    My first car, a 1999 CRV, she was perfect. Well taken care of, she was amazing… she saved my father during a horrible car accident. My father was driving my car and was hit by a drunk driver who was speeding. My car was totaled, all windows were broken, the whole car was just destroyed, engine was still running. My father came out with scratches and a bruised foot. It was God that had gifted me such a perfect CRV to protect my father. In Jesus name, Thank you ❤ 🙏 Amen

    Replaced A/C compressor on 2008 at approximately 120,000 miles. There have been several recalls, including the airbags and rear sub frame stiffener added (rust issue). In Rust belt Chicago, but garage kept, also done at the same time as the A/C this past summer. I am getting nervous, but it does run great. Also own a 2015 with 102,000 and already consumes oil. Do change oil every 5,000. Every 30,000 for transmission oil changes. Use top tier gas. Those maintenance minders are stupid. Thanks!

    New subscriber. Thank you for the valuable info. Now the gratuitous story of my 2015 CR-V. I have 96 K as a second owner and have kept up with all of the required maintenance, including the valve adjustment just recently. All the fluids were changed but, I'm guilty of following the 15% warning about the oil changes. The car has one major issue and I believe it's CVT related. It has a sort of vibration while driving, mostly around 40 MPH. I liken it to a standard 4 speed where the driver mistakenly goes from 2nd to 4th gear, skipping 3rd. The engine bogs down and shudders a little when I'm trying to be gentle on the gas. It has plenty of pickup if I need it but, when I reach 40 and gently keep it at 40, it vibrates/shudders. Could this be the universal joint? The CVT? Just how much would it cost to replace the CVT transmission? I've seen what new cars cost and, I much prefer getting a new transmission than 60-72 car payments of $500 on up! Thank you!

  • @MJ100k

    @MJ100k

    5 ай бұрын

    Thanks 👍 If it’s bogging down now, but it never did that before then it sounds like a transmission issue. If it was just vibration at a certain speed, I’d say it could be a lot of things… anything that spins basically. But if it’s bogging and vibrating - that’s making me lean towards transmission. But I’d take it in to get diagnosed first. Don’t tell them what you think it is… Just tell them the problem and let them figure it out lol To replace the transmission (if that’s what you need) - cost would vary depending on where you go. Shops are charging a lot more than they used to due to inflation..But you’re probably looking at 3-5 grand. 😬

    On your dash a little picture of a wrench will show up when it’s time for maintenance. This is called a maintenance minder. Letters and numbers will appear indicating which maintenance is due. For example B 23 means it’s time for an oil/filter change - air filter / change transmission fluid The letter A or B will appear followed by numbers 1 through 7 (in the US) 1-9 in Canada. A- replace oil B - replace oil and filter 1- rotate tires 2- air filter 3- replace transmission fluid 4 spark plugs - valve adjustment 5 - replace engine coolant 6 - replace rear differential fluid 7 - replace brake fluid If you have the service records you can just stick with the maintenance minder schedule or you can change fluids more often if you want (I would) If you don’t have the service records - you won’t know when the maintenance was done last. So if you just bought the car that’s a good time to go ahead and start getting the fluids changed now. Always use the OEM fluids. Note: the owners manual points out that if you’re towing or carrying heavy loads- to change the trans fluid every 25,000 miles. If I were you I’d just change it every 25,000 miles just to be safe. Summary: Go by the maintenance minder at minimum. If it were my car and I wanted to maximize my chances of getting to 200,000 miles (nothing is guaranteed) and beyond… I’d do the following: Drain and fill engine oil every 2500 miles Change oil and filter every 5,000 miles Use OEM filter from the dealership (don’t buy online). Use Mobile 1 full synthetic extended performance oil. Change coolant, trans and diff fluid every 25,000 miles (OEM fluid only) Follow the maintenance minder for everything else ie valve adjustments air filter spark plugs etc Use quality gasoline Avoid a bunch of short trips Drive it nice and gently Have it inspected by a mechanic every so often to make sure everything else is good. Should be fine 👍

    Some people don’t like the feel of the cvt transmission because it doesn’t have different gears like a regular transmission. But I don’t think it’s “bad” …. as in it breaks constantly. The cvt in many year modern Nissans I would consider “ bad” because it does break a lot. However the Honda cvt transmission does need to be driven normally and given the proper maintenance. When shopping for a Honda with a cvt just make sure to try and screen the previous owner and try and make sure they have gotten the fluid changed… and it should be fine. No transmission last forever tho… In my opinion it’s basically a wear item.

    Hi MJ - thank you for your elaborated video. The quality of your editing, and information provided has inclined me to the subscription to your channel. I know you're probably too busy to respond to each and every user's comment, but - if you don/t mind, what would be your thoughts on a 2.0 petrol engine, i-VTEC, around year 2016-2017? I'm considering a purchase of an used car, with only 15 000 miles on it (if the data provided are true). The car would be primarily used for day to day city errands (kids, school, activities, etc. ... basically short distances driving), including a lot of starting and stopping of the engine.) Would you say it's an ok choice of a car for such role? My other cherry picks are 2018 Kia Sportage and 2018-2020 BMW 220i Active tourer. Thank you in advance for your time, consideration and reply. Greets from Europe.

