What Is The Book of Mormon? | Now You Know

Have you ever wondered how Mormons-properly referred to as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-got their nickname? It’s a pretty simple answer. Members of the Church read and revere a book of scripture called the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon is not a replacement or substitute for the Holy Bible but a companion to it. Members of the Church are taught from the Bible and the Book of Mormon and consider both to be holy scripture containing the word of God.
The Book of Mormon takes place in the ancient Americas and is a compilation of spiritual and historical records written by prophets, just as the Bible is. The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the account of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ ministering, teaching, and blessing people in the Americas.
The Book of Mormon teaches the gospel of Jesus Christ, outlines God’s plan of happiness for His children, and tells them what they must do to gain peace in this life and exaltation in the life to come. The Book of Mormon exists to testify of Jesus Christ and His life and mission, confirming what is taught in the Bible and clarifying points of doctrine. Through living the teachings found in the Bible and Book of Mormon, people will find peace and truth.

If you take a look at ChurchOfJesusChrist.org and ComeUntoChrist.org, you'll find that the Church goes to great lengths online to present scripture and other doctrinal statements, words of living prophets, music, and much more, all in a very organized way. There's a wealth of information to be found.

    I'm a Latter Day Saint who has at some point had a desire to take time away from what I've known my whole life to study other religions like Catholicism to learn how much they differ from what I've been taught, though never had the initiative to act on such desires. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one, even outside my own faith, who has such desires as well. Maybe now that I'm almost 30 and almost at a point of independence and with access to the largest database on the planet I'll start doing some research.

    No, not entirely, Jesus taught that faith alone will not save us, only by obedience to his commandments, repentance of our sins, baptism by immersion, and receiving the gift of the holy ghost and enduring to the end continuing to follow the path that Jesus has set for us so we can be more like him in our actions. I am a latter day saint and I have read the book of Mormon. I testify in the name of Jesus Christ that this book is true. I still read this book everyday. This book is truly another testament of Jesus Christ and supports the Bible, are we not told in Zechariah 8:7-8 in the old testament: Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; 8 And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. In the book of Mormon: in 2 Nephi chapter 29: 6- 12 it says: Thou fool, that shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. Have ye obtained a Bible save it were by the Jews? 7 Know ye not that there are more nations than one? Know ye not that I, the Lord your God, have created all men, and that I remember those who are upon the isles of the sea; and that I rule in the heavens above and in the earth beneath; and I bring forth my word unto the children of men, yea, even upon all the nations of the earth? 8 Wherefore murmur ye, because that ye shall receive more of my word? Know ye not that the testimony of two nations is a witness unto you that I am God, that I remember one nation like unto another? Wherefore, I speak the same words unto one nation like unto another. And when the two nations shall run together the testimony of the two nations shall run together also. 9 And I do this that I may prove unto many that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and that I speak forth my words according to mine own pleasure. And because that I have spoken one word ye need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet finished; neither shall it be until the end of man, neither from that time henceforth and forever. 10 Wherefore, because that ye have a Bible ye need not suppose that it contains all my words; neither need ye suppose that I have not caused more to be written. 11 For I command all men, both in the east and in the west, and in the north, and in the south, and in the islands of the sea, that they shall write the words which I speak unto them; for out of the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man according to their works, according to that which is written. 12 For behold, I shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the house of Israel, which I have led away, and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it. I testify that this book is true and Joseph Smith was visited by Jesus Christ and heavenly Father and was called to be a prophet of God, to testify of the truthfulness of the Bible and the book of Mormon. And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

    I’m so grateful for the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If it wasn’t for me studying and praying about the Book of Mormon as a teenager, I don’t know if I ever would have taken an interest in God and coming to know Him. The Book of Mormon is what got me interested in the Bible. Through those and the words from Joseph Smith I’ve learned how to approach my Savior and live daily in His Grace. The Lord has never steered me wrong and He’s helped me get through some really rough trials in my life. I’ll always praise Jesus’ name!

