    Bits like that are why the "every Zelda game is the same legend being retold" theory is bullshit. Many of the games blatantly reference previous games, yet you still have people who deny that any kind of timeline exists.

  • @JaidynReiman

    @JaidynReiman

    @@davisbowe8668The timeline exists, but its so incredibly loose that they stretch things all the time. And frankly the lore of the WW tree being the sprout, while cool on paper, is utterly destroyed by the fact that there's no logical reason for it to exist where it is. The gigantic hollowed out tree does not resemble the old Deku Tree in the slightest and the elevation is too high. If you can accept that this is an obvious retcon then you can accept other retcons as well. And you have to ignore minor elements of the world structure such as location names or similar appearing locations in totally different regions as mere references that can be replaced on a whim by the developers whenever they want.

    It's my theory that, since the Deku Tree's a guardian deity of the forests, the Lost Woods isn't a physical location. I think that it's a metaphysical space that any deep forest can "connect" to, thus why it moves around in so many games, never has the same layout, and has a seemingly magical bending of space. It would make sense for a deity to have some control over their domain, after all.

    One thing I've noticed is that many Zelda games have three primary "deities" of some form. You have the three dragons named Eldin, Faron, and Lanaryu in Skyward Sword (plus Levias), in Ocarina of Time you have the Guardian deities (Great Deku Tree, Volvagia, Jabu-Jabu), you have similar deities in Wind Waker (GDT, Valoo, Jabun), and in Twilight Princess you have the Light Spirits who are also named Eldin, Faron, and Lanayru (plus Ordona). These three also seem to be associated with one of the three Golden Goddesses: Farore (the two Great Deku Trees, Faron), Din (Volvagia, Valoo, Eldin), and Nayru (Jabu-Jabu, Jabun, Lanayru). I've often wondered if these "guardian spirits" are in fact the same beings who exist solely to assist the Hero and take on different forms when called on (Well, except Volvagia but I feel like if guardian deities can "die" then they can also be corrupted in some way). This could even explain why the two gigantic trees we see in Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess aren't alive, since the spirit who inhabited them in OoT and WW (Faron) was inhabiting a different being (a dragon in SS, and the light spirit in TP) at the time.

  • @mukomaryan4919

    @mukomaryan4919

    We do know guardian deities in Zelda can become corrupted. In Skyward Sword when we first meet Levias, whom I don't know if he is a different rank from the other dragons, but a deity regardless, find him corrupted by Bilocyte, whom Link had to vanquish in order to restore the guardian's benevolence. And then there's Naydra in Breath of The Wild, whom when first met, is sickened and poisoned from malice. During this period they act unlike themselves, flying erratically, showing that the malice was in the progress of affecting their brain. Once Link cures the dragon, they resume their duties of patrolling the sky just like Dinraal and Farosh. So it's safe to say that guardian deities in Zelda are immortal in the sense that time does not age them, or at least veeeeeeery slowly, but are still susceptible to things like corruption.

    People say that Link and Zelda from SS founded hyrule, but nothing ever says they DID, the Deku tree could have been that one tree from Skyward sword, without it's spirit yet. And the sprout could still exist in all 3 timelines, since OOT Link didn't really up and leave after he saved hyrule in the adult stage, he just got sent to before he entered the sacred realm. 7 years later and the sprout could be in that time too. Oh the pain of timelines :,]

    7 years right before Ganondorf's audience with the king so as to warn him and Zelda about Ganondorf's plans and prevent his attack on the castle. Had Adult Zelda sent Link back in time right to before he removed the Master Sword the king would already had been killed and Zelda and Impa would be on the run from a pursuing Ganondorf.

    Same here yet it's worth noting that in Ocarina of Time the Deku Tree refers to himself as the "source of all life" or something to that extent implying a direct relationship between the Deku Tree and all plant life which maintains balance within the realm where the many Hyrules stand on. Given what happens to the forests of Hyrule should the Deku Tree wither and die i can definetly agree with the notion he's the source from which all plants thrive and grow amidst the demons who would prevent that from happening where he to pass away.

    Mt personal HC for the Deku Tree in general relates to how trees in real-world forests. Forests are all connected via vast webs of roots and fungi. We’ve found that trees can, and do, share nutrients with each other via this system. And even seem to communicate with each other to share dangers (for example, an infestation of beetles might start killing trees in one part of the forest, but after a short while the rest of the forest starts producing alterations to their wood to prevent themselves from also being killed. It’s fascinating). This is also how albino trees exist and actually live. So I HC that the Great Deku Tree is liked across the whole forest via a similar root web (Like the swamp in Avatar the Last Airbender). This is also how I imagine the new Deku Tree has lingering knowledge

    It’s interesting to see the personalities of these Deku Trees. In OoT, if you have Link refuse to listen to the Deku Tree after beating the dungeon, the tree brooks no nonsense and tells Link to listen anyway in a stern, yet calm demeanor. It demonstrates the Deku Tree’s experience dealing with petulant children, either from the Kokiri or Link himself, since it is one of Link’s choices of dialogue in OoT. Contrastly, the Wild Era Deku Tree shows a sort of fondness for Princess Zelda and Link and a reverence to Hylia as he describes the mechanic of the Master Sword where it absorbs sacred light. Considering the Deku Tree is the one that bathes the Master Sword in energy, it could further connect Sheikah ancient energy to Rauru’s light magic.

