What is the Best Sword? (Not as Simple as You'd Like)

Ойын-сауық

Still one of the most frequently asked questions on my channel. People are looking for the ultimate sword of perfection, superior to everything else... Which does not exist.
The same weapon may excel in one situation but be a major disadvantage in another. Two-handed greatsword in the jungle? Terrible idea. Gladius without shield in a one-on-one duel on an open field? Good luck. Katana without armor against archers? You get the idea.
So in this video I talk about some of the many factors that we have to consider when asking such a broad question. I also warn against over-stating the point that all swords were flawlessly design to be 100% efficient at their intended purpose in a given culture and time period. Humans aren't perfect, and their creations aren't either.

Just a quick thing, Skal. It's really obvious that you're loving where you live now and that's coming through in your videos. The funny intros, the sheer energy and enthusiasm that I've seen in your videos since the move has really been amazing to watch. As to "the best" topics. I think it happens mostly because people tend to want things to be simple/easy and asking what the best sword is, is almost akin to asking what the best guitar is. I think the deeper mentality is either "well if I have the best sword then I can practice with that and not have to focus on anything else" or, "I have this specific situation/concept I'm really thinking about but don't know how to word it." You see this never more obvious than when someone is trying to learn poker at a professional level. The questions are almost entirely based around wanting definitive direction on what to do in general situations and the 'real' answer is almost always "it depends." BUT...I can absolutely understand why you'd get annoyed at getting asked the question.

  • @SEDVTEDzzz

Wow the guitar analogy is the perfect mirror scenario to this, I used to obsess myself with finding the "perfect" guitar that fit with any situation. First I thought it was a Strat, then a Les Paul, then an SG, so on. I feel like human beings have a natural disposition to crave a tool for their field of work that is the perfect culmination of all things that are desired in that tool, the ultimate utilitarian object that does not require thought to be put into its use. But that's where the beauty of swords and guitars and things of that nature lie, in their differences and uniqueness. Regarding wanting to have one object to suit all your needs, I feel that it is better to just choose the object you have the most affinity with and master that completely, rather than being a jack-of-all trades, master of none. I settled on a Strat, and because I have worked around its quirks and embraced where its strengths lie while working around its weaknesses, I have my own sound and style different from anyone else.

@@SEDVTEDzzz totally agree on all of you. If you are asking for "the best" of anything, an honest answer will always be subjective. But i think the reason why people ask that is because they want to know what YOU think, Skall, at least some of them are interested in your specific taste and oppinion, why would they otherwise watch your videos?

@@SEDVTEDzzz To delve deeper into the guitar analogy, it's also how people try to find the "best" pickups when that's definitely more about the preference of music or the player's ear. A utilitarian tool makes sense for a number of different reasons. Humans also have an innate understanding of our own mortality/limited life-span and can get caught up worrying over wasting time learning how to use tools that we then ultimately don't like/aren't suited for the job at hand.

@Tatsuki Shine I'm obviously not Skall but I love your question. I'm gonna say the samurai chooses a falchion or saber. The knight is more difficult. I'd say he/she would go for a Nodachi they are much longer than regular katanas and I think they tend to be less drastically curved.

@@kylarvolke I'm going to disagree here and suggest the Samurai would choose a longbow, if he can re-train his archery skills. Samurai relied heavily on their bows. Otherwise, probably a spear or other non-sword weapon. If he had to swap to a sword, I think the bastard sword would be easiest to learn, biomechanically. Both a falchion and a sabre are one-handed swords with quite different techniques to the two-handed katana. I think most of the combat styles from kenjutsu could be applicable with a two-handed weapon - with some adaptations of course!

Hello, I am a Japanese, English is not good. So we use machine translation. I'm sorry if something is wrong. Double-edged swords are rare in Japan. It is called "moroha dukuri" or "kogarasu dukuri". In ancient Japan, it was invented during the transition from straight swords to curved swords. The sword had to be bent to make it easier to slash on horses. If the horse is moving, you can slash with almost no movement of your hand. "notati" is originally a katana used on horses and is not suitable for walking. As a result, it quickly became obsolete. However, those who wanted to show off their power sometimes dared to use it. Large swords like notati are difficult to handle on foot, so we decided to lengthen the handle. And that is "nagamaki". In the Middle Ages, katana is shorter than tati, and its curvature becomes smaller. Shorter ones are better for walking. And because of the development of armor, slashing has become less effective. However, swords are rarely used when wearing armor. I mainly fight with spears. Spears are primarily used to strike. If you get close enough, you do "kumiuti" and pierce with the short katana "yoroi doosi". * "Kumiuti" is a close martial art. So when you use katana it is an emergency and you need to pull it out quickly. It is probable that those factors reduced the curvature. Katana with both blades was sometimes made in the Middle Ages, but most are short katana. Probably to damage the neck quickly. After the armor has developed Swords of normal length are sometimes said to have been used to decapitate killed enemies rather than fight. The notati you have has almost no curvature. Notati usually curves near the hand for easier handling on horseback. If that katana had been used on foot, I think that it was used when not wearing armor after the 17th century. In the comments section of a different youtube video, I will write below what I commented on in the medieval Japanese battle on whether the spear or katana was used. I'm glad if you can use it as a reference. All of your other videos are fun and educational. Thank you very much.

