The fact is,,, as long as people keep buying them for their fun to drive and Luxory car factors, and not for "reliability" ,,, it doesn't matter that they are shit after 10 years. People will keep buying them... I agree with your comment thus why I will never buy a BMW.

They aren't unreliable initially though, they become unreliable over time. You can't use the $90k sticker as a benchmark for the car and call it an unreliable $90k car. By the time they become unreliable they've depreciated to the $20-30k range because people know they are/will become unreliable and the price has adjusted accordingly. The $90k pricetag is for best in class performance and state of the art technology, the ~$25k pricetag is for great performance, newer technology and likely expensive repairs down the road.

I completely agree, I have tried a few used BMW’s over the years, but my 2006 BMW 325i E90 has been the most reliable by far. I have taken it from 70k miles all the way to 163k miles, with no serious issues. If you stick with a non-turbo N52 engine you should be riding in style for years. I just sold my '98 328i black/black convertible 3 months ago. It broke my heart. I bought it used when it was 5 years old with 45k miles. When I sold it this year (15 years later), it had 130k miles. I really wanted to drive it forever, but it finally got to the point that it was spending more time with my mechanic than it was with me. I hope the owner puts some money into it and enjoys it as much as I did. I replaced it with a 2015 328i Sedan. I love having all the latest bells and whistles, along with the reliability of a newer car, but I so miss my '98. Best car ever...

I drive a 1992 BMW E34 525i, which I bought new, and now with over 300,000 miles. It's still quiet, clean, and fast enough for me. The key is that I keep it maintained properly, tuned regularly, and when something is broken, it gets fixed before it becomes a major issue. I've had the transmission rebuilt once and had the engine re-sealed twice. Never been in an accident, and my mechanic still cares about it, as much as I do. The only one of this vintage still being maintained in his shop. It still looks clean and mean - black lacquer paint with chrome trim and alloy rims; garaged at home and work. At this point, it still performs better than most current, comparable cars with 2.5 L engines (without turbo boost, of course). A nice leather interior, and great sound system (Alpine speakers with a Pioneer receiver). People have offered to buy it from me, but it would be hard to part with my old friend.

It drives amazing and it seems like previous owner kept maintenance up to the teeth and garage kept it. I had a 2008 335i n54 Engine before this and let me tell you, the 328i is great ! My 1998 328is manual is close to 190k miles and still riding great. Repairs done over the years: replaced cooling system (radiator, water pump, thermostat, etc), power steering reservoir and associated hoses, valve cover gasket, alternator, spark plugs, suspension system, belts, fluids (engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering oil, rear differential oil) and brakes. Next to do is oil filter housing gasket. Reliability is relative to expected miles traveled before any of those services must be done. If a BMW needs more frequent service than a Toyota, then by definition, Toyotas are more reliable. And at a minimum, will cost more in time and money to operate. I would consider my repairs fall under wear and tear and am happy so far.

The most reliable BMW that I recommend is any BMW that has the M54b25/M54b30 motor mounted to a manual transmission. Hands-down the most solid combination BMW has to offer. I own a 2005 325CI E46, over 300k on the original clutch, transmission and engine. No major issues, everything works like new. I drive a lot too and use the car as my daily driver, even in the winter. My mechanic whose a BMW specialist told me that he had a customer with an E46 325i (with the same engine) with more than 600k on it and the customer was trying to kill the engine, but even after running it dry of oil it just wouldn't give up.

In our mountainous terrain, the low geared diff with a manual trans works like a treat. The e46 has classic elegant lines, and has been extremely reliable. My 2 cents.

Still looks good for a 13 years old car. No turbo, no carbon buildup, no HPFP issues, no overheating. Yet a very decent 5.9s 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph). Engine noise over 4.5k RPM is sublime. I've got to watch out for the water pump and thermostat. And the ABS pump, and the oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, head gasket, vanos solenoids, coil pack. Other than that... Luckily no problems so far, touch wood. If you want s reliable car, but a Toyota. If you want a fun car, BMW is a good place to start but it will break. Just know someone who can fix them at a reasonable price, avoid the official garage.

My sweet spot is an E46 3 series. Best tips: low mileage, get a Carfax report and look for good service records, and get a pre-purchase inspection. Good dealers/sellers will let you take the car to an independent shop or have a mobile inspection service look at the car. There isn’t a car out there that requires zero maintenance. Parts will fail. Things like oil and fluids have to be changed. Do some of the work yourself, or find an independent shop that will work with you on price. BMW’s aren’t bulletproof, but with good maintenance they’ll be good to you.

Awesome video man. I've owned a 1984 325e, a 1979 635CSI, and now my 2001 M5. The '84 and '79 we so simple and easy to work on. The M5 is like owning and operating an alien spacecraft in comparison. Of course, it's like an alien spacecraft performance wise compared to those older cars too! When I do replace my daily driver someday - a 1995 Honda Accord that's still strong at 250kmi, and is a blast to beat around in - I may just scour the country for an older E30 again. I owned a 1991 750 and it was a good car. Biggest problem a lot of owners face is the inability to ignore dash lights. You will spend thousands trying to get the lights out and they don’t affect the reliability of the car. Drove mine many many miles and it never left me stranded.

Also have a 2000 323ci with 250K miles that was my daily driver for 6 years until I bought my 86' e30.(now she just sits in the garage until further notice) Both are fantastic vehicles with amazing reliability. I also live in Michigan and see salty roads every year and can tell you these cars are far less rusty than my truck that only has 100k miles on it. Hopefully this helps anyone looking to buy a Bimmer.

