Like, Hot Rats isn't just another "underrated classic" type of record but the opening track itself alone anticipated the 80s-90s (and 2000s to a certain extent) music trend of incorporating very intricate harmony progression and lush arrangements into big pop hits, as early as 1969. I don't remember finding any other late 60s popular records that really match the harmonic and production sophistication of "Peaches en Regalia" to begin with.

Shut up man, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" by Kanye West, often heralded for its innovation in hip-hop, may seem an unlikely candidate for the title of the best rock album ever. However, a closer examination of the album reveals a sonic tapestry and thematic depth that aligns with the core principles of rock music. Clocking in at 1000 words is a challenge, but let's embark on this journey to unravel the reasons why "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" deserves recognition as a groundbreaking and unparalleled work in the realm of rock. At its core, rock music has always been about pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and crafting a narrative that reflects the zeitgeist of its time. "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" does precisely that. Kanye West, known for his genre-defying approach, seamlessly blends elements of rock, hip-hop, and soul to create a sonic landscape that transcends conventional categorizations. The album opens with the haunting sounds of Nicki Minaj in "Dark Fantasy," immediately setting a tone that is both grandiose and introspective. This juxtaposition is a hallmark of rock, a genre that thrives on the duality of light and dark, loud and soft. One of the defining features of great rock albums is the ability to tell a compelling story, and "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is a narrative masterpiece. Each track contributes to the overarching theme of Kanye's internal struggles, societal critique, and the pursuit of artistic perfection. Take, for example, "Power," where Kanye grapples with the intoxicating nature of fame and the pitfalls that come with it. The pulsating beat, aggressive guitars, and the defiant lyrics echo the rebellious spirit that defines rock anthems. It's a track that not only showcases Kanye's lyrical prowess but also borrows heavily from the rock ethos of speaking truth to power. Furthermore, the album's collaborations with rock legends such as Bon Iver and Mike Dean demonstrate Kanye's deliberate effort to bridge the gap between hip-hop and rock. "Monster," featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, and Bon Iver, is a prime example. The haunting vocals of Bon Iver set against the raw verses of Nicki Minaj create a sonic clash that mirrors the eclecticism of rock collaborations. The result is a track that defies genre constraints, embodying the rebellious spirit inherent in the best rock collaborations. A critical aspect of the rock genre is the emphasis on artistic expression and experimentation. "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" stands as a testament to Kanye West's willingness to push the boundaries of sound and production. The track "Runaway" is a sonic odyssey, spanning nearly ten minutes, and serves as an experimental playground where Kanye explores the intersections of hip-hop and rock. The use of the vocoder, the haunting piano melody, and the gradual build-up of intensity all echo the experimental ethos that has defined some of the greatest rock compositions. Moreover, rock music has often been a platform for social commentary and critique. From Bob Dylan's protest songs to Rage Against the Machine's politically charged anthems, rock has been a vehicle for artists to engage with societal issues. In "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," Kanye West takes up this mantle with tracks like "Gorgeous" and "All of the Lights." "Gorgeous" confronts issues of racism and systemic injustice, drawing parallels to the socially conscious rock anthems of the past. The orchestral arrangement in "All of the Lights" creates a sense of urgency and chaos, mirroring the tumultuous state of society that rock has historically sought to address. In conclusion, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" may not fit neatly into the traditional rock canon, but its spirit, innovation, and thematic richness align seamlessly with the core principles of the genre. Kanye West, a visionary in his own right, has crafted an album that defies categorization and challenges the status quo, much like the greatest rock albums in history. From its narrative depth to its sonic experimentation, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" stands as a testament to the enduring power of rock music and deserves its place among the pantheon of the best rock albums ever created.