    @@seans5289 The principles of the gospel, when applied in our lives, contribute to peace, prosperity, and even improved economy because of improved general trust. Scripture teaches us to be self-reliant and to serve others. The solution to every human problem lies in the gospel, and we can read about it easily in books of scripture. Of course, reading and studying scripture is only useful if we change our lives to live by the principles, but learning the principles first is important.

    The peoples of the Americas in former times often had no written language. Egyptian writings date very far back, and evidently the people of the Book of Mormon had some knowledge about them. When Mormon compiled the records of his people, he did so in a form of writing that was based on something like Egyptian hieroglyphics; Joseph Smith referred to the form of writing as "reformed Egyptian". I hope that clears it up a bit for you.

    Hi Susan, The Book of Mormon is not a replacement or substitute for the Holy Bible, but a companion to it, and it testifies of Jesus Christ as our Savior. Latter-day Saints believe in an open scriptural canon, which means that there are other books of scripture besides the Bible (such as the Book of Mormon) and that God continues to reveal His word through living prophets. Revelations 22 warns against adding to "the book of this prophecy," or the book of Revelation. Nowhere does the Bible proclaim that all revelations from God would be gathered into a single volume to be forever closed and that no further scriptural revelation could be received. You or others interested can learn more about the Book of Mormon here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oK2KmJOBmJyxlA.html

    If you read the first page. 1NEPHI CH.1 it speaks of the prophet Lehi and his family in Jerusalem (their home) before they left Jersualem to come to the promised land (N America) during the reign of King Zedekiah. And King Zedekiah is mentioned in the Bible and how Babylon captured Jersualem. The very thing Lehi amongst other prophets called by God to preach to the people of Jerusalem to repent or Jerusalem will be destroyed. And so God spoke it and so it did happen. Lehi and his family had already travelled towards the new land, the promised land. The Americas. You wonder where the Indians came from when Columbus discovered America was already inhabited. I read and love the Book of Mormon bc it increased self awareness and made me understand who God and our Savior really are. And how important we are to them but we need to wake up and do the work and not fear but continue to obey with exactness. It really opens up your spiritual eyes and u change. Good is good. GIG always always always. Faith is hard BUT it's a super power. So is prayer. You wont attain understanding of any of the great and marvelous things until you yourself search and do it yourself. It's all true. I know it. I testify it in His Holy and Sacred name, Our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

    twenty20xx Just saying it’s true over and over again doesn’t mean it’s true, the Book of Mormon claims that massive civilization existed in America that build massive structures, had huge battles, and spoke ancient Hebrew. However when we try to find evidence for such claims we find none whatsoever. However when we search for evidence of events told in the Bible, we find everything exactly the way the Bible says. Joseph Smith was a false prophet who was deceived by Satan and is in turn deceiving you. Just like he deceived Muhammad who was the prophet of Islam. They both taught of a different Jesus that Jesus Himself warned of. Matthew 7 21-23 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

  • @00Fisher00

    @00Fisher00

    4 жыл бұрын

    I've got a few answers for you, but the last is probably the most important. First, our emphasis actually can be different depending on the context. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints studied a lot from the New Testament last year. That being said, many people already know about the Bible but do not know about the Book of Mormon. Also, many people who already read the Bible find great value in it but lack some understanding that the Book of Mormon will lead to. The writings of the Bible were from ancient prophets who wrote to the people of Israel, and while they're still very good for us to read, the writings were tailored to people of another time. While the prophets of the Book of Mormon came from the Nephite people, their writings were largely unknown among the Nephites but were instead intended for our time so that God could accomplish a work in our day. Ultimately, though, if you really want to know why we read the Book of Mormon, the only way is to read it for yourself and see. Millions of people have done so and have found immense value in God's word that is contained therein. As you do the same you will understand why.

