What is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can infect both men and women and can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. In rare cases, it can also be transmitted from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.
Symptoms of gonorrhea can vary, and some people may not experience any symptoms at all. When present, symptoms may include:
For Men:
Pain or burning sensation when urinating
White, yellow, or green discharge from the penis
Pain or swelling in the testicles (in rare cases)
For Women:
Pain or burning sensation when urinating
Increased vaginal discharge
Vaginal bleeding between periods
For Both Men and Women:
Rectal infections can cause discomfort, discharge, or bleeding from the rectum
Throat infections can cause a sore throat
If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (in women), infertility, and an increased risk of contracting or spreading HIV.
Gonorrhea can be diagnosed through various tests, including urine samples, swabs from the infected area, or blood tests. It is important to get tested if you suspect you may have been exposed to gonorrhea.