    The Deku tree reminds me a lot of Jurak from Dark Cloud 1&2. As both Japanese games and Dark Cloud 1 releasing a few years after the Deku tree's first appearance, I have no doubt there was inspiration. Just like the Deku tree Jurak is also a tree guardian spirit. In Dark Cloud 2 Jurak was also resurrected by planting a few trees and time travel, as well as Jurak retaining the memories even from thousands of years ago. Also Jurak is shown to have a lot of elf/dwarf creatures called firbits. However, the firbits don't seem directly connected to Jurak only drawn to him, as many firbits seem perfectly fine without Jurak. I think the biggest difference between the two is that Jurak is far more social. While still within the deep woods, he is always nearby a town. By the end he was a full on mall in his branches. I think he just likes being helpful rather than just talking to the chosen one and that's it.

    The WW tree being inside the original isn't as contrived as you'd think imo. It is obvious by how quickly he burst out of the ground in OoT that he was capable of some limited movement as a sprout since his roots weren't as deep as his predecessor.

    @GabePuratekuta Thanks, I've never gotten a chance to play A Link to the past yet, only A Link between Worlds. It definitely is in the manga by Akira Himekawa. It first shows up in Chapter 4, Page 4, where he tells Link about his parents. Clearly, it's not a Deku tree because he says he used to be a Hylian that just got transformed by the dark world, but yeah, ig he didn't mention it bc it wasn't in the game. Sorry.

    Though from a different franchise, I wonder if Treant from Dark Cloud, and Jurak from Dark Chronicle, are drawn from the same concept as the Deku Tree. They even have their own afflictions wrought upon them by the main villain. The Dark Genie cuts off Treant's water supply, while Emperor Griffon uprooted the counterpart Jurak originally had in the main time period where the majority of Dark Chronicle takes place. And both Treant and Jurak are encountered while you're in the middle of exploring both games' analogues to the Lost Woods. They also seem to reincarnate each time they die.

    Because the devs of Breath of the Wild state they gave the Deku Tree a more "Japaense" style, this implies the Deku Tree on Ocarina of Time was originally European in origin. Talking trees with faces in medieval fairy tales are a staple of Enchanted Forests.

    Excellent video as usual. I think of the Deku Tree as a tutelary spirit like Tom Bombadil in Lord of the Rings (if less mobile) - I think he has a sphere of influence that can keep out any monsters with a lower "power level" (for lack of a better phrase) but not stronger ones (Ganondorf in OoT & Phantom Ganon in TotK). The room with Queen Gohma resembles a more natural spirit temple, so it seems like a trial area the Deku Tree was supposed to protect - kind of a more primitive Forest Temple, and perhaps the immediate source of his power (itself perhaps connected to the Forest Temple). Even though it's a main dungeon as a kid it really has the same relationship as the ice subdungeon to the water temple (or Lord Jabu Jabu maybe) and the bottom of the well to the Shadow Temple - a secondary sacred space. I've wondered if maybe the dungeon under the Deku Tree even served as preliminary training grounds for initiates to go on to the forest temple, which would make an interesting connection for the Deku Tree as keeper of his minidungeon and Saria as the destined Sage. A lot of intriguing possibilities!

    Who here hopes that now that they’ve merged all the timelines into one that they start world building a lot more? More cohesion between eras would be an awesome reason to play more Zelda. I think it’s a series rich with lore, but never utilized to it’s full extent. I know the devs said TOTK is the end of the wild era, but I hope we get a clearer idea of where the next game fits in chronologically.

    I'm getting a lot of nostalgia of 25 years ago when I first played OoT. I was 10, and my friend was playing it. I couldn't help but watch him play. As we all know, it's an amazing, top 5 of all time game. Top 3 for me. It's been a while though. I think I'll try to get the master quest finished. That would be fun.

    I actually have a theory on The Great Deku Tree (OoT), it is a “descendant” of The Great Tree (SS), sometime after the Interloper War, the light spirits made their home in the regions we find them in "Twilight Princess", Faron made his home in Faron Woods and sleep upon The Great Tree over the centuries the tree became alive and transformed into The Great Deku Tree (OoT). I believe Faron (Spirit) is The Great Deku Tree's (OoT) Father/Creator.

    I assumed that after the imprisoning war (TotK) or even before things got hectic, Zelda must have visited the Korok Forest at least once. Considering she is "Hylia's" descendant, could she be the "Goddess" that originally planted the Deku Tree? Or maybe even Sonia? Considering Sonia even remembers Hyrule's history and the puprose of the Lost Woods. We know Rauru's Hyrule had an abundance of Cherry Blossom trees, and nothing stopped either descendant of Hylia to visit Korok Forest to plant a Cherry Blossom Tree so that the future forest spirit could inhabit it. I wouldn't be surprised if they even infused some of their "Holy" energy to make sure the spirit would inhabit the Cherry Blossom.
