Transcript of What is the recovery after blepharoplasty- eyelid surgery- The truth revealed
A common question I get asked is, what is the recovery time for eyelid surgery also known as blepharoplasty? Well, on average the great majority of my patients are back to normal activities within a week after surgery. However, the truth is that there is a significant amount of individual variability in terms of recovery. And really this can be thought about in 3 different ways. And firstly what do we actually mean by recovery, because different parts of the eyelids recover at different time points. Secondly, what are the individual factors that influence recovery? And finally what can you do to speed up the recovery process? So we take the first of those elements. So what do we mean by recovery? Well, common things such as bruising and swelling, well 80% to 90% of the bruising and swelling will have disappeared in the first week. And when we're looking at upper eyelid surgery and upper blepharoplasty, the majority of patients can go back to social activities, and professional activities within a 1 week time point. However, with lower eyelid surgery, the recovery is slightly slower, and 80% to 90% will go in the first week. A further 80 to 90% will go the second week. The majority of patients can really go back to their normal activities within a 2 week period. At that point, most of the swelling will have gone. Most of the bruising will have gone. With bruising, there are certain parts of the eyelids that are particularly prone to bruising. Just below the lower eyelids is the thinnest skin in the entire human body. And a bruise here which can happen about 10% to 20% of the time, a bruise here can really last for a 6 week period. It can be covered with makeup after a 1 week period. In terms of swelling, well the great majority of swelling resolves in the first couple of weeks. However on occasion, particularly with the lower eyelids, there can be more persistent swelling, and that can last for several weeks. And usually that can be a pre-existing condition that maybe causing this, but sometimes it could just happen. In terms of pain, well the great majority of patients have very minimal pain after eyelid surgery. The majority of my patients, and more than half of my patients do not take any analgesics after surgery. However, if you do have some discomforts, and ache, that would usually resolve within a 48 period of time, 48 hour period. It'd be unusual to need any analgesia after that. In terms of dryness, well most patients don't have so much dryness after eyelid surgery. But occasionally, particularly if you're prone to dry eyes, having eyelid surgery, having swelling can increase the feeling of dryness. Usually that will last for just a few weeks and taking tear lubricants will help with that. And ultimately it's also the surgical technique that is used, and a conservative approach that preserves the eyelid tissues, and the muscle beneath the eyelid skin. Usually it preserves your blinking, and really limits the amount of dryness that you have. In terms of activities, well in terms of reading, in terms of using the internet, watching television, really you can do these after several days after surgery. However, in terms of lifting things, more strenuous activity, it's very important for the first week to 2 weeks to take things very easy. Anything that could potentially increase your blood pressure should be avoided completely. And this is because if your blood pressure is going up and down, you'll have a tendency to get more bruising and swelling, which will delay your healing. In terms of your vision, well your vision should be pretty good even after the surgery, day 1. And this is because the surgery is only on the eyelid. It's not actually on your eyes. And it's fair to say that sometimes you can have some bruising and swelling, and putting in the eye drops can also blur the vision. But still you'll be able to see clearly and functioning and be able to read and watch television, and do those normal activities. In terms of exercises, well in terms of returning to exercise, it does depend on the type of surgery you've had.

This is not true, he is only trying to sell his surgery, it takes at least 6 yes 6 weeks to be able to go out in public. I had it and it worked out great with no pain , but people plan to take 4 to 6 weeks off, unless you work from home. Do not believe this guy.

I am 35 years old and I had this surgery 3 weeks ago. Even though I have a little more of swelling, my eyes look great. Also, I have a bit of tense in the scar area (I had a canthopexy as well in order to tighten the muscles beneath the eye ). But I have to say that I am very happy with the results, because for the first time in my life I do not look tired, I do not have eye bags and I do not have extra skin, and my eyes do not go puffy in the morning no matter what I eat or drink in the evening. My surgeon did not take out fat, but only redistributed it on order to fill the tear through (I had that issue too, because I have super skinny face along with eye bags - very unhappy combination of face features :) One thing that could be a little strange only for the people who do not have a fat in the cheekbones area, like me - after this surgery you might have a little hollowed eyes (because you have no fat on the cheekbones, without your eye bags as well, the hollowness can become little more obvious). Because the amount of my redistributed fat was not enough to solve a tear through, I can solve that with the fat grafting or hyaluronic acid, but even without that my eyes look 10 times better. I look like completely different person (no one will notice that you have operated something, but you will look completely refreshed and restful) . I believe I need to wait for a 3 months at least for the final results and I hope my eyes will look even better after the healing process is complete :) PS.Sorry for my bad English :D

I had upper and lower blepharoplasty just over 3 weeks ago. I'm recovering well apart from some swelling and bruising. There was a small amount of bleeding from one of my incisions on day 5, and I was scared that my stitches had broken, but everything was healing fine.

