What is race? What is ethnicity? Is there a difference?

Race and ethnicity are often used interchangeably, but have different meanings. Race is an externally-imposed categorization based on certain physical features such as skin color and hair texture, a common ancestry, and cultural and moral attributes. Ethnicity is a self-defined group identity based on shared kinship, history, and culture.

    The government needs to remove the race question on applications. This is 2021. It is racist and ridiculous asking someone what race they are. We are all of the human race, but have different ethnic backgrounds, heritage, language, and culture.

    If WE TRULY BELIEVE that we now live in THE MODERN TIMES, WE SHOULD ALL GET OVER THIS TOPIC OF RACE. WHY NOT THINK AND ACT RESPECTFULLY, DECENTLY, MORALLY, DUTIFULLY and RESPONSIBLY? INSTEAD of emphasizing our DIFFERENCES, EMPHASIZE ON OUR SIMILARITIES AND WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMON? IT IS COMMON SENSE To have DIFFERENT PHYSICAL FEATURES, specially SKIN TONES; CLIMATE EXPLAINS ALL THAT NOW... SO DOES GEOGRAPHY, YEARLY WEATHER PATTERNS, ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY, the PRESENCE AND IMPORTANCE OF MELATONIN in our BODY. IGNORING THESE OBVIOUS ANSWERS AS TO WHY PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT SKIN COLOR IS JUST PLAIN IGNORANCE OF MODERN SCIENCE AND STUBBORNESS TO FACE REALITY; THAT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PRIVILEGE AND SUPREMACY BETWEEN PEOPLES. WE AS HUMAN BEINGS should be taking care of our home... EARTH! FOR NOW, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HAS NOT SUCCEEDED TO FIND ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE. MARS? Nope. THE MOON? Definitely not. ONLY PLANET EARTH is the PLACE THAT PROVES TO SUSTAIN HUMAN LIFE FOR NOW. THIS IS WHERE WE ALL LIVE until proven otherwise... WE AS A SPECIES SHOULD LEARN TO CO HABIT HARMONIOUSLY, and PEACEFULLY with one another... ONLY when ONE CANNOT OVERCOME THEIR ANTIQUATED INSTINCTS AND THINKING, OVERCOME GREED and SELFISHNESS, OVERCOME this BACKWARD, and BARBARIC THOUGHT PROCESSES, WE CANNOT PLAIN THAT WE HAVE REACHED THE HEIGHT OF INTELLIGENCE for this SPECIES to THRIVE AND SURVIVE. It is not too late FOR PARENTS, SCHOOLS, the RELIGIOUS GROUPS, THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD, AND THE MEDIA to STEP UP TO THE PLATE of RE EDUCATING THE YOUNG... for a BRIGHTER FUTURE. HISTORY should teach us that WAR is NOT THE ANSWER. THAT WHEN PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER, SETTING ASIDE DIFFERENCES, FINDING COMMON GROUND TO LIVE SIDE BY SIDE PRACTICING ACTS OF SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER DOES THIS SPECIES SUCCEED AND ELEVATE ITS CIRCUMSTAMCE!

    By doing so you are blatantly ignoring the differences between various groups of humans. The reason why people have such a massive problem explaining the difference between us is the fact that we refuse to use the word breed which is accurate. A German who moves to Africa and lives with the Dinka tribe is NOT Dinka genetically, period. Why? Because they are technically the same race and you could even argue that ones born in the region are the same ethnicity, however, they are clearly different breeds.

    All of this can be boiled down to a word we refuse to use, which is breed. Were the human race, our species is homo sapien sapien, and within that we have nationality which refers to the nation you are from, and we have ethnicity which is primarily your cultural background. Breed defines your common DNA and phenotype, but we refuse to use that word for some reason and therefore the language surrounding the aforementioned definitions is convoluted.

    To me it seems ethnicity is still strongly tied to race, and in reality they by and large mean the same. Access to an ethnic group is generally on physical similarities in appearance (because of genetic ancestral linkages). Can a black Polish person (born, raised and culturally Polish) be ethnically Polish? Or is it only for people who have ancestrally descended in their DNA from historic Polish peoples (who were likely white)? It's an impossible question to answer, as it depends on what you mean by ethnicity, but to me it does seem most would say there has to be a racial component (or at least look similar) to be regarded as the same ethnicity.

    Now look at Uyghur, there are Uyghur who are Caucasian-looking, there are Uyghur who are Asian-looking (Oriental) ans there are some who are the mixture between the two. It is quite funny when Americans love to talk about Uyghur, but don't know about their unique feature of multiracial ethnicity. Some of Turkic ethnic groups usually are multiracial because of intermarriage and their ethnogenesis happened after those intermarriages

    If said person is born Polish, reared in Polish culture, speaks the language of the culture, and has a shared history with the culture which shapes (or has shaped) their life then yes... they are Polish. Ethnicity has nothing to do with appearance. I will acknowledge that it is common to see people of the same ethnic group sharing certain 'physical traits' however remember that correlation does not (always) equal causation. How/what a person looks like does not, should not, and definitely cannot take away from who they are and what they identify as. We need to remove ourselves from this idea that what a person looks like defines what they are. It, more often than not, misrepresents people.

  • @ATIWatchReviews

    @@KenCrocodile sorry but what you've just said is fundamentally wrong. The person is NATIONALLY Polish (or said another way is CULTURALLY Polish), but they are NOT ethnically Polish, unless they have shared ancestry and thus shared physical traits (physical appearance). You wouldn't say that different subspecies of dogs aren't affected by appearance, but for humans you do. But this is wrong, because there have been various subspecies of humans that adapted differently to the various climates of the globe, and so genetics is what it's all about and ethnicity is an expression of that. You're post is totally delusional and unscientific

    @@ATIWatchReviews i think the issue here is that you are confusing what ethnicity is. if you do not want to listen to me that is fine, but please at least look up the meaning of the word and do some research. if you do want to listen to me then here we go... let us first rule out what ethnicity is not: - it is not a science - it is not genetics - it is not ones ability to adapt to climate. ethnicity is informed by culture and history. a shared cultural experience between people. and remember culture includes (but not limited to) language, tradition, beliefs, practices, attire, and 'way of life'. you do not have to look a certain way to have an experience. you do not have to look a certain way to be reared in a certain social environment. sure how you look might make things harder/easier for you but it does not stop you.

  • @ATIWatchReviews

    @ATIWatchReviews

    @@KenCrocodile that's fundamentally false. Ethnicity has nothing to do with culture. Just like dog breeds have nothing to do with culture. It's only about ancestry. Hence why a black bantus African can never ever be considered ETHNICALLY Polish. Or a white English person considered ETHNICALLY Indian. Its simply impossible because they Dont share a similar ancestry. Sure different ethnicities within a nation can have a similar national culture but they don't have a similar ETHNICITY, which has nothing to do with culture. The definition is disputed but I feel it is clearly obvious when you ask people around the globe.