  • @00Fisher00

    @00Fisher00

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Christ_TheWay The covenant people of God looked toward the coming of Christ for thousands of years, having heard prophecies of His coming. Among those prophets were some whose writings we have in the Old Testament. The Book of Mormon relates a history of a people who came from them. In the time of Jeremiah, there was also a prophet named Lehi, whose life was threatened by people who didn't like his preaching. Lehi was warned by God to leave Jerusalem before its destruction; this was about 600 BC. Lehi's family traveled across land for a time, and then Nephi, one of Lehi's sons, built a boat with the assistance of his family, and they crossed the ocean, landing somewhere in the Americas. There was contention in Lehi's family, and after his death, Nephi left with some family members. Two nations grew out of the families, one named Nephites, and the other named Lamanites after Lehi's first son Laman. (There were subdivisions, but they were all broadly known as either Nephites or Lamanites. I personally think that the Lamanites also mingled with other peoples who lived on the American continents, but they weren't record keepers.) Some of the Nephites retained the records and traditions of prophets, and looked forward to the coming of Christ. In 3 Nephi 11, the account is recorded of Jesus Christ visiting the people there. While among them, He taught them things that He had taught the people of Israel; as part of that He mentioned the teaching of "other sheep" found in John 10:16, and explained to them (the Nephite/Lamanite people who saw Him) that they were among those other sheep. He mentions this in Chapter 15 (at www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/3-ne/15); at the beginning of the next chapter He mentions that He has yet other sheep which are neither there nor among the people of Jerusalem. Later, the Nephites became wicked and were destroyed by the more numerous Lamanites; they last remaining Nephite, Moroni (the son of Mormon, who had compiled the records into the Book of Mormon), buried the gold plates upon which the Book of Mormon had been engraved. Moroni later visited Joseph Smith as a resurrected being to show him where the plates were, and this occurred in modern-day New York. Moroni had been wandering for a couple of decades as the sole survivor of his nation before burying the plates, and the Nephites had about 1000 years to move around within the Americas beforehand, so it's impossible to know exactly where they were, but Moroni ended up in the modern day New York region without having traveled by boat again, so his people must have been in the Americas somewhere. I was hoping to make that concise, but hopefully it answers your question well. On a side note, archaeologists gather a lot about pre-historic peoples in North and South America, but as yet it's impossible to directly associate the Nephites or Lamanites with any of them.

    They kind of skipped over how Joseph Smith translated the BoM. In the video, they show him at a table with the plates writing it out. This is not entirely true, though this is the same kind of flip-chart image I used on my mission. I didn't know then it didn't happen like that. The church later disclosed or made more public, that Joseph had his face in a hat reading the words that appeared on a stone at the bottom of the hat while scribes on the other side of a curtain wrote down what Joseph said. There's even a photo of the stone on the church's website. I feel bad for having misled my investigators about Joseph sitting at a table with the plates, translating them with no mention of his face in a hat reading words off of a stone. It was sad, though I did laugh, that the South Park episode about the church had it more historically correct than what missionaries and the church teach. Even when "I" was an investigator I think I would have laughed at a flip-chart with an image of Joseph with his face buried in that hat.

    Joseph Smith used different methods at different times, and what is depicted here is, in fact, accurate. To suggest that only one depiction is accurate would be over-simplifying things. Some things sound or look more strange (like a man who talks to a bush on a mountain that burns without burning up in order to talk to God, and he has to take off his shoes first), and there's no reason to make people laugh when presenting the gospel. Things that seem strange at first seem less so when we understand why they happened the way they did, but longer explanations aren't possible in short videos.

    @@seans5289 There were many peoples who inhabited various areas of North and South America in pre-historic times, and we're finding more archaeological information all the time, but there is still a lot we don't know. Right now it's impossible to directly associate the Nephites or Lamanites (or any of their sub-groups) with any known peoples. There are a number of Latter-day Saints who do study the subject a lot, and they have their own theories and correlations, but there's really very little that is known with any hard certainty. Personally, I think that Laman and Lemuel probably took additional wives from among other native peoples, which contributed to their different skin colors and cultures, but that also is just a theory, and I would have no idea which early Americans they would have been. As to the history vs. fiction question, Latter-day Saints have no reason to think that any of the account is fictional. The Book of Mormon's primary purpose is not historical (although other records, including some form which the Book of Mormon was compiled, were principally historical in nature), but Latter-day Saints accept the historical elements as being true.

