Shutter speed is an integral aspect of shooting any photo or video. Along with the other two camera settings that make up the exposure triangle, aperture, and ISO, shutter speed is something you need to understand. In this cinematography and photography tutorial, we will continue our Exposure Triangle series with a look at the pivotal role of the camera shutter. Included are topics on shutter speed, the difference between shutter angle vs shutter speed, motion blur, and how all of the effects of these settings are wanted or unwanted depending on your vision.
This is shutter speed explained.
The camera shutter is a moveable barrier that blocks light from hitting the camera’s sensor or film until the desired moment. As the film passes through, the shutter remains open for a specific amount of time, which is typically only fractions of a second. In both photography and cinematography, the role of shutter speed is two-fold: to regulate the amount of exposure to the light and the amount of motion blur. Along with frame rate, shutter speed can be decreased to allow more blurring in the image, or increased to eliminate motion blur altogether. To create cinematic video, for example, there is something called the 180 degree shutter rule, which states that the shutter speed should be double your frame rate. So, if you’re shooting 24fps, your shutter speed would be 1/48th of a second. This is because that’s what motion pictures have been using for decades and this ratio will give you the perfect level of motion blur needed for cinematic video.
We’ll also cover shutter angle vs shutter speed, which is a bit of a misnomer because they are really the same thing, just measured differently. Shutter speed is measured in time and shutter angle is measured in degrees, which is typically reserved for shooting video rather than photography.
Another common topic covered in this shutter speed tutorial is rolling shutter vs global shutter. The names for each type are a little misleading because this involves the camera’s sensor rather than the mechanical camera shutter. It is important to understand what type your camera has because it will determine how you should be capturing images.
When you’ve grasped shutter speed, motion blur, shutter angle, the 180 degree shutter rule, and similar camera settings, you’ll be that much closer to mastering the art of image-making.

    Explain about the camera Raw options, Difference between Log and Raw

  • @mjelves

    @mjelves

    3 жыл бұрын

    «Raw is not Log because Log is in a video format, and raw is not video. Raw data has no video processing baked in and has to be converted into video for viewing. Log is video and has things like white balance baked into it. They're very much not the same; however, they're both designed to get the most information out of the sensor. Raw is getting everything the sensor has to offer; likewise, Log curves are designed to get the most tonal range out of the sensor. While they're very different formats, they have the same general application. Both raw and Log can be uncompressed, but that depends on the recording device. These terms, and many others, have all become part of our vocabulary in this digital cinema world.» From Nofilmschool.com

    Motion blur is one of my favorite effects. Directors Ridely and Tony Scott are known for using motion blur or step printing effects in their movies. Of course they must have shot with a really low shutter speed in order to have achieved those cool motion blur scenes.

    Hi, I'm a focus puller and camera technician and want to clarify some thing you guys got wrong: Most cinema cameras do not use shutter speed they use shutter angle, so literally referring to shutter speed is useless in many ways. This is because in the early days of film cameras a pie like circle would move in front of the film stock to expose it. It rotated in a circle. So 180 degree is half of this "pie." Shutter is important for exposure but significantly more important for motion blur. This is a more useful way to control the motion blur instead of changing the frame rate. It's very often used to stop pulsating from many different lights that cameras will pick up. 180 degrees is the most common and for many films that rarely changes. The shutter is all digital in digital cameras and is referred to as a global or rolling shutter. A rolling shutter literally rolls down the sensor collecting data from each line of pixels right after the other. Global is when the entire sensor and all pixels collect data at the same time. Just a reminder that 24fps is 23.98 not 24. Many of the clips you chose to use as an example are not examples of different shutters but rather different frame rates.

    Wonderful. Thank you, as always. What does e.g. "less than 180 degrees" (e.g. 45 or 90 degree shutter angle) mean in digital age? That shutter speed is > 2x frame rate? So e.g. staccato effect would be shot at 1/60 and 24 fps, and also played back at 24 fps? Thank you.
