What is the function of serotonin in the brain? These scientists may have the answer.

The neurotransmitter molecule, serotonin, is often described as the “happiness molecule,” but that is too simplistic to capture the many roles it plays in the brain. One hypothesis, put forth by neuroscientists Robin Carhart-Harris and David Nutt, is that the serotonin system may be all about overcoming adversity and stress.
This is a preview for a full-length video that was released yesterday: • Serotonin Miniseries
Serotonin (also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is a neurotransmitter molecule used in a huge variety of neurobiological processes. This video is part of a miniseries on the neurobiology of the serotonin system. Link to the rest of the serotonin videos: • Serotonin Miniseries

I remember hearing something about overproduction of serotonin in psychopathy, would explain both aggression and fearlessness experienced by people with that condition

Thanks for your comment! That's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure it would totally explain the symptoms (since lower serotonin levels tend to lead to higher aggression, not vice versa).

@@senseofmindshow it might have been about poor absorption of serotonin leading to a buildup actually, i don't remember. I will send you the source i heard it from though since i remember that

@@senseofmindshowthat’s not true. For example when you think of someone with OCD they’re not generally outwardly aggressive they’re entirely ruled by fear. Psychopathic types tend to be the opposite when see this with the number of school shooters who were on SSRIs. The heightened serotonin blunts the fear response and allows ppl to act on things they wouldn’t normally act on with their baseline levels.

Reframing is fun. Sometimes i just do it as exercises like give yourself a terrible scenario to reframe. Keeps you plastic. People often refer to the difference between slippery scenarios as "Its a fine line". Nah bro. There is no line.
