What is the "Image of God"? (with Dr. Carmen Imes)

A viewer asks:
“In Genesis 1:27, when it says we were "made in the image of God", What does it mean exactly? I hear people all the time say that it means we were made with the characteristics of God, but I grew and still believe It means we were made in the triune nature of God. We are body, soul, and spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 refers to this when it says "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”.”

Excellent episode that could also lead us to a better understanding of the ‘image of the beast’ as mentioned in the Apocalypse. ✔️

How do I mindfully keep this truth of being His image in the world front and center in my day to day life? That is to say, how do I continually remain cognizant of this? 🤔

The concept of "Birthright" is the key to understanding "Image." When Adam partook of the forbiden fruit his glow that signified his birthright went out and they both saw that they were naked. The Messiah recaptured what Adam lost when he began to glow and a Voice from the cloud said, He is a true Bnai Elohim, (Son of God) listen to him! We too thru conversion have been given the right to "become" bnai Elohim at the resurrection of the Dead. See Luke 20:35-36 & John 1:12-13.

I always love listening to your inteviews with Carmen. This one was great AND I learned a different perspective on the triparte (soul, spirit, body) debate that I did not know, especially that it would not necessarily have beem a view that the biblical authors would hold. As well as the new/current resurrection body. That has given me some food for thought to chew on. Thanks!

I've always been taught that we will receive new bodies in the eternal state. In this framework, our current state is dualistic in a sense. I've had pastors tell me that our souls are fully redeemed and that only the flesh holds it back. In death the flesh will be stripped away and the soul will be attached to a new body as all of creation is renewed.

We will have to face soul sleep as a big option for what happens when we die.

Always love your shows with Carmen. The "image of God" topic intrigues me. I've heard that among Protestant theologies Wesleyanism is closest to Eastern Orthodoxy. Regarding the image of God, EO might understand human beings as icons of God, which seems close to Carmen's position. But, then, EO would see "likeness of God" differently. Image is who we are. Likeness is who we are becoming. Before the Fall, Adam and Eve were on the path to full union with God, and immortality. But with the Fall came death and the path to union was disrupted, because the image of God in us was corrupted, though not so completely that we are unable to choose to cooperate with God's grace. For God's image in us, at its core, remains good. On the cross Jesus defeated death by death, thus ransoming us from sin, death and the devil. Now restored and strengthened by the Spirit, we can again progress in the likeness of God, being participants of the divine nature (2 Pe. 1:4). Any thoughts or comments? Thanks.

Great conversation! You both are greatly appreciated. I just want to know, does John Walton know that he's buying breakfast? I mean, I'd eat bacon on his tab. Altogether, thank you. I'll be sharing with others.

Think of "image" as a "representation of kingly-rulership or a royal office," which in this case is the image of God's rule and office. In Genesis, "image" describes mankind's office as overseer of creation, an office shared in a manner with the office that Creator God holds in heaven. The "image" of God in man is our charge to have dominion over creation. As it were, men and women become God's ambassadors or representatives on earth as caretakers, as God is a caretaker.

Genesis 1 is Lucifer and the fallen angels. They made man in their image. Man is an idol, a trap for angels.
