To me it was the purple belt and if you watch the video you will understand why. What about you? What is the hardest belt to earn in your opinion?

11 years at purple. Brown has been near impossible but last year I learned what it takes. I focused more on college but regret it 😂

Relson gracie stated in an interview that he was a brown belt for 7 years. I don't focus on the belt color. I do focus on learning techniques and being able to use them successfully.

Recall that in the old days there were no belts. Certificates were awarded. Jigoro Kano implemented the colored belt system to give people goals to set and achieve. Unfortunately, the business aspect of martial arts used the belt system to gain profit and in some cases the quality of martial artists began to suffer. People want instant gratification these days. My humble offering is that we, as practitioners of Gracie jiujitsu or Brazilian jiujitsu, maintain the highest standards of our arts and don't allow them to become watered down like karate did. Remember that they are self defense systems first and foremost which are always distinct from the sport aspect.

@@mjp-bi3re the problem is the people training under 5 years don’t take constructive criticism well. It’s better to just prove the point and only give hints and tips if they ask. The west in general is watered down unfortunately.

Wait. Some instructors see the next belt as larger than life, it's like, who are they. They act like each belt is the Everest mount, come on. There arent any Nobel Price nor any salary raises for each belt. I suggest they chill about the belts, seriously. @@BibleBrotherFelipe

I agree. I think Purple also marks a transition from beginner-intermediate to a more advanced understanding of jiu jitsu. And thank you for being so transparent and honest about your journey. Your humility helps lots of us who have had ups and downs throughout the journey. Obrigado!

I bet you're a tought purple belt buddy. I felt like I earned all my belts before I deserved them, but it motivated me to train harder and grow inside them. It must be better when you already consider you've been long enough in a belt, so when you do get your brown you'll enjoy it much more. Oss

It really helps to hear personal experiences of people like Bernardo. Guys like him at the top of the sport sometimes have similar paths to the rest of us, even though they end up taking it to much higher levels. Bernardo is an especially unique combination of relatability along with extreme skill and drive.

It's really good to know this can happen even with the best like yourself, Bernardo. I considered myself an average level purple belt when I was about to compete. Two months before the event I got promoted to brown belt and lost my first match in seconds. I kept having an impostor syndrome for a long while, thinking I didn't deserve my brown belt yet. It has been almost a year now, and I feel it less and less as I kept training. Will do the same tournament later this year. Let's see how it goes! Loving this format of videos. Keep'em coming!

I think Purple because it’s the longest transition. White is the hardest to keep because getting smashed on a daily basis by almost everyone absolutely sucks.

I think once you are a blue belt jiu jitsu becomes more of a "grind" rather than simply a hobby. I think that deters a lot of people from continuing.

Purple, because all the naturally athletic and tough blue belts actually have to work to be well rounded instead of just muscling through with basics

From what I’ve seen, it’s purple. I’m a blue belt but I’ve seen the standards our school enforces on people getting their purple belts. We are affiliated with Helio “Soneca” Moreira. He’s adamant that his affiliations do not hold people back, but he also wants to make absolutely sure that every promotion is warranted.

Personally I'd say black (which I've yet to receive). Getting to purple wasn't that rough but lasting through purple, and brown to get the black - by that time the injuries can really rack up, plus personal responsibilities outside of training. Brown belt has been a woodchipper in terns of resilience. Probably different for the very young or the pros, though. Everyone has their own journey.

Blue belt feels like an endurance match. You just gotta take your lumps. You know some stuff, but you not advanced yet. So now you in this kind of in between spot where it's easy to feel like you hit a plateau on top of all the obstacles life can throw at you off the mats.
