What is Shia Islam? | Syed Ali Imran

How did Shi'ism arise? What are the similarities and differences between Shi’i and Sunni Muslims? What are the sources of contention, and how can both sides overcome their distrust of each other? Host Dr. Safiyyah Ally speaks with Syed Ali Imran. Syed Ali is the religious superintendent at Al Haadi school in Toronto, an instructor at the Mizan Institute, and an author on IqraOnline.net. He studied in the seminary of Qom, Iran for nearly 10 years where he focused on theology, jurisprudence, legal theory, and philosophy.

Years ago I met an Iraqi brother who belongs to the Sunni school but hands out water to (mostly) Shi’i pilgrims walking between Najaf and Karbala. When I asked him about it, he smiled and said, “When you have love of Ahlulbayt in your heart, Sunni and Shi’a disappear.”

I am from a part of South India where there is almost no Shia Islam. I usually go to a Salafi Mosque where they normally despise and mention Shia Islam in a very poor manner. Once during Friday Sermon, it was mentioned Shia Islam was created as part of a Jewish conspiracy. (Hatred against all jews propagated is another matter to be discussed). I was taken back by the statement. I did my research and found differences exist (in rituals and practices few I may not agree with), but there is nothing of that sort it being a conspiracy. The fact that the Ahl al-Bayt - Hassan, Hussian and their families were brutally murdered by the forefathers of Salafi-Wahabis is always hidden on purpose by the wahhabi propaganda. Also found the Salafi-Wahhabism is funded by Saudi money in India which propagates hatred against other sects of Islam which itself is un-islamic.

What I don't understand about Shiism is that if it is legit then we should have a steady stream of writings dating back to Ali and back and forth dialogue between Sunni and Shia perspectives. But by this teacher's own admission, this sort of dialogue doesn't occur till the 4th century of Islam. It looks to me that the Ummayads introduced Muhammad to provide context for the inscrutable Quran. Then the Abbasids elevated Ali and wrote hadith about him to discredit the Umayyads. Next, the Fatimids elevated Ali even further to discredit the Abbasids and wrote their own hadith. No earlier Shia dialogue because they didn't even exist till the 4th century of Islam, after al Bukhari and all the Sunni hadith were composed.

I don't think any fair academic will deny this. Even sunni scholarship don't deny there was dispute over leadership. Who forbids the writing of hadith? You can't have it both ways whendunni Khalifah forbid writing of hadith when it would have been best time record but then say oh but there not much written sources earlier on. They forbid because they knew it would not look favourably on them taking power. Everyone understand those who run media control the narrative of the status quo. So remember who was in power they are hardly going to allow another narrative openly which goes against them ruling. What you don't seem to understand of Shia view is it doesn't matter if divine leadership hold political power or not. There doesn't need to be any debates especially when you would be persecuted for it. None of your argument makes sense because it is built on false premise that society then was like now. That there was freedom to debate. Also the word ahl sunnat jamah didn't exist and didn't come until far later. Unless like Shia which used in the time of the Prophet (sawa)

Used sympathy for what happened at Karbala to Prophet family to gather support for false pretence of getting justice but then laid their own stake to leadership. They couldn't promote Ali right as it would show they were wrong to take power. If you knew about Islamic history you would know of the discussions of Abbasid Khalifahs disputing the right of Ali against the Imams of the Shia. One famous one I think was Ma'moon asked Imam Redha what is evidence of Imam Ali Khalifat he said sura Mubahila. This was a great introductory video and provided space for the voice of Shi'ism in the space of dialogue. It was slightly unfortunate however that the discussion on Shi'ism here fell into the same pitfall as conversations about "Islam" (usually meaning "Sunni" Islam) as it was only used to refer to the largest branch of Shi'ism, namely "Twelver" or "Ithna'ashari" Shi'ism and entirely omitted mention of the 2nd and 3rd largest Shi'i communities, namely the Ismaili and Zaydi Shia. Even if the perspective and conversation remained as it was, it would have been better to mention the diversity in Shi'ism and then more accurate to highlight that this video would be from the Twelver Shi'i perspective. A good video nonetheless that will help to build bridges.

Thanks to let the Quran speak for doing this, as a sunni Muslim I’ve seen Sunnis never allow dialogue between themselves and Shias and often thought that was absolutely wrong to do as we aren’t allowing themselves to explain or engage in conversation. We are assuming and forming opinions without knowing, unlike what our religion teaches. I was fortunate enough to come from a family that didn’t shun Shias and were pretty open to them so I knew to respect them from a young age. Unfortunately not many can say the same.

Syed Ali Imran mentioned tensions started in the 17th century. In India, Shias were brutally persecuted by Sunni forces in the 16th century (especially Kashmir) and it continued for hundreds of years. But it starts much earlier, in the 14th century, and this is within India. Shia refugees were coming into India from outside too starting before. Persecution of Shias was rife in the Middle East and Afghanistan. I don't know why Syed sets this topic so late in history.

It makes more sense for people to choose a leader, than that title be given to someone just because they are related to the Prophet or to continue a lineage. Its not a kingdom, this is the Prophet, plus just because they are related doesnt mean he would be better etc. One who is more knowleadgable after the Prophet, its all about your abilities, your knowledge, character etc. I think people have the right to chose their leader. Look at all the kingdoms, how many kings, czars or sultans took over but were not fit to lead? This issue should be put to rest. People chose the leader, its over. Lets put our differences aside and forget that which doesnt matter anymore, we have to unite and be one Ummah, make our Prophet proud, do what he would love for us to do.

What I just cannot understand is why there aren't Shia writings dated back to Ali. What are the earliest Shia manuscripts that we have?

These Shi'as are Twelver, this Twelver shia sect was founded in the 10th century after the socalled disappeared of hidden Shi'a leader in Samarra, Iraq.

The earliest sunni Hadiths date back to around 160 AH, the earliest Shia Hadith is the Hadith of Sulaym Ibn Qays

@@haqqhaqq2716 Wow, I just looked it up and saw that Sulaym ibn Qays died in 714, and he is thought to have overlapped with Ali himself. If he wrote the hadith this would put his collection a full century before alBukhari. Do we have good manuscript evidence for his work or evidence of references or quotations from contemporaries or early authors?

You have to understand a few things here. One being, we believe our Imam’s (as) are the only source of true Prophetic Sunnah. Only traditions narrated by them can be relied upon to derive laws. And we have in our books narrations from them that say that combining prayers doesn’t decrease their reward in any way. The thing that is emphasised upon is praying the prayer in Awwal waqt, their prime time. We have traditions from our Imams (as) which say that the Prophet (pbuh) combined prayers even when there were no special circumstances. And when he was asked about it, He (pbuh) said that it is to make ease for my Ummah. You don’t have to agree or believe this, but I hope you can see and understand our practice a little better.