    @@Segundo_Grande Thank you for subscribing 👍 Actually, we don’t get the 2.0 liter in the US for the CRV. So - I tried to do some research on this engine. It looks like it’s the R20A6 or R20A9. This looks like a slightly larger version of the Civic 1.8 liter engines we have in the US. The 1.8 liter is a great engine IMO - It has a timing chain (good) and is not direct injected (good) there’s a Civic that made it to 1 million miles with that engine… So I’m thinking the 2.0 liter version of it is most likely also very good. To put it in a CRV, which is bigger than a Civic…. It’s not gonna feel very sporty as compared to a BMW… But as long as you’re not towing it would be fast enough for me 🤷‍♂️ If you test drive it, and it feels good to you then go for it. Anyways- To answer your question - I would get the CRV. The BMW may be more fun to drive, but it also cost more to maintain. They are known to leak as they age…. Very expensive leaks (not good) The Kia will most likely not be as reliable. Google KIA Sportage common problems. The first things that pop up are engine and transmission. (Not good) So yeah I’d get the Honda CRV… But on my channel, before buying any used car… we do something called Automotive Nerd Research… In the US we have this thing called Carfax… That’s a service that list the history of a vehicle.. accidents.. maintenance history (so important) … odometer history etc.. Do you have something like this in Europe ? If so, use it ! Also have a car checked out by a mechanic BEFORE you buy it. In the US we have some people that do mobile mechanic business. These mechanics will come to your house to fix a car. They will also go to check out used cars, at the used car lots. So if people do this in Europe… Definitely hire one to have a look at the vehicle. It doesn’t have to be perfect… but you want to avoid getting scammed. In the US used car lots will sell you cars that have been in major accidents, are super rusted or need MAJOR repairs. A trained mechanic can help you avoid being ripped off. But they must inspect the car Before you buy it. Hope that helps 👍 MJ100k

    Unless you live somewhere that gets a TON of snow… I’d take the fwd. They are cheaper to buy used and some repairs are cheaper. For example: you never have to change your rear differential fluid.. because you don’t have one lol You never have to replace your driveshaft… If you ever have to replace your trans.. it’s faster because you don’t have to disconnect any of that stuff. If you know how to drive and get some good snow tires, you’ll be fine in the snow with fwd. It’s rwd that’s hard to drive in the snow. But even with rwd you can just add a bunch of weight in the trunk.

Only if I want to do donuts. But up in the convo did you mean two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive? I'm guessing you may have two wheel but I wanted to make sure. My concern was I'm looking to get one and I have a Honda Civic and I'm in Florida. I plan on doing a lot of camping and hiking, and what I found out very quickly is the Civic cannot go down so many of these roads that you would expect a car to be able to go down. But that's because it's too much sand...... So that's a problem for me. And I've been a little skeptical on the capability of some of these subcompacts so when I saw that it was only two wheel I was declining it at first. But after more research it seems that might be more appropriate for me actually. As I'm not looking to do any major off-roading. Like Like I'll hit some beginner trials or something maybe. But that's not the worry, the worry is simply getting bogged down and sand out in the middle of nowhere 100° heat.... So I think with the extra lift, it probably won't be that bad and I feel that it would be easy to get on stuck with a few tools..... So I'm not so opposed to it now. And thank you for your input, that's pretty important information for me actually. As I know it's much easier to take care of a two-wheel drive then an all wheel. And I also heard that you may have to buy all four tires at the same time which is a big problem for me. I don't have money to do that right now.. to have one tire go bad and need to replace all four. But I don't know that that's legit info or just somebody's opinion. Thank you for yours. I appreciate it....

    @@Vshamann336 I see.. Sorry I assumed you were talking about snow when you asked about fwd (2 wheel drive) vs 4wd. Actually I don’t know much about going off road except that I don’t like doing it lol The idea of getting stuck in the sand or mud miles away from an actual road sounds absolutely terrible to me. 😆 My friends like doing that kind of thing and I’m sure they would recommend getting something that’s meant to go off road with and not any type of CRV. I wouldn’t want to go off road in a fwd or 4wd CRV personally… if I HAD to go off road. If I had to go off road I’d get a Toyota Tacoma or some type of Jeep.

