What is racism really and why is it still around? | DW News

Germany sees itself as a liberal country, and is perceived in 2023 as much more cosmopolitan than before the turn of the millennium. Since the 2006 World Cup, it has often been said that "Germany has become more colorful." Given the rise in diversity in the media and in politics, observers might get the impression that racism is waning in the country.
But black people still face racial discrimination of all kinds in Germany

I work as a delivery boy in Germany and I am an international student from India. I experience it a minimum two times a day I work outside. I am called curry, chocolate, coughing infront of me as a group and then all of them laughing at me and at the end saying get out of my country. I experience it more from the young people or the teens here. There’s a high need to think if the German school education system is doing enough to change their ideology. In the beginning it was hard and and it made me sad. Then I was thinking racism is everywhere and this is what I signed up for when I moved to another country (though I haven’t 😂) to now it’s just a very normal thing here living in Germany. I wish if the people here had so much problems they could also fight with the Government for not taking any tax from us 😜 And the Polizei here , all the times I had to go there for a missing or stolen bag to the police office they were really good but in public they always treat us with an extra eye of suspicion. Germany along with Covid and all other personal problems have mentality affected me to a limit where I had a mental breakdown and even thought about suicide. But getting though it later is slowly making me stronger and very self independent where I just don’t care about all this and looking for a better meaning about my life. One more thing I wanted to add ,here in Germany the govt and people talk a lot about integration of foreigners to the society and culture, personally I don’t have any problem with the culture or society, Me spending my money to learn German will not integrate me nor doing the integration courses and learning the politics ans history will, it’s all good to know and to learn but nothing should be one way where we are doing everything to integrate and the people here don’t want us. It should be a two way thing where both the people here and the immigrants should work together to share there culture, love and wellbeing.

The problem is everyone who come here for studies or for professional or personal reasons is not to become citizens but you people treat everyone that way. Besides the world is for everyone even the animals and the plants. Its never one way!!! World is a Global village. Germany sells there cars to even the poorest country in the world and I believe everyone does things fairly and nobody is going to grab anything from you. If they do there are laws in place for it. This doesn't happen in Germany or other Western European countries, only against people of another race(different looks or skin color)... it also happens against anything else, which is non-German or better said, "non-local"! For example... Eastern Europeans, which look more or less white(blond haired and blue eyes) are also despised and receive more than a mouthful of hate oriented speech! I left Western Europe for good, almost 9 years ago... virtually nothing's changed ever since! I am a white man, with a more or less Nordic appearance(open hair, white skin and blue eyes), I'm just born & raised in Eastern Europe, that's the only major difference... after I learned the local language fairly well and could speak it without major mispronunciation compared to the locals, some even mistook me for one of their own(a local), until they found out I wasn't! Different name obviously and not wishing to deny my heritage at all(strong roots), after they would find out about it, their behavior and conduct towards me, changed instantly and fairly visibly... it's just how it is, when you're from some place else!

I don't think they are oblivious, but rather extremely defensive about the subject. I've lived in a few countries, and the usual reaction of many Germans when talking about episodes of racism is, very often, a defensive one, as if they felt personally attacked or threatened about other people speaking about suffering racism in their country. Another usual answer is immediately trying to trivialize that experience, saying that it could happen to anyone regardless of their race. This, I think, just makes the problem worst, because they feel such panic about being labeled as racists that they just turn a blind eye to the issue.

Racism is just not the word enough to describe differentiation among human beings. Strange looks, upfront rejections, humiliations, disrespectful behaviour and attitude towards someone not of the the same culture… and a lot more keeps happening irrespective of how many awareness camps are run and media efforts. Racism from adults is even passed unto the youngest generation even before they know the meaning of it! With globalisation rapidly spreading and broadened exposure to more cultures still not paving way for humans to realise the basic fundamental of life to respect another fellow human! Living in Germany, I must say there are a lot of people who respect each other but a lot more who see a person of a different culture as a threat in the community! It is true that each community or region has its differences in own living styles, values and characteristics, both a fair mix of things to admire and things to do better at. Exposure to each other’s cultures, is an opportunity for one to alter his life and standards. It is a sad fact that the country needs foreignization for growth of its economy but the society builds walls of discrimination and not just blocks one’s own exposure but also that of the other, in adapting so many things from a great nation like Germany!

Racism simply because it’s a different culture isn’t really true, though. I never see ethnic Western Europeans complain about East Asians despite them being numerous and having vastly different cultures. The issues arise when some cultures come in with values that directly *conflict* with the local values. Not all cultures are the same and some values don’t mix well. But people are naively ignoring this.

@Agnes, that is a very astute observation. I think "racism" keeps popping up because people notice that things get worse in many ways when they abandon certain views and policies that are considered "racist." When societies have a healthy degree of "racism", they often grow stronger. Look at how China grows stronger by doing Blackface shows every Chinese New Year.

I think Ai Wei Wei had shared his experience when he was living in Berlin in some news article. Now he has left Germany for Britain. Even though Germany is still one of my favourite country, one still has to be careful when they are a minority or of skin of colour. I have watched some Datteltätter video, which I find it quite funny. "Und, woher Kommen Sie eigentlich", or something like wir ihr, so hilarious.

Racism is unacceptable, but being "different" isn't appreciated in any form. I have been told that all white people should leave Africa and my Wife has been spat at in Egypt because she was not wearing a hijab. Until we're close in colour, culture and behaviour, we may all face being attacked for being different

    - People have preferences. it is not always racism. - People attacking the ideas of immigration or refuge not necessarily attacking a person from different race for hatred. - Ideology is not race. when people r not comfortable with people with head scarf, it is because they have vastly different mentality & personality. - People have the right to live in a homogeneous harmonic culture. when u say Germany, most people should have common culture, history & heritage. people accept few others but not lots of others.we must respect people's emotions. it worked fine in America because Americans were always immigrants. it will not work well for Europe. - inflated ego in western countries make them believe they have to nurture the whole humanity, while the future of western countries 7 its democracy is not guaranteed at all.

If you’re a model, or really despite what your profession is, you should know your target audience. Germany is a white country is it not? So adjusting your “sales pitch” is a surprise? Racism looks more like genocide. Telling someone that their look doesn’t work for your company, when the job IS the look, that’s not racist. The cognitive dissonance is that everywhere a ‘certain population’ goes crime and lawlessness follows. Look at tribal warfare in Africa since the colonization left. Things are totally better now, aren’t they?
