What Is Thaipusam? | NANDINI SAYS

Thaipusam 2020 is tomorrow!
Which means it's that time of the year when questions like these pop up:
- Why Indians cucuk their bodies lah? Not pain meh? 😱
- It's the Indian new year ah?
- What is that pot people carry?
Don't worry, I've got all the answers! 😄
Happy Thaipusam!

Question by one of our Malay friend : Why most of them wear yellow attire during thaipusam? Answer: Yellow is auspicious and also people used to soak white clothes in turmeric before wearing it to festivals like this. It acts as antibacterial agent. And if you notice your Hindu neighbors, they will hang up a string of mango leaves with turmeric and kumkum powder mixed with water and shaped like a dot. Serves similar function. Even when we want to do pongal celebration Infront our house , we will wash the area with water mixed with turmeric.

Well another reason why the are piercings is because of bravery. The deed is called alagu kutruthal. Alagu rhymes with the word azhagu which means beauty. Tamils are warriors and they shouldnt be afraid of pain. So the beauty of a warrior is to bear the pain happily and without fear. So the piercing of alagu happens in order to prepare a warrior so that he's not afraid of pain.

@@hhheidi1121 Take a look at all the Thaipussam media available. Almost always every picture and video comes from Malaysia or Singapore, Never India itself. I don't live in either India or Malaysia, but I have had hundreds of acquaintances from India. Punjabi (Hindu ones) Gujuratis, Bengali, and Telugus from India most of them have never even heard of Thaipussam. I've been to India as well, the concept doesn't really exist and is pretty much only known to a limited portion of Tamil Nadu. "Muruga" isn't really worshipped widely outside of ethnic Tamils so that also contributes.

Elisa Hanim , (no disrespects meant ), if you ask any hindus , what hinduism is , and , is there a beginning and an end to it ; I think 99 per cent won 't be able to give a plausible answer and the 1 per cent who do , would just take you to the far reaches of the cosmos and , when back would have excused themselves and made themseles scarce . To my own limited knowledge , the devotees (followers) know that the painted statues isn 't god , but are attributes of the divine we experience in Nature . They know that there is only one Divine force and what you see in temples are the myriad expressions of the divine and its mystery , moulded by human thought through thousands of years of their culture , traditions , philosophies and way of life , of the peoples of these ancient lands . These are descendents of a people of a very monumental ancient civilization which has contributed much by way of language , science and mathematics . And as such one can 't call hinduism a religion , but a way of the traditions of the old. There is no singular authority or any singular book ( there are thousands of ancient manuscripts and books ) . So , one can conclude ,it is not a organized believe system like the abrahamic religions of the west like islam , christianity and judaism . And so they express the joy of Creation and Mother Nature itself in colour and pomp , and honour life itself through myriad festivals and celebrations .........my story wiil go on until this space runs out . Anyway , I hope you get a small glimpse through my limited lens Elisa Hanim . Keep well and joyful . TQ

Kavadis is similar to Kavads (used in Northern parts of India for bringing Gangajal from Haridwar/Neelkanth/Gangotri in order to offer it to God Shiva especially on Shravan Shivratri )

Sorry baru tengok video ni. BTW Happy Thaipusam to all my Indian friends. Dulu masa kecik pernah datang Batu Caves dengan parents sebab parents nak kami tahu pasal budaya dan agama kaum India di Malaysia macam Ponggal, Thaipusam dan Deepavali. My parents terapkan benda ni sebab bila perkara melibatkan agama, memang sensitif. So, bila kita tahu semua tu, kita boleh elakkan. Paling seronok, my Indian friends bagi manisan Ladu eh yang bentuk bulah saiz bola golf tu? Lupa dah😅😅😅😅tapi sedapp😋

@@vijayaraja346 I am North Indian, as North Indian as they come, but I was born and brought up in Mumbai. I don't know what you are saying, but it seems like you dislike us. Adi Shankara was a great man, I do follow Advaita Vedanta. We also worship Murugan as Kartikeya at home. I am interested in knowing what's going on? I have many Tamilians as friends, but never felt any different. Though i do feel this Dravidian and "cowbelt" politics is kinda useless. Our genes are the same, our religion is the same. I really don't understand the fight. If anything I have seen north Indians always marvel at south Indians who seem to have retained the Hinduism and culture while we have lost its essence, we just superficially follow it. In fact, we kinda feel ashamed. That's why it comes out aggressively. : ( its has a lot to do with the north always fighting the invaders etc. BTW we have our own version, called kavadias. it's slightly different. kzread.info/dash/bejne/f6CGuK2af8-7iqw.html
