A common question that I get asked is what is the recovery time after rhinoplasty or nose reshaping? And the great majority of my patients are back to normal activities a week after surgery. However the truth is, with recovery after rhinoplasty surgery, is that there is a great deal of individual variability. And we could really look at this from 3 different perspectives. Firstly, what we do actually mean by recovery, because different parts of the nose recover at different times. Secondly, what are the individual factors that influence recovery? And finally, what are the factors that you can do in order to speed up the process, and speed up the recovery. So if we look at the first of these points, what do we mean by the recovery? Well after rhinoplasty surgery everyone one has a degree of swelling. And 80% to 90% of that swelling will disappear on and during the first week. However, a degree of the swelling will remain and a further 80% to 90% will go in the second week. Now the great majority of patients are able to get back to their normal activities, social and professional activities after a week. However, if you have a second week that is to your benefit. The final result, and by that I mean when all of the swelling has resolved is really 6 to 12 months after surgery, and there are particular parts of a nose, the tip of the nose, the bridge of the nose that are particularly sensitive to swelling, and these areas take longer for the swelling to completely disappear. And there are factors that you can do to reduce the swelling, and I'll come on to this. The other, the other aspect of that coincides with swelling is bruising. And about 10% to 20% of my patients will have bruising under the eyes. And this is because this is the thinnest skin in the entire body, and bruising here can last for even 6 weeks after surgery. You can cover this with makeup after 1 week, and it's barely noticeable to the human eye. In terms of pain, well the great majority of patients have relatively mild pain after rhinoplasty surgery, and most patients don't require analgesia 48 hours after surgery. So most of the discomforts is over the first 48 hours, and analgesia relieves this. In terms of sensation, well there is usually some change in sensation in the tip of the nose, and some patients will report some changes in the feeling in the upper lips, some stiffness in the upper lip. The great majority of patients, this will resolve over the first few weeks. However, occasionally this can last for many months. In terms of feelings of congestion, well the swelling on the inner lining of the nose results in less comfortable breathing, and changes in your sense of smell. And as the swelling resolves over the first few weeks, the sense of smell and your breathing will improve. And in general your breathing improves vastly over the first week, at the end of the first week, and the sense of smell improves over a 4 to 6 week period, in general. In terms of going back to regular activities...

It’s been a little over week & although my breathing has definitely improved since surgery, it’s still very difficult. I went from both nostrils completely blocked & needing to wake every hour to moisten my mouth from breathing from it & getting so dry I choke to being able ti breathe a tiny bit after a week but still super congested.

Dr what are splints used to for and do you use it??
i have a fat nose it bother me all my life i like to hide my face hate taking photos, i finally saved up i like to do the rhinoplasty surgery please give same advise because i am fear i do see some photos the nose looks worst after surgery i love to do this if i am in a good hand. thanks
Hi Dr, After open rhino, approximately how many weeks does it take for an excessively upturned nose get back to no longer being upturned too much? Also, when will the upper lip gain fully movement so that one can show their upper teeth when smiling?

I wish you could do my nose. I hate tip of my nose,is round,lond with big nostrils😭 But I'm too scared to do anything about it

10/28/20 my 17y/o daughter had her surgery and it has been 2 very traumatic weeks! The worse part of recovery is not the pain but to see your face different! My daughter had her nose like yours and thinking now that was the nose that suited her face unless this one after time looks better but for now it is just very hard and scary. In my humble opinion don’t do it, stay safe with the one you have, but if you decide to do it I wish you good luck.

Ohh I’ve waited 40 years with a bad huge nose, and I finally took the jump. I’m ecstatic about the results, and my only regret is THAT I WAITED SO LONG TO DO IT!!!! Find the right dr. and build your confidence! You can do this!!!

@@sisimalass181 I think it depends on the surgeon. Dr Silva's work is very subtle. You can see from his website that if anything he under rather than over corrects.
How long do you recommend taping your nose for after rhino? I am on my second rhino plasty and am greek italian with thicker skin. It is almost 12 weeks and I still tape everynight. I feel like my final result is showing more and don't know how much longer I should tape. I've heard 2-3 months. My doctor doesn't believe in taping, but I feel it is working. Does it really reshape the nose and would taping long term for up to the whole year of healing give optimal results? I'm willing to do whatever it takes, but don't want to waste my time taping if nothing will change. Thanks

@@BellaAphrodite the name is MICROPORE 3M skin tape. It’s very sticky and once I put it on, it stays on 7-8 days. It’s not something I would put on at night abd off in the day. One must be very careful putting it on, and even more carefully to remove...

It’s super easy to put on just don’t pull it off . Let it fall off in the shower . It really does helps with swelling and shaping 100 but dependent on the person and what work they’ve actually had done it’s not for everyone who has had surgery
Hello my nose after 5 year post rhinoplasty doesnt recovered , ı mean swelling still continuing what can ı do what would be the reason?

Apparently ethnics, (Asians/Arabs/Africans) etc have far thicker skin than Caucasians and tend to swell for longer. How is your nose now? If it hasn't improved, I would see your PS for a steroid injection possibly.

Exactly! They elites have planned since the 80’s to screw your rhinoplasty results! Get real folks, we all essentially eat the same food, and many recovered well and look great

The best Doctor use natural tissue from the Rib cage and ear cartilage to reconstruct the nose ..not silicone ! Korean Asian doctors are the best for natural nose job !

but they are used to doing it on Asian features. Not sure how good they will be with European clients. Also, they are just as expensive as the ones in Europe. Why bother to travel all the way to Korea? !