    @@seans5289 to answer your question, I believe, through what the church has taught, that many of the STORIES THEMSELVES are to be taken literally. However, many details such as describing warriors as having “flaming swords” and “armor of bronze and steel” don’t necessarily have to be. By all means they may be literal, but there’s no doctrine in the church officially stating that when god said “smote by the sword” he was speaking of a literal steal blade. However stories such as Lehi leading his family from Israel to the promised land (America), the wars in the Americas, and Moronis death in upstate New York (tho many Mormons believe his journey began in South America, others believe it was much closer to New York. Details as to where these wars took place have zero official doctrine and anything you hear about it is complete theory) are all canon and meant to be taken as literal in church doctrine.

Errors are certainly possible. The Book of Mormon on the other hand is canonized scripture accepted by all of the apostles, prophets, church leaders and members. Big difference.

    @@00Fisher00 I think this is where I have a slight confusion with Mormonism and would love some clarity. How do you justify scriptures which speak of adding and subtracting to the Bible? God can certainly add to His own Word, however where do you justify that The Book of Mormon is an extension of God's Word? Is it just by the belief that Jesus appeared to other prophets?

  • @00Fisher00

    @00Fisher00

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@spdinsbeer1 To clarify, there are no scriptures which refer to adding to or subtracting from the Bible. Instead, a few prophets cautioned against altering their own works during times when the Bible as a single volume did not exist. People sometimes cite Revelation 22:18-19, where John used words including, "if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy," but the Bible was not compiled until several centuries later, so anyone who read his words at the time would have easily understood that "this book" was his own book--what we call Revelation. Moses wrote something similar toward the end of his writings in Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32, but if he had meant that no one could ever add to scripture after him, it would invalidate all of the rest of the Old Testament and all of the New Testament, and that sure doesn't make sense. To answer more of your question, yes, God instructed other prophets. The people of the Book of Mormon left Jerusalem and traveled across the ocean to inhabit a part of the Americas. In that era, being so distant meant that they had no communication with prophets in the area of Jerusalem, but God did guide prophets who were among them, and those prophets' writings were kept for centuries and eventually compiled into the Book of Mormon, so named because the prophet who did the compiling was named the Book of Mormon. I'd encourage you to read it for yourself to know what it is, and as you seek from God to know of its truth you may find it helpful to ask others how they know it is true scripture. Best wishes to you.

    if this were "another gospel" that would be a problem, but it's not, it's the original version, hence it's just fine. John the Revelator claerly predicted that God would send many more angels prior to the glorious second coming of his son. Moroni is just one of many prophesied to come. The good news: you don't need to take anyone's word for it, read the book prayerfully, ponder it's teachings of Jesus Christ, and ask God if it's true. When you ask in faith, God will manifest it's truth to you individually by the power of the Holy Ghost, the only way we can know the truth. When you know, then you can press forward in faith and a perfect brightness of hope.

  • @00Fisher00

    4 жыл бұрын

    Evidence as a historical record, or as a book of scripture? You won't ever find physical evidence that any book is truly scripture. As to the historicity of the Book of Mormon, a number of scholars have attempted to correlate elements of North or South American archaeology with the accounts in the Book of Mormon. Nothing is certain, but some of their idea are interesting. Physical evidence is the wrong approach to take with scripture, though. Even the Bible contains much that correlates pretty well with other historical and archaeological records and data, but no such evidence proves that Jesus Christ was the Son of God. For that kind of evidence and testimony, we go to God directly. Similarly, to know the truth of the Book of Mormon, we study it and then ask God directly if it is true. When He answers, it's worth more than any physical evidence.

Legions of new information about Meso- and Southern America are being found every day. Second off - The soil of Mesoamerica is very acidic. Very few artifacts would survive over 1,400 years in that soil - though so far, some things have been discovered from other ancient cultures in that area of the world.

    @@sheldonsawyer4782 Many people who already love the Bible find great value in the Book of Mormon, much as when we read the Mosaic books we still find great value in the following historic, poetic, and prophetic books. The difference is that the Book of Mormon was not know in ancient days, and was specifically written for the people of our time, so it's not surprising that it should have such value for us.
