What is the Avant-Garde? Art Movements & Styles

The 'avant-garde' is often used to describe something new or cutting-edge in art but where did the term come from and what does it mean?
Who are the avant-garde and what did they do to become to be known as such?
Emerging in the mid-19th century, the avant-garde received their name for their fighting spirit. Avant-garde is French for ‘vanguard’; a military term used to describe the front-line of an army moving into battle. Artists were compared with these soldiers, as they were often a group force, challenging long-established concepts and ideas about art and fighting an entrenched establishment.
The early avante-garde artists such as Courbet, Gauguin and Kirchner were regarded with great hostility, because they pushed accepted boundaries. As these establishments denied the work public exposure, the avant-garde fought this censorship of their art.

    Avant garde today is best illustrated in the novel "Confessions of a Flash Artist" in which what was traditionally frowned upon is elevated into an art form.

    Avant garde in music means sound used to create emotion most of the time. Usually lacks structure and the sound and atmosphere tell more than the lyrics. Bjork and Julia holter are my favorites.

    @@PeachPlastic they look the same at the end but the feeling that inspired them is the diference. avant garde like in this video is a challenge to standards and to the classic, surrealist is pretty self explanatory with the objective of representing something that would challenge our reality, postmodernisim challenges logic and reason, but for dada i dont have alot of expirience but it seems like a combination of all before with an intent to insult or make fun of concepts. (english is not my first language sorry but i hope that whoever reads this can understand you dont have to like this type of art and liking it is not proof of superiority over others art is subjective and you can love and appreciate whatever you like dont hate on others for their tastes and be mindful that not everyone has the same likes so use headphones when hearing music and apreciate art in private)

  • @blueeberrie4396

    @blueeberrie4396

    I would say yes. In fact one of the leading heads of futuristic (i think) movement wrote a statement (which helped to define futurism) where he mentioned his idea of futuristic woman decribed as open minded, clever, independent and just pretty much not so ,,lady“ like for that time. He also raised his doughter that way. So we could speculate that avantgarde brought the idea that helped to define feminism. Maybe the reason your profesor couldn't explain it to you is simply becouse it was only her opinion without any actual evidence. I am only not sure if it was specifically futurism or a different movement of that time. I think the artist mentioned it in his book called Supermatismus but that does not fit due to it being not futuristic. So I would recommend you to make a little research if you want to have more correct informations.
