What is Resistance/Impedance (Ohms) - Why electricians need to know it
Resistance is a very important element of an electrical circuit. As electricians we use the term impedance more than we use resistance, as impedance refers to AC circuits - whereas resistance refers to DC.

Resistance and Impedance are both methods of slowing down current enough for it to be usable. When current is unimpeded (meaning no resistance in it's way) it can create an immense amount of heat, which may melt the insulation off of the wires or cause the wires to start welding themselves together. This is a very dangerous and dramatic event when it does happen.
So putting a coil of wire in the middle of the circuit slows the current down to a usable level. Most appliances on electrical circuits operate because there is a coil of wire on the inside of them. When current leaves the source and travels into the appliance, it has to travel through instructors and capacitors on its way out of the appliance and back up to the source. In an AC circuit the direction alternates this happens 60 times per second. This works the same way in a standard DC circuit, except with the DC circuit there are resistors, so we call these circuits resistive circuits.
Impedance in an AC circuit has 2 parts that make it up. Inductive reactance and capacitive reactance. I will get more into these in a later video, but for now just understand that there is a definite relationship between a capacitor and and inductor in how they affect current in an AC circuit. An inductor and a capacitor act to cancel some of the effects of each other out if they are both introduced in a circuit. However if only one is in the circuit it will act opposite than the other one would. For example if an inductor is in the circuit, you would have an inductive circuit that would make the Voltage waveform lead the Current waveform. Conversely in a capacitive circuit, the opposite would occur - you'd have a Current waveform leading a Voltage waveform. More on this later.

The charge on a plate in a capacitor is not caused electrons repelling each other, it's caused by electrons building up on the negative plate and being attracted to the positive plate but not being able to jump the insulating gap between the two. Inductive reactance is caused by the expanding and collapsing magnetic field, which is caused by the fluctuating intensity and direction of current flow. When the lines of flux pass through the neighboring loops of wire in the coil, a voltage is induced that opposes the source voltage. Same concept as a shake flashlight. And also pretty much every part of our electrical infrastructure-

I haven't professionally worked in the trade since 2014. I graduated the apprenticeship in 2005. I wish you were one of my teachers, I guarantee I would have KNOWN not just memorized for the test. As I've decided to go back to the trade, I've been super nervous that I don't remember enough of the technical side. Your videos have provided the much needed refresher courses. And honestly, in a couple cases, you've explained a few things that I knew "how", but didn't know "why". Thank you so much creating a safe space for me to refresh 💜

You are doing a great job..... I think you are going to end up like your Master friend that left the field to be a teacher. I can tell you have a heart for teaching. A couple of things you missed or skipped over (1) one important factor that people don't really understand is the effect of distance (multiples of 100 ft) require stepping up your wire size every 100 ft. You did mention using the "Correct wire size" but you can get in trouble thinking that a #12 wire is good for 20 amps and forgetting to calculate the distance to the load.....etc (2) When you drew your load panel you didn't show your Ground being attached to a ground rod, building ground or plumbing ground (copper or steel pipe) If I have a subpanel more than 100 ft from the Main Entry load center I create another grounding point.

Great explanation of resistance verses impedance. Yes, do a video on capacitance, inductance, reactance. Explain what each component is and how it factors into a circuit, should be very interesting.... Use these terms and equations in the RF world as well, now that’s when it gets really interesting!

That's way too vague of a question to be taken seriously. You expect a certain voltage ± a few Volts. but if you have resistance in the circuit you'll get a lot less. Usually caused by a loose wire somewhere in a wall. This is very very bad because high resistance = hot which might mean 🔥. End of lesson

Hello, great theorey, would this be the same as inductive reactance, dues to the back-voltage? I wanted to run a number of appliances from a 7.5 kw gen so I put upper and lower heaters in wtr htr in series and that brought down the current to 15 amps and the htr now consumed 3600 watts, the qwater was somewhat warmer and I had more power for other loads.

2 things I've long found odd: 1. We usually use impedance rather than conductance, which is a much more sensible concept. 2. Many instructors use equations as explanations. Equations are descriptive and predictive; they are not explanatory. (E.g., ask most instructors what a resistor is actually doing to voltage and current. Most refer to Ohm's Law rather than explaining what's actually going on conceptually and causally.)

Hey! Thanks for doing this. Very useful and helpful. The question I got is - when R goes up then I goes down. That’s clear. But as you say here when I goes does then R goes up… is that accurate? I've watched and learned a lot from your videos.....Thank you for putting the content out there....I have a question, though. I am a retired firefighter, who use to work on fire trucks from the 70's,...before they did things like putting computers in them. Good old diesel engines, no computer controls, etc.... We had a gentleman who loved the fire department, and he was an electrician. He would come over and offer his services to us for free. He was an industrial electrician. One of out ladder trucks had a stand alone, gas powered generator, that he discovered was grounded POSITIVE, not negative. He does not know how we ever didn't get zapped, standing in water with our corded flood lights. If the Vehicle was negative ground, and the generator was grounded Positive, how did they operate at the same time. My mind cannot get wrapped around this...Does this make any sense to you?