I'm 3 months post lower lid blepharoplasty, and I still have chemosis of one eye, and sagging/swelling/bruising of the same eyelid. I'm scheduled to see a ophthalmologist in 3 weeks. In the meantime, the other eye looks great, and the fat bags beneath both eyes are definitely not there anymore. I can't pin my plastic surgeon on when he thinks this will be resolved, but when I asked if it would be another four months, he said that it should be before then anyway.

I'm 3 weeks post-surgery and have chemosis, too. Very disappointing, as it gives my lower lids a saggy, droopy appearance. It's comforting to know that it can resolve itself. It's just so disappointing, as I hoped to recover quickly, and I still don't like showing my face without big glasses because of the droop and the chemosis, which makes me look like I'm about to cry. Is there anything you're doing to help the chemosis go away? My doctor told me to massage that area.

@@francophiledawg9059 I'm now 5 months post surgery. I've had two rounds of Tobradex (4 times a day for 2 weeks), and the first time showed big results in reduction of the swelling and redness. The second time I still had some swelling and redness, but not as much, and so there was a small change but not huge. I still have redness on the border of my lower eye lid and some swelling of the lower eye lid, but it's an improvement. The sagging hasn't improved much. The ophthalmologist I consulted turned out to be an occuloplastic surgeon. Although he, like my original plastic surgeon, hopes that everything will go away with time and conservative measures, he did reassure me that there are further surgical measures they can take--namely sewing my eyelids shut to get rid of the chemosis, and performing canthopexy (again) to the outer corner of the eyelids to get rid of the drooping. As far as what I'm doing: I'm cleaning my eye with baby shampoo/water in a spray bottle, that I spray onto a paper towel, twice a day. I'm doing a warm compress (basically soaking that same paper towel in warm water, then holding it to my closed eye. I'm still lifting my lower eye lid with my finger, but only 3 times a day for ~20 seconds. No matter how you wash your hands, this will put you at risk for an infection. I had styes erupt all over my eye, and had to take an oral antibiotic to get rid of them. My next scheduled appointment is in several weeks, when I'll be approaching 7 months post surgery. I hope you resolve more quickly than I have so far.

Is it normal to have to ice your eyes with light salt in icy water four months after a Blepharoplasty? I got Chemosis in the right eye From the lower and the left eyeball feels weird under the lid and it’s almost 4 months. Will the dryness and large eyeball under the lids feeling go away? I need to know to inform my viewers on KZread as to why this is happening.

TNT Myers I had my upper and lower eyelid surgery because I am in my late 50s four months ago. My complications afterwords were a Millia on the left eye, Chemosis in the right eye for 21/2 months, Eye dryness, and my eyeballs feel large under the upper lids. I literally added my eyes to my prayers every night and still do. I did extensive research to learn how to make the inner eyes healthy. I drink lemon aloe raw honey mixture every morning that I make fresh. I take Lutein and bilberry every day. I put fresh aloe from the plant on my face and upper eyelids in the morning and at night to help heal them naturally. I document my journey and knowledge learned on KZread For any one else who experiences complications afterwords. There is no way to predict how surgery will turn out.

I have had upper and lower blep surgery and I’m only 32, due to genetic bags and hooded eyes. It’s been a year and my advice sincerely from the bottom of my heart is don’t bother. Why? Well first off my upper eyelids are uneven, secondly I have a permanent scar, 3 both my lower eyes bags differ one has a tiny bag other is okay. I wish I had just left them alone. I’m am now paranoid and constantlylookingvin the mirror. Spend your time and focus on life and staying happy accept we are just like this otherwise you’ll spend yr life having revision surgery other procedures and still not be happy it can drive u insane. Okay hopefully I have convinced someone it’s not worth it and saved someone from a life of potential paranoia and regret. I look like a troll jigsaw. Amen and good bless u all a great life ahead of happiness and self love. Learn from my mistake.

The exact thing happened to me, but I am twice as old as you. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I now have to wear eye makeup at home to not look ridiculous. Each of my eyes are totally different from the other. I am having four new problems that I didn't have before. I regret my decision too, but I know I am at an age where it can't be perfect, but it certainly didn't turn out like I thought. The surgeon I went to has been on television many times and is called "the best facial plastic surgeon in the U. S." I go back next week so I will have to just wait and see what he says all of the problems are. I am not optimistic. BTW, I am not Gordon; I am his wife. Thanks for reading my comment, and I hope your eyes have improved since your surgery.
