What is the secret of Scandinavian success?

In the midst of European economic crises, the Nordic region has emerged largely unscathed, continuing to top global indexes in health, education, equality and well-being as well as recording impressive economic growth. Sweden, Denmark and Norway have drawn praise from across the political spectrum; from social democrats to free marketers, while Scottish nationalists often cite the Scandinavian countries as role models for an independent Scotland. But why is this region so successful? What is the secret? Or has the Nordic model gone from being idolised to being romanticised and mythologised? This must watch debate filmed at the Battle of Ideas, includes a remarkable expose of Sweden's dark history of forced sterilisation.

liberals, feminists etc are supporting politicians that are aligned with the dominant class ( rocketfeller, rotschill, Morgan, soros etc),, in fact many ppl ignore it and aren't aware about It same as feminists, the elite class are polluting and ruining the world by making it more indebted and industrialized, they don't care if they destroy the World and cultures, they don't care about the future of your children , racism and migration seems to be a good argument for the elite class to protect the oil industry and their banking sistem , those immigrants pay high taxes and Work for less money which it's what the huge corporations want so they can borrow more money from the banks at the same time It benefits federal reserve in EEUU so the Fed will print more not real money to have an even more indebted country, this is what the Icelanders avoided by imprisoning the bankers and corrupt politicians, hope iceland never join the E.U, Unfortunately most of our leaders only care about money so we will have to wait a long time to have ecológical and clean technology, we could have clean and infinite energy before thanks to nikola tesla

29:13 and in Denmark you can buy a beer for less then a dollar and get about 20% back when you return the flask. That British guy should do his homework next time. His understanding of the VAT is entirely flawed, and he cherry picks between legislation from individual countries to paint an almost dystopian picture of the Scandinavian model. Without considering the framework in which these legislation's exists, Effectively making his hole presentation more of an personal opinion, then a objective statement about society and its form. Also whats with the eugenics part and controlling people?

That Scottish woman makes a lot of sense. It's all about local control. The reason why small states so often manages better than larger states, is because it's easier to feel a part of the democracy and help contribute to the society in a smaller state. A democracy needs to be small for people to feel they are a part of it. If Britain could learn anything from us in Scandinavia, it is that we all have a firm sense of identify while at the same time we co-operate well with our neighbor countries. The tension between Ireland and Britain certainly shows you guys can't really do that. I suggest Britain start breaking up itself into smaller democracies, and then start working better together as friendly neighbors.

Talking of the regressive nature of the tax system in Scandinavia is a bit misleading. The key difference with the UK is that the overall tax rate is much higher, and the government provides much more generous and extensive welfare programs. In the UK you have a two tier system for most things. The wealthy go to private schools average people can't afford. Child care is so expensive that it is better to stay home with your kids than work. Nordic welfare system operate on the idea of universal rights and programs for all regardless of income, rather than extensive means testing. The benefit of that is that because even the well off use these systems it means there is substantial political pressure to keep the quality of these programs high. You don't get the upper middle class to care about say public health care or schooling if they don't use it themselves. The second element is that unions are much stronger in Scandinavia which means the lower wages are pushed much higher. This is in large part a result of governments creating regulation protecting unions, while Britain has been busy busting unions. If people at the bottom earn substantially more then you don't need a tax system redistributing wealth to the same degree. Of course importing the nordic model is difficult since so much hinges on culture. I personally believe much of it is comes don't to high trust levels and a consensus oriented culture. Brits are much more open towards confrontation. That is likely a major cause of the failure of unions in Britain. Rather than having management and unions work together, they waged wars against each other destroying the British economy. My father who is from a Norwegian family with union bosses was shocked by how toxic labour relations were in Britain when he came there in the 60s-70s. Ultimately I think there is simply a significant cultural difference between the anglo-saxon countries and the germanic ones. When I read British accounts of the Netherlands in the 1600s, you might as well have been reading British or American accounts of Norway in the 2000s. Unions work much the same way in Germany as in Nordic countries, so the nordic model is not completely unique. I think the element Scandinavian countries add is that they are far more anti-hierarchy and class, than the bigger European countries.

That Bruno feller is annoying, all he does is harp on eugenics, sterilization and the dangers of govt turning people into mindless robots instead of responding directly to points being brought up. And he misses the point about the Scandinavian tax system because the tax base in Scandinavia is much more egalitarian to begin with, so the middle classes can afford to pay higher taxes and still come out ahead compared to 'feudal' countries like the UK/USA.

