is the Southernmost City in the World?

People have asked time and time again what the northernmost town in the world is, so I decided to ask what the southernmost city is! (Turns out, the answer's also pretty technical here)

Ich Zweifel trotzdem irgendwie daran, dass du aus Deutschland/Österreich kommst, weil du akzentfrei Englisch sprichst und dein deutsch irgendeinen seltsamen Aktzent, den ich noch nie gehört hab, hat. Where are you from? The KZread screenshots in the video are in German. Much of your material is in german. Your German is very good and understandable. I somehow doubt that you are from Germany / Austria because you speak English without accent and your German has some weird accent I've never heard.

    I don’t think you are correct. Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world because it is actually a city. A city is a settlement that has a population greater than 50000, which disqualifies Puerto Williams, which is the southernmost town in the world, not city. The Antarctic bases could not classify as towns either, since their population is below 2500. They do count as settlements though

    Wanna start a country in antarctica, who is with me? There are multiple countries that claimed it as their land so we might have to defend for it a bit but don't worry it's not that valuable so as long as we pose as a threat they would probably not bother to take it back. First participants can become the founding fathers/mothers? Ooh yeah it's also gonna be a constitutional monarchy with my cat being a figure for the head of state.

  • @hobomike6935

    @hobomike6935

    you'd have to import nearly everything to build a settlement/city there. Antarctica has *nothing;* there's really not even any substantial rock you can access as a construction material without drilling through ice to get at it. it's a desert, so you'll have an issue with constantly running out of water after you've melted the extremely thin layer of snow and ice nearby the settlement's location. (you can continue to use snowmelt from the coastal areas, as they receive a few meters worth of snow from the southern ocean.) you could *attempt* to build a sort of "underground" city within the Transantarctic mountain range, as it is host to a few active volcanoes that might provide a source of geothermal heating and energy. Water, extreme cold, and inability to grow food will _still_ be an enormous problem.

    I very much doubt that! Even from New Zealand, Antarctica is too far away and there just isn't many islands like in the equatorial region of the Pacific, is just too much ocean for the kinds of ships they build. If any non-Europeans found Antarctica, it would have been the indigenous people already living in Patagonia who are super close to it and were already used to the cold.