    * This comment was made during the discussion between Katana and Spear in the battle. Wow! I am Japanese. I'm very happy to talk about Samurai eagerly. There has been a long debate as to whether the sword was used in combat, The answer is quite different in the early and late Middle Ages. It will be a little lesson on history, but please forgive The samurai discussed in countries other than Japan existed from the late ancient times to the Middle Ages. Late ancient samurai existed as a hierarchy following nobility. "Samurai" has the meaning of "follow" in ancient Japanese. It is a rough expression because it is difficult to explain if it is not Japanese. The early samurai were groups of powerful peasants armed dominating many other peasants. By paying taxes to lower aristocrats, they gained protection from the aristocrats and, depending on their achievements, were given new land. Samurai at this time were armed with bows and large Japanese swords, "Tachi". "Tachi" is long and warped to make it easier to cut enemies on horseback. The armor of this era is similar to the late medieval armor, but with less protection and was heavily damaged by katana. In the battle, you ride a horse, shoot each other's bows, and then slash with “Tachi”. Then drop the enemy off the horse. If the opponent is alive, play “Kumiuchi” and kill the opponent with a short Katana “yoroi doosi”. "Kumiuchi" is a martial art that fights at close range. I was doing sumo wrestling as a training for Kumiuchi. Now, before we talk about the late medieval samurai, let's learn about the ranks of soldiers. Do you know "busi"? busi is divided into samurai, kati and asigaru. The late medieval samurai has less meaning as a ruling class, and only high-class soldiers who are qualified to mount are called samurai. Serve as an officer onthe battlefield. "kati" is not allowed to be mounted on a horse. However, it is a good status class to some extent. Serves as a non-commissioned officer on the battlefield. "asigaru" is a lower class busi. They are not allowed to meet the master. "asigaru" serves the master and is a semi-farmer. They are trained and deal with bows and guns. However, due to their similar role on the battlefield, mercenaries often seem to be called asigaru. In the battle, a squad called "sonae" is formed for each lord. Some of the sonae are Ashigaru, who have roles such as spears, bows, and guns. The lower commander called "kumigasira" commands the squads divided by weapons. The lords "busyou" will give instructions to "kumigasira". And in the battle, the general gives instructions to the Lord and moves the sonae to fight. When you engage an enemy sonae, you place a fixed shield and shoot with a bow. If the formation collapses, chase with a spear. The spear is about 4 meters and is used by hitting it from above instead of stabbing it. Japanese spears, unlike Salissa, are wrapped with thin bamboo on the outside of the wood. Therefore it is elastic. Depending on its length, it is quite destructive and can be damaged well with armor. Also, it seems that a cloth was wrapped around a part of the handle so that the hand did not slip with blood. The front row soldier's spear appears to have used a long spear about 5-6 meters to break the fixed shield. And when it is close enough that you can not hit with a spear, you kill with kumiuchi and yoroi doosi. It seems that the riding samurai used a spear of about 2 to 3 meters. In battles, bow casualties seemed to be the highest. So what was katana (utigatana) used for? Japan had a culture of beheading when killing an important enemy, There is a theory that it was used to cut the neck after defeating the enemy. Head hunting! Hahaha! If it was not a field battle, it might have been used more. When the general of the Muromachi shogunate was assassinated, he stabbed several swords into the tatami mats and cut down on the approaching enemies. ...... This fake story is popular! Oh, the story was too long. Cheers to your patience. And I am not good at writing interesting sentences. If you're curious, don't think I'm all right, check out Japanese history. I had a hard time writing this sentence so please be kind. I do machine translation because I can't speak English. I'm sorry if there is something strange. Thank you.

@@rinrinzemi Very interesting. I've learned a little on this topic before, and what you say makes sense to me. A katana was a sidearm, used primarily when attacked outside of battle (such as when in public or at home), or when disarmed or in very close range. It is the same way with knightly swords, such as the longsword and arming sword, and it is also how we use handguns today. It is not practical to sleep with a polearm or rifle and take it with you when you are shopping! I have also heard that it may have been used for decapitation of corpses. Also, I believe is usually written "chi", and not as "ti". Similarly, is written as "shi", and not as "si". They were sometimes transcribed that way in the past, but not anymore. Writing it that way may confuse some who are not knowledgeable on the Japanese language. Romanization can be difficult, and I respect your good effort. I only know a few Japanese words. I have not practiced speaking Japanese very much. I am sorry we cannot communicate better. I attempt to communicate as clearly as possible. You can ask for clarification if you do not understand me. For Japanese, both have the same pronunciation, so both are correct, In private conversations, we tend to use the one that takes less time to type. We apologize for using the confusing words.

