This is pretty interesting. It is a large module! I would love to see the idea implemented as a plugin or a Reaktor thing, Voltage modular module, or other. The roll feature with a function input is basically a 2D ring mod: it applies a 2D rotation matrix to the vector of functions x and y where the angle of rotation is the input function (LFO, audio oscillator, or whatever).

Some of the sounds you were coming up with were amazing. I love the graphic interface.. shape and sound are inseparable. You have a nice set up here for this demo.. seems pretty compact in comparison to the giant overwhelming racks I've seen in pictures and other videos! I've had a bug to get into hardware for years.. I had some pretty amazing and unique drones going with just the Polygogo, Make Noise QPAS, Mutable Instruments Beads, and a couple of LFOs from the OCHD to modulate the Polygogo and Beads. I totally lost track of the time and when I eventually wrapped things up I was at it for 4 hours. I also have the Acid Rain Maestro but I need to learn it. Check out Soundemote -- They were making the plugins from this tech approach for a few years now, based on work by Jerobeam Fenderson... This is really just basic Oscilloscope synthesis. The Soundemote stuff goes way beyond what this modular synth does, but its still cool to have as hardware now. Osci-Studio is a program for making oscilloscope music made by Jerobeam Fenderson and Hansi Raber. Check out Jerobeam Fenderson's youtube, Soundemote plugins, and Osci-Studio. There is a smarter every day video where he interviews them and explains a bit about how this approach to sound synthesis works. I think one thing that is being overlooked and can be very complicated in how these sounds get worked into mixing and mastering and people need to be aware of it, be careful... it uses phase-shifting to create the "Shapes" made by the waveforms. So a basic sine-wave (circle shape) bass note may seem like a regular clean bass note sine wave, but it is not, it is phase-shifted between left and right stereo signals 90 degrees out of phase... if this gets translated back into the mix and converted to mono for a subwoofer reproduction of the bass, there will be a lot of cancellations and other issues. While I love this type of "visual" approach to sound synthesis in all this oscilloscope music stuff, that is the one thing I think needs to be a warning to take into consideration, all of the sounds are going to have lots of aspects to the waveforms that are 90 degrees out of phase between left and right channels.

@@MaxChromaColor I did see that smarter every day video and it absolutely blew my mind! But that sort of stuff is way way behond what I want to invest in it in time. I'll definitely take a look at SoundEmote, and not only because that sequencer they have totally drew my attention... Looks wild!

@@MaxChromaColor This. It surprised me that it never gets mentioned. Of course cancellation becomes less of an issue when you start using teeth and also smaller sides numbers which I guess is what this synth aims for, very harsh and noisy sounds, but it's worth noting nonetheless.

Some questions that are hopefully interesting and easy to test with the module in front of you: Is there any way to get externally modulated through-zero FM/PM? (Say, can negative CV into Roll send it backwards?) And can the pitch be pushed lower than the bottom of the slider? A highly folded output at slow-LFO rates might make an interesting modulation source.

Making an interesting synth voice is quite challenging today, and Polygogo is a great one! I'm not sure about its originality though, while I was watching your review I kept thinking of the OP1 from Teenage Engineering mainly because of the visuals on the screen.

  • @Genshi

Two totally different things. The OP-1 image you are thinking of is the Tombola Sequencer, which is a sequencer that uses a Hexagon that can open and close. This Polygogo module is using a variety of shapes that you can morph between to affect its actual Oscillators.

def. not original, seen 2d animation tapped for audio since the 60s. i (xoxos) released a polygonal vst (mota, 2.4 32 bit soz but its free) earlier this year, tho i was inspired by an article on antialiasing the algorithm from dafx. based on the featureset, i believe intelligel is the author of that work. "oscilloscope synthesis" (and multidimensional) are both regions with numerous precedents

Hey! Always enjoy your videos. I have a question about production because I manage a microscopy & microanalysis lab and we want to make some videos for outreach, etc. How do you overlay the spectrum views in your videos (and with perspective effect no less)? I want to add similar overlays of different sources to educational videos we are making of our workflows… and I really like how you have added these but in a manner so much cooler than typical picture-in-picture framing.

Ziv - The sound is interesting. The manner of visualising perhaps even more so. The form factor? Not so much. In fact not at all. Take tiny knobs, pack them close together and then cover them with a nest of patch cords. E-RM is another company whose engineers are caught up with the excitement of an idea, but forget that it is human beings with 10 chubby fingers, not spider appendages, that must operate the end product. I find it fascinating that E-RM's homepage currently shows a video by Henning Baer talking about the ergonomics of his studio - featuring lots of old style gear that was designed with attention to such concerns. Intellijel contributes to the lunacy. They argue that a product designed for this form factor "fits comfortably on your desktop; in your backpack; at your favourite coffee shop; in your jam space; or pretty much anywhere else you might desire to play." I suppose 56 pounds of Adam powered speakers go to the coffeeshop too. Miniaturisation is fine for a backpack guitar, but there was a good reason the Arp 2600 took up an entire desk top. It could have been made significantly smaller, but for ease of use and for the sake of clarity Pearlman and his team made an instrument that was about as luggable as a double bass. It's knobs, sliders and switches were designed for the human scale of both students and working musicians. I realise that the Polygogo is not so much an instrument as a component, or perhaps more accurately, a demonstration of the potential of an idea, but it's being sold for a pretty hefty sum. For this kind of money, the company owes the user a bit more thought.

I was struggling to understand what the different shapes represented (except the circle which is clearly a sine wave, the triangle and square which are clearly those respective waveforms). Then I read on Thomann that it is "Based on the complex two-dimensional amplitude shaping of sine waves". So it's a pair of sine wave oscillators being put through a harmonic filter, with the stages between each of the polygons representing the waveform becoming progressively closer to one or another waveform type. I guess 😆