    @@MJ100k It's more easily described as it needs to be a beach cruiser I think. These roads are your typical off-roads. It's just that they get very sandy very quickly. Which is a problem for many cars. And my problem is that I need something good on gas at the same time. Hence the reason for going towards a CRV RAV4 or Subaru outback or Forester. Personally, I would gravitate towards the Subarus but I don't need very heavy off-road so after a lot of research the two-wheel might be okay for what I need it for. With just that extra clearance. Right now I have a civic and it gets stuck in the sand. Absolutely instantly just driving to the beach. It's really f****** annoying.... Now I won't just be driving to the beach, but those roads are all that much worse not unless it's been a heavy rain, but I wouldn't go out in that to begin with. Not unless I had a swamp buggy.lol thanks for the advice. See right now I have a Civic that I need to trade in, as the engine is stuttering on me and I don't know what's going on and I do not have money to fix it. So I might be looking at needing to trade it in. But of course nobody wants to give me a real deal without tying me into a new car. Just f****** ridiculous. Wouldn't finance a car that was 2 years older than the RAV4 I was looking at the day before. Because it was older. Claimed it was the banks. Yeah right. Banks will do anything for a quarter percentage so....lol definitely wasn't the banks. It was them not being able to make enough. But the other thing is that these places in Florida you get pretty far out there pretty quickly. Because it's very rough country for developing. So it's not like other places where there's twisting roads going off into the countryside. Certainly not like the hills of New York that I'm used to. Nowhere near as beautiful. In Florida is very beautiful but more along the coastline and beaches for the most part. Doesn't even compare to the New York countryside. But anyways thanks for your advice. I appreciate it...

    You have to look at things in perspective. These are 17- 13 year old vehicles you’re looking at. Vehicles are tested at the OEM generally for 100,000 miles… The original warranty ran out YEARS ago lol Every vehicle I’ve done a used car review on has common problems. I’ve done videos on the Ford Edge and Toyota Rav 4 and they have common problems too. It’s the internet age and every common problem for every car is talked about online. In addition to common problems we have problems just with parts getting old and wearing out🤷‍♂️ For my favorite vehicles I look at the strength of the engine and transmission. These would be your most expensive bills if they fail. Every other problem - I’ll look out for when I do my used car inspection … I’ll try and see if the previous owner did the repair when I examine the car fax service records. If stuff breaks on a used car (and it will) I’ll deal with it. I’m just hoping the engine or trans stays good. The main thing will be to find the year and model you want - that has a powertrain with a good reputation - and then try and screen the previous owner - also get it inspected before you buy it by a mechanic. Don’t expect perfection from the inspection just try and avoid disasters like excessive rust, accidents, shoddy repairs, slipping trans etc. Watch this video for help with screening the previous owner: good luck 👍 I can answer further questions if you have any: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p3V4rI-fY5zWpqg.htmlsi=rbyIV73OQPSb5FCQ

    @@MJ100k Thanks for responding and Yes, I've watched and took notes off of several of your videos. I'm just trying to narrow down and buy a car for $10,000 or less. $10,000 is the max. I was only stating that it seems to be conflicting reviews/experiences. However, I appreciate your videos/time for helping us. Also, a lot of us DON'T have a mechanic to go with us to check out a vehicle BEFORE purchasing one. Lastly, my experience has been that MOST sellers don't allow potential buyers enough time to take the car to a dealership/to be check out, before purchasing it. I've had bad experiences thus far. Wish me luck 🤞🏼🙏🏼🤞🏼

    @@TeeWright983 If you want to find a mechanic that will check out a used car before you buy it …. Go to Craigslist … services …. Automotive … then enter the search term “Mobile mechanic” There are a lot of mobile mechanics out there. Trust me - mechanics love to do used car inspections. It’s a chance to really use our skills to help someone. The mechanic can meet you at the used car lot. If a car lot won’t let a mechanic look at the car and test drive it. Don’t purchase it from them! The obviously have sometime to hide. If they don’t have a lift…. The mechanic can bring those little plastic ramps and drive the car up on those to look underneath. This is what you do-- once the mechanic finds a couple things wrong (and he will) if they are small to moderate problems use those problems as leverage to negotiate the price of the car down some. Make sure to bring your own money or get approved from your bank before you go shopping. Let’s say - if they wanted 10,000$ … once the mechanic inspects the car 99% of the time he’ll find at least a couple things that should be fixed… Then you say - we found xyz, problems. I’m willing to give you 9650$ for the vehicle right now - I’ll buy the car and fix the problems myself…. If not, thanks for your time, but I’ll keep shopping elsewhere. Keep a serious face. Don’t look too interested in the car but also don’t be a jerk. Also, be cool the whole time your in there. Many lots have cameras and microphones to hear you when they leave the room. They will most likely take your offer. I’ve done this exact procedure. This way you can use the savings to pay the mechanic and you’ll know what you need to fix immediately. If the mechanic finds something terrible like excessive rust, a slipping transmission or shoddy repairs from body damage. You’ll be out the inspection money…. But you wont waste your whole 10,000 on a piece of trash car! Trust me.. used car lots will sell you complete GARBAGE! Some of them will do the worst things to cars that you can imagine and smile in your face while doing it.
