for the limited time I've used the Derwent charcoal pencils, I've found that while sharpening (with a razor) they tend to brake, very, very easily, especially the Dark ones, Medium and Light are better but still tend to brake, you also have to be quite careful while getting a sharp tip using sand paper. I haven't got much of a alternative here in Croatia, so I stick to them, but sharpening is a real pain and quite frustrating, since you are losing quite a bit of the pencil when it brakes. that being said, when they aren't braking, they are pretty nice to use!

I haven’t drawn in a long time but want to get back to it. This was very helpful!! I always used Generals so I’m glad to see it rated highly!

Regarding the Derwent’s I’d say they are the most natural charcoal like. And as for natural charcoal a more textured paper is best. Also, they don’t come in different degrees of hardnesses. But in different shades of black-grey. I find the dark one great for adding details when used together with vine (usually Grumbacher or Nitram) and willow (usually Daler-Rowney) natural charcoals on Ingres textured (Fabriano) paper. It preserves the “natural charcoal” look, while most other charcoal pencils produce a bit too black and too sharp lines. But on regular cold- or hot pressed drawing paper I suppose they-in the same way as natural charcoals applied on such surfaces-don’t accomplish much.

@@EceGurlerArt How do you sharpen these pencils, by the way? Whenever I try that with the crap ones I have, they don't sharpen and just break away. I don't get a sharp enough point to make the drawing gain that proper dimension. I haven't bought generals one yet, but do they have such pencils? Any information in this regard would be appreciated.

@@coolshah1662 Hi! Sure happy to share what I know. First of, generals pencils are pretty sturdy so I am sure they won't break easily. Second, I use this type of office sharpener: amzn.to/3Kaw2UU Since the pencil is fixed, it is less likely to break. You don't have to buy this brand I just showed an example.

Going to play Devil’s Advocate here because I’m a secondary school teacher and have tried a lot of charcoal. I will tell you that the brand name really doesn’t matter. What matters is the grade- B, HB etc and your hands- or touch, feel, sensitivity etc. you can spend as much as you want on charcoal but if you don’t understand how to create tonal structures and form in light FIRST then you are wasting your money.