Great stuff brother! I happen to have have a 2011 BMW 335i Msport convertible with the Msport package and premium package! It was a lease car and was maintained very well! Super clean in and out, and fairly low mileage! It's fitted with the N55 motor which, in my opinion, sounds way better than the N54. A lot of tuners and young guys prefer the N54 twin turbo because of the enormous power potential! The twins scroll single turbo is seen as the more reliable motor although they been known to get around 550 to 600hp to the wheels! Which would you prefer? Could you do a video on those particular motors?

4 years ago so I’m wondering how that 335i fairs now? Those cars are notorious for having bad turbos that you need to replace, that’s why the 328 and the 128 were seen as more reliable though they make far far less power

However I wish I was driving a single VANOS 1996-1998 528i like yours as that engine is the best for E39 - iron engine not aluminium one like mine - Plus it has a single mass flywheel which means better reliability and less cost for the clutch, even if the dual mass flywheel - which is on 530i - offers you a smoother riding.

Most people who can afford a BMW just lease for 3 years and then lease a new one every 3 years. Then they don't worry about repairs. I bought a 3 year old 2000 540i. I had a lot of fun with that car and had multiple repairs, like radiator replacement due to plastic radiator plumbing. At one point I paid $3000 for complete suspension replacement. The car felt like a new car after that. A few years later electronic gremlins crept in. Then I traded it in and bought a Honda CRV. The Honda CRV only needed oil changes, one set of tires and a battery, no other repairs even after 70,000 miles.

I have a 2007 328i. I love my car. As far as repairs go, I do my own repairs. I order the parts from eBay. Then I lookup what I need to do, then I fix it. Yes I'm a mechanic. I went to school for almost 5 months to fix cars and diesel trucks. When I bought the car I didn't know if the last person kept up the maintenance. I bought my 2008 BMW 335xi (N54 engine) with 87k miles in 2016, one owner, almost all service records (water pump replaced at 60k). No significant issues except the oil pan gasket but it leaks very little so far, so I still have some time. Changed all fluids immediately (oil, coolant, steering, front diff, rear diff, transfer, ATF with filter), spark plugs, coils. Currently running stage 1 MHD flash, runs great, preparing for stage 2 (downpipes+charge pipe). Some of the issues with n54 I knew before the purchase, some of them I learned after, but so far I was lucky and did get any of them.

It's hard to sum up everything, but I'd say somewhere around 2-3k for everything. It's easy to estimate, any part you can install yourself would be $200-$300, like the oil catch can, blowoff, chargepipe. Anything you need a mechanic for and a lift is about $500-$1000, like downpipes, intercooler, etc. Also, the suspension cost me about $1500 (Bilstein B8 + H&R Sport springs). You can go further and replace turbos for about $2k and get up to 500-600 hp.

I have a 2007 BMW 323i with 209000 km, and I have had nothing but the usual maintenance items that you expect with a vehicle getting up there in mileage. New suspension pieces, worn driveshaft carrier bearing, brakes, and most recently a new water pump and thermostat. It has been utterly reliable in all weather conditions (i live in Ontario) No gasket leaks except for a minor rear main seal that sweats as is expected. Despite living in salt country, there is no rust and the underbody is rust free as well, this with no rustproofing. So , for me, because i can do alot of my own maintenance, this car has been reliable, rust free, and a real pleasure to daily drive.

I have also owned benzes in the past and have not experienced great things in the way of fit and finish. That being said I know they have gotten better in recent years, just my 2 cents.! Also regarding the Gallardo I will be showing more and one great one coming up this week so stay tuned. I would love to show more Lambo content, but most of my watchers prefer the BMW. Intent so I deliver. Cheers.

The old M-series engines in the E39s and E46s are some of the most stout engines of their time. The M52 and M54, together with their predecessor, the M50, are great. Both the E39 and E46 have their problems, as all older cars do, but they're definitely not half bad cars, even reliability wise. They're also old enough to not have all sorts of finicky electronics (hell, my 323i has traction control that can be fully disabled with one press of a button, and that's about it when it comes to "fancy" electronics)- they're pretty great overall.

I have a 2011 328i XDrive… Wonderful car can’t complain… My first BMW was a 2004 530i I kept up with all the maintenance so I never really had any issues with it.

Most people that buy BMW don't look for simplicity, reliability, and retainability. Their main three priorities of buying a BMW is for performance, luxury and technology.

I don’t understand how BMW is ahead in technology! They don’t even have lane keeping assist as standard feature. I am looking around for a used but recent bmw. What I found was hilarious. Their “Driver Assistance Package” consists of a rear view camera, that’s it! Wow! I installed a rear view camera and much more on my 2009 Sonata myself. How is this even considered as an optional package at a time when Tesla is producing almost self driving cars! Pathetic! Whatever though. Growing above the technology part, I’ll still get a bimmer, not for its technology, but for its ride quality and handling joy. That’s it.

E30, E28, E34 honestly anything pre 2000s, that's when BMWs were meant to be drivers cars, worked on by the owners, and ran forever if maintained. I still love and adore modern BMWs but back then BMWs weren't "Iphones on wheels" they were purely focused on being the true Ultimate Driving Machine.

New sub, love the content. I accept that the repairs would probably be more frequent than on a lower tier, but could you do an indepth opinion video about the E39 M5? Common issues, etc. I know it has the VANOS problems, but if I found a car that had already had that system serviced/repaired what else would I be in for in the near future?