Everything you write is just wrong. Swedish buying power has fallen the last 40 years despite the technological development. Real wages as been at a stand still during the same period. At best. Inflation in this period is massive aswell (of course). The scandinavian progressive tax system basically means that rich people doesn't pay taxes, labourers pay +50 % of their income in taxes. You are clueless. The welfare state or the total state as it was known as when invented by Germany in 1915, has made the swede poorer, uneducated, and not nearly as capable as their fore fathers. I suggest you open a book at some point.

Finland had a AAA rating back in 2014 and it still mostly has (two out of three raters rate it AAA) - I don't know what was the woman talking about. Why didn't they mention a strong emphasis on science (at least in Sweden) since the 18th century. I don't know why Finland was on the side from this discussion - it regularily ranks the number one in many ranking lists. Just recently it had the best score in the stable state index. This discussion was important but I would say it was a bit 'uneven'.

Is homogeneity and routine the secret to success in Scandinavia? On a side note, funny fact about importing high-tech telephone from Singapore in 1984 and nice to see a fellow University of Exeter student asking a question at this debate! :)

There is no scandinavian model . What happened is a historical metamorphose since the medieval period which bring an easily alliance between farmers and workers in the 19th and 20th century, added to a strong tradition of charity since the 16th century due to the severe situation of people and poverty , all this added to the new vision of democratic social theory of 1930 which metamorphosed gradually all this history to an egalitarian and a progressist vision . So, we can't understand the egalitarian scandinavian experience only if we study the history of these countries since the medieval period inorder to understand their attachement to the earth, the importance of farmers and cooperatives, and with the 19th century the introduction of a protected industry which led to the union between farmers and workers, and paradoxaly many reforms of this egalitarian system were introduced by the farmers' unions in the 1910's and 1920's organised in cooperatives to face the foreign big industrial groups, and not by the workers' unions as many thought .

Interesting points made by everyone. Bruno Waterfield made some barmy statements however, going on a rant about Polly Toynbee and bringing up eugenics. Scandinavian sterilization programmes were unconscionable, of course, but eugenics was a popular belief in the early 20th century, based on junk science. Winston Churchill, our best loved Prime Minister, believed in eugenics and argued in parliament that we should take the "mentally defective" out of society and put them in forced labour camps. His thinking was a product of the time he lived in. No social democrat would propose that today. Also, Swedish taxes are somewhat regressive (as are UK taxes because of VAT and council tax), but Sweden has strong trade unions and collective bargaining. Thatcher broke the back of Britain's trade unions. That's why Sweden has much more income equality than us.

I did find that Bruno guy a British, one-note joke wanker. Sterilization this and sterilization that. But there was a point he did make that no one else seemed to address which was actually brought up by a member of the attendees. We hear about specific success stories from the nordic countries, but they are few and really exceptional individuals. Personal economic growth is a concern for some because while yes, one may get time to go on holiday, it doesn't really matter so much if one lacks the physical means to have a savings account in order to have money to spend on frivolous things. For some people we do wonder if we can afford to purchase things just because we want them or because we want to give a gift, for example, to the ones we love.

The secret of the success of the Scandinavian countries lies, as was pointed out by several of the speakers, in comparative freedom from corruption, perceived benefits from the rates of taxation and a respect for other peoples' opinions. This is the very opposite of the "raucous public state" advocated by Bruno and practised daily by the almost exclusively right-wing British press. His picture of Swedish social engineering is not in itself incorrect, only about 40 years out of date. If Scotland wants to go down the "Scandinavian road" it will have to get used to a more mutually respectful level of public debate, even if this will be less satisfying to the egos of the debaters.

Oscar Hult Adults usually can save money, and can save more money if they don't have to pay high taxes, babies need others (in this case the gov.) to take care of them. In low tax countries the economy grows and you may find a job, high taxes inhibit economy growth. I prefer to keep my money, save for future needs than send my money to the gov. which doesn't know better than me where to apply it. In low tax countries the medical care can be cheap. As low taxes stimulate competition.

warriorprince101010 Yes, a bit of socialism could work for rich countries, but my country Brazil, needs small taxes to grow, it always depends on case. I think socialism stops (stabilizes) the growth. When you want to stimulate the economy, you usually reduce the taxes.