@04:25 I am a Dark and Middle age battle reenactor based in the south west of England. We did some work with an archaeological team a few years ago who wanted to back-up a theory they had about Swords. Virtually no Swords are found at historical British battle sites. It's mainly Spear and Axe heads. Most of the swords found in archaeological digs are found in graves, tombs and Barrows. Many of the skulls found near the skeletons on historical battle sites have holes in them consistent with Warhammers and Axes. Against Leather, Chain and Plate armour on a dummy, only long, sharp, pointy swords really did any significant penetrating damage and that damage was only from thrusting. Poleaxes, Spears and War hammers were very effective at piercing all armour types. Out of all the weapons the War hammer was the most reliable, consistent, light and nimble. A War Hammer can pierce a metal helmet killing the wearer instantly. We spent many hours talking this through and if you put your mind into that of a Medieval soldier, faced with potentially thousands of enemy soldiers in armour, possibly with shields, coming at you to smash you to death, you're going to want something that gets the job done, kills the enemy quickly and efficiently. We concluded that a sword would most definitely not be the first choice. As much as I love swords, I think in this period their use was limited on the battlefield. They were more of a symbol of power, status and authority.

Hi, great video. Food for thought. The knuckle guard is intended to allow for better wrist alignment so that you don't place as much stress on your wrist when stabbing and gain greater reach going it instead of cutting. I was told the ring guard and the ricasso were developed by Portuguese and Spanish because they so often lost index fingers while placing them in front of the cross guard for stabbing with more efficiency. Those swords came about as my ancestors found the maritime route to India. They were used against many different weapons with a great degree of success. Specially against cutting curved swords which didn't allow for such reach alignment, as it happens with medieval straight swords. I love any kind of sword and, as you mentioned, it depends on context. Without knowing the context I would probably go for a one and a half as well... Although rapiers are great for targeting small targets like armour gaps, hand and feet admit was used in duels but many time in battle as well. But cutting weapons have some apparent advantage in battle, still a sword that allows cutting and stabbing (30%/70%) without the need for half swording, like the transitional sword you showed in the foto (I think from the XVI scentury) had great results against dedicated cutting swords. Specially with cross for really short distances... Uff... Hard choice without context. There is a great book of real stories from the adventures of Portuguese in the time of the Descobrimentos called "Homens, Armas e Tomates" which might make you like rapiers and their immediate ancestors, the Descobrimentos sword, a bit more. As for small swords... Well, I've used them in many occasions. They are great for duelling and for self defence in the context of their time. Noblemen found it uncomfortable and not fashionable wearing such long swords as the rapier and slowly switched for what we in Portugal call espadim de corte, ir just espadim. A small sword dedicated to stabbing, estocada. This also explains the development of those swords with a straight blade but a guard like a sabre, spadroon I think you call it in English, you mentioned one. Not the best sword for cutting or stabbing, a compromise between the was needs and the previous training officers, usually noblemen had with some sort of sword. Or you can just use a montante! 😁

Swords are like tools. Each tool has a specific functionality, and just like a master artisan achieves mastery over his craft, just like that he gains mastery over his tools, however it was not the hammer that made him good at his job. What I am trying to say is that, a sword is only as good as its wielder. Now there is no such thing as a multipurpose sword that can function as a katana, longsword, rapier etc. In the video he states fashion and practicality, which are both correct as terms although I would have preferred the term culture instead of fashion. For the japanese for instance, war had some spiritual elements as well, which derived from their culture and viewpoint. Each civilization due to individual differences developed differently, and the same applies for their martial techniques. The Greeks for instance favored mostly the spear and shield as well as tight formations called phalanxes. Their way of fighting was reflected on their weapons naturally, you need the proper tool for the job! The gladius of the Roman soldiers, (they also had the Pillum, a form of javelin) again ideal for crowded battles. Now the katanas were not very useful in large battles and generally they preferred spears (like the Naginatas), they were easier to use against armored opponents and much harder to dodge or even parry. Now duels are very different and once again a number of multipe factors need to be taken into account, single hand blades like the one that is displayed here, are actually pretty good, you hav emuch better control over it, it is less taxing on your wrist, and you can outmaneuver and outfight most heavy type of opponents. Now I have to object on the longsword that the gentleman introduces here. I find it quite big to be a longsword, the single handed blade you used here sure looks more like a longsword, the double-edged blade that at least half the hilt was exposed for the most part is essentially a bastard sword, using it with only one hand takes much out of its potential, it is apparent that it was made for two hands, sure you might use it one handed for some swift parries or attacks, but the true damage and control comes from both hands. Generally I am with you in the longsword department, they are still usable as two handed, they are highly verstatile, weather to thrust or swing, and if it comes down to it, you may take up a shield, and also since they are very common, a trained swordsman wouldn't find it hard to either find a replacement, or take a category heavier weapon like the bastard sword or Claymore.

You are mistaken regarding the size of a longsword. That looks on the smaller side of longswords tbh. Shadiversity has a great video on blade/hilt lengths and how they are classified. If I remember correctly, longswords are strictly 2 handed swords, not hand and a half or one handed.

I also have different preferences for different environments/situations, and it’s definitely a subject that requires nuance.
