What is the PERFECT movie?

Фильм және анимация

I was thinking about something Christopher Nolan said recently, and it got me thinking...which is hard for me, as you can see.

To me what makes a good movie is the historic accuracy. I used to like the original Top Gun, but now I learned about the experience of Navy pilots that served in Vietnam, I like it even more. The final dog fight is based on the 1981 freedom of navigation exercises. But the way it was fought was based on the the dogfights happening over North Vietnam in 1972. Tom Cruise’s famous line is “I’m going to hit the brakes and he’ll fly right by.” I heard so many people growing up calling that maneuver totally unrealistic, BUT the Vietnam Vet navy pilots actually pulled that off, in order to get a Mig driver from behind to over shoot and fly right out in front, pilots like Duke Cunningham, would do something like jam the brakes, put the jet to idle, go push the stick hard forward and pull it right back and “Fox Two!” (Which is a good book by the way) And Tom Cruise doesn’t get enough credit for having the actors get in the jet for the sequel. It made it more engaging for the audience and it’s about time “the talent” get to know what it’s like to be a stunt guy.

Yeah, I can see how accuracy could be that thing that puts a movie over the edge from good to great. But then…look at a movie like JFK - not exactly accurate, downright making stuff up at times, but still a really great movie!

Good conversations in this video! I think a really good movie is one that makes you feel the emotions. You forget the character is not really the actor. I think I like true story movies the most. Although, I wonder how much is dramatized. You know I love Schindler’s list. It’s because it’s all the emotions, the black and white makes it feel dated. Saving private Ryan is one I can watch over and over because it’s like you find something new every time you watch it. A movie that can make you angry or cry and make you forget you are watching a movie is a perfect movie to me.

Have to remeber when Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption came out, Pulp Fiction was a hit and it was something people were talking about scenes and going to the theater multiple times to watch. Shawshank was a slow burn because it didn't do as well in the theater but because it was on basic cable tv often more people picked up on it and it became one of their favorites. as for Perfect films there are none as nothing is perfect however you can rank from Great to Terrible. I disagre with the assertion you need to watch more movies for this or that some people just have a small collection and some people will say watching too many movies can dilute those favorite ones. Also not everyone bought movies back then just watched on TV and rented occasionally. it picked up in the 90s but not everyone had a VCR, then DVD player and so on so just saw what they got over-the-air or with theri tier of cable TV.

I get what you’re saying - but I just think that in this day and age, people use hyperbole to the extreme (ironic). It’s either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever, and not only should people think about their hyperbolic tendencies, but especially when they rate things, they should be able to articulate why. It’s all about perspective…

Much like food, variety is the spice of life. What makes a good movie...the characters and writing. The Plot can go either way but the characters and their interactions with others with their unique personalities are vital in a good film. The writing is the catalyst of how these characters meet and respond to one another. The Crow is my favorite movie of all time. The plot of the movie is simple, however the fact is many different roles play an integral part in the life and death of Eric Draven. Same with Dumb and Dumber, just a bunch of idiots on a road trip to return a suitcase. But man, the two protagonists make every situation into a hilarious ordeal. Yet, another favorite, No Country for Old Men does an uncanny job at story telling. The film brilliantly uses editing and sound design in order to convey a sense of tension in many scenes. While most movies use dramatic music to set the tone such as a killer going after someone, in No Country, a simple camera angle along with solely the sounds of footsteps creates an unmatched atmosphere that completely engrosses the audience all while not even blaring out one single note of music. Case in point, the shootout between Moss and Anton Chigur at the hotel. I can go on and on with other movies like Se7en, Aliens, The Warriors, The Ten Commandments, Batman v Superman, Collateral, and Hangin with the Homeboys. All some of favorite films ever with distinct styles of story telling all done by wonderful characters and writing. Also, I think another good question would be, what is your favorite scene in those favorite films? What ONE scene would you say encapsulates the true essence of the movie and film maker.

Hmmm…a great question! Inception - though there are many fantastic scenes, the hallway fight is probably the one it’s best known for. But what really made me buy into the movie is the first sequence, all the way up until Leo’s character is dumped into the bathtub and the rushing water manifests into the dream. I knew I was in for a treat. With Zodiac - I think the interrogation scene between Toschi and the other two detectives and Arthur Leigh Allen is just amazing, but it all culminates in the scene at the coffee shop with Toschi and Graysmith, where Graysmith lays out his work. So many great scenes in that movie with an absolutely stellar cast.

For me there are a few things to unpack when it comes to perfect movie and also ratings. First with rating anything subjective it can never be perfect for a lot of reasons. Sound design is huge in a movie but in certain genres sound is way more important. Video games are a good example of this too. An objectively bad UI in a shooter stinks but not a deal breaker. A bad UI in a RTS/Strategy game might make it unplayable. Which I think highlights a empirical scale in any rating with a movie is flawed by nature. A 4/5 movie might be perfect almost everywhere but it has one major flaw, when another 4/5 is great nearly everywhere but just never prefect. Those are two very different 4/5 movies. I also think the larger the scale in a subject rating like a movie the worse. I like 1-5 (no half that is just a 1-10). Because you start to really get in the nauce of what is the difference between a 8 or a 9. What is the difference between a 81% vs a 82% etc... Now when it comes to a "perfect" movie I ask myself what do I want out of a movie. A perfect movie will always be subjective and for me I'm looking for a 3 major things from a movie 1. Entertainment - How fun is it to watch 2. Though provoking - Does it teach me something, give me a cool insight 3. Art - Not the same as entertainment but the experience of the movie. How it is shot. Are there directions and concepts that tie into the movie. If all three of those I have no major gripes with it "can" be a perfect movie. The final aspect is how does it speak to me. There is as you stated there is never a prefect movie for everyone. A movie after hitting those 3 pillars it must click with my biases. Finally favorite movies are Aliens - Grew up on it, prefect action movie for me. Strong characters, great tone, and blastin aliens. Jurassic Park - Interesting concept, fun scenes with dinos, fulfilling character developments. Die Bridge - German movie about WW2 base on actual events. I think it does a fantastic job of highlighting how worthless war is. Not a movie but favorite TV Show - MASH fantastic characters, not knot dark comedy moments, funny, and extremely though provoking episodes at times.

Awesome points! In a lot of ways, when it comes to reviews or ratings, you sort of have to take into account where that person is coming from, which make those ratings as subjective as the movie itself. That’s part of the reason why I don’t tend to give my rating on things. Just because I think it’s perfect doesn’t mean others will - all I can do is talk about why I think the way I do. 🤷🏻‍♂️ And your favorites - those are some great ones, although I’ve never heard of Die Bridge, so I might need to check that one out!

your choices were fine, as in exquisite. I love Zodiac too. But I can see why some may find it too slow. They're too ADD. I love a good slow-burn. But the reason I say Jaws is because I feel like it has something for everyone, literally, adults and kids alike, even grandparents. Jaws is just.. perfect. The family can watch it. The hipster can love it alone with his cats. The movie reviewers love it. People just know it and love it if they are at all inclined to look into good movies to watch. Jaws isn't too over itself and it isn't even close to hammy. It's got it all. Love the show! Keep it up! @@order42show 🙏
