Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis" video that will inform the general public.
What Is Syphilis?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It can also be transmitted from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.
Syphilis has several stages, each with its own set of symptoms:
Primary stage: This is characterized by the appearance of a painless sore or ulcer at the site of infection, usually on the genitals, anus, or mouth. This sore is called a chancre. It typically appears about 3 weeks after exposure and can last for 3-6 weeks.
Secondary stage: If syphilis is not treated during the primary stage, it progresses to the secondary stage. This stage is characterized by a rash that can appear anywhere on the body, including the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Other symptoms may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, fatigue, and muscle aches. These symptoms may come and go over several months.
Latent stage: If syphilis is still not treated, it enters a latent stage where there are no visible symptoms. However, the bacteria remain in the body and can still be transmitted to others.
Tertiary stage: If syphilis is not treated for many years, it can progress to the tertiary stage. This stage can lead to serious health problems such as damage to the heart, brain, nerves, eyes, liver, bones, and joints. These complications can be life-threatening.
