What is the reciprocal function

👉 Learn all about reciprocal functions. A reciprocal function is a function of the form f(x) = 1/x. The graph of a reciprocal function is composed of the vertical and the horizontal asymptotes and the points where the curve turns. For the parent function of the reciprocal function, f(x) = 1/x, the y-axis is the vertical asymptote while the x-axis is the horizontal asymptote. The points that the curve turn are the points (1, 1) and (-1, -1).
The transformed form of the reciprocal function is of the form f(x) = a/(x - h) + k, where a is the vertical stretch, h is the horizontal shift and k is the vertical shift. The line x = h is the vertical asymptote and the line y = k is the horizontal asymptote. To graph the reciprocal function, we form the table of values and plot accordingly.

Ahhh. Thank you! I understood how to solve reciprocal functions and all, but I never really got how it works, and WHY it's true. This video cleared it all up in just 5 minutes. Thank you for that!

what if you already have a set of values and don't have the equation and need to fine the reciprocal of the values to plot the reciprocal graph? would you just do 1 divided by the existing y values?

you would plug in the existing values into y and leave it as y= 1/x, and solve for x that way. EX: 10= 1/x (multiply x on both sides) 10x=1 (divide by 10) x=1/10 Hope this helps!

A question , is the identity function same as the linear function or is it something else ?
