This has helped me to better understand and appreciate the Resident Evil games. I'm not a fan of having to be careful with my item management to beat the game, but if I just switch my perspective that the item management is apart of the game and not necessarily the combat itself, I'm more encouraged to try the earlier ones. It's like a challenge now to how good I can manage my items.

Agreed my only problem with it (I don’t know if this is true in all re games I’ve only played re 2&3 remakes a bit of re4 and re7) is the aiming sometimes mainly because I’m on console and getting headshots with a controller when you don’t have aim assist is harder then a genshin player when they see a child so conserving ammo and resources can be a pain in the a$$ to deal with

It's always so interesting to hear people's takes on combat systems, some just click better than others with people. Like I played god of war and it's combat felt annoying for me but elden ring feels exactly like what I want from a combat system. It really is different for each person.

  • @xinderx

    @xinderx

    Жыл бұрын

Elden ring is a great combat system but it requires so much concentration sometimes it becomes overwhelming. Combat evolves from "oh that guy is about to attack, time to parry or dodge" to " JESUS CHRIST THROW YOUR ATTACK ALREADY- OH CHRIST I DODGED TOO LATE. WAIT WHAT DO I DO HERE WHY AM I NOT HURTING IT? WHY CANT I DODGE THAT? OH GOD MY STAMINA" I LOVE elden ring, its combat is challenging, and requires focus. But it's such a steep learning curve from the cave of knowledge to...Well literally anything. I didn't even know how to level up since I didn't sit in this one spot till about three hours in, so I finally got the ability to do that AFTER BEATING MARGITT. It does a terrible job at explaining, and you get the ability to summon by going back to a church that you'd have been to, resting there AFTER resting somewhere else. That is THE WORST WAY to introduce a mechanic EVER. People legit have gone an entire playthrough and missed the summoning bell. Games shouldn't hold your hand, but they shouldn't let you run out into traffic either.

I'm the opposite i liked the combat in Dark Souls 1 but every other non Sekiro FromSoft game has been more boring than the previous one for me to the point that i literally fall asleep to the combat in Elden Ring its just too basic and samey to feel fun anymore after 6 near identical combat systems with 2 to 4 core changes max per game and not even significant changes at that ... Sekiro on the other hand is a godsend

At 9:46 I had a pretty similar experience in clash of clans, I was trying to beat a really hard goblin level and I couldn’t figure it out, so I took a nap to recalibrate my system and I figured out in my sleep that the mortar is better at destroying groups and if I wanted to win I had to split my barbarians up, it felt really good that I figured it out myself and that’s what I love about other games with that mechanic.

I'm not sure if there's such thing as a perfect combat system, but I think different kinds of combats work best for different games. Hollow Knight, for example, manages to have an incredibly simple yet deep combat, not in the sense of having to use lots of buttons, but that in its simplicity it has so much room to grow. Each scenario is different and requires different skills from the player, the combat yet so simple is so satisfying and gives the sensation of growth through learning

I love how you pointed out specifically the Borderlands skill tree. I've been playing it a lot recently and it has that thing that you were talking about with them, it's not too bogged down by random percentages and numbers. The trees actually mean something unique and different, and depending on which tree you upgrade your fighting style can vary from good cover and high health to all out attacks

It had stuff like "do 2-10% more headshot/melee damage" but also stuff like you said, where it unlocked certain abilities that drastically changed how your character fought or affected enemies differently. That is what made leveling up or finding a good kind of weapon fun.

Anarchy builds for Gaige/Mechromancer were hysterical. My bullets went everywhere but where I aimed them, but they also had auto-bounce and homing, so it usually turned into a barrage from every direction all closing in on the unfortunate soul about to be erased from existence from the +1050% damage bonus bullet swarm. Man I loved that game back in the day.

Borderlands worked because you could respec and the skill tree was heavily affected by the gear you found. Yes, that one level up might not mean too much, but if you undo your last 5 skill points and put them into something else then it has a big impact on gameplay. It kinda shifts the decision making of leveling up to a point in the game where you have time to think and strategize instead of in the middle of combat.

Great video. I'm currently playing through Ghost of Tsushima and it has some of the best combat I can remember playing. Rapidly swinging your sword at enemies will get you no where, you have to be patient, read their movements, and wait for an opening. Know when you can parry and when you have to dodge. The combat evolves as you learn new stances and switch between them on the fly based on the weapon that the enemy has, which becomes chaotic when you are surrounded by multiple enemies. I even discovered that big brute enemies with huge shields, lots of heath, and combos unblockable attacks... you can one-hit them if you manage to fire an arrow past their shield and hit them square between the eyes. HIFI Rush my favourite combat in my opinion, the slowly adding enemies, mechanics and regular new moves keeps it feeling constantly fresh, all while making sure to time all actions to the beat. The bosses ramp up the spectacle and difficulty perfectly and the different knockbacks, effects, and STUNNING visuals make every fight a fresh treat

@@CircleToonsHD Circle, I think God of War 2018 contradict or do not fulfilled the points you've made. Agency, GOW confines you to a linear passage while also incorporating weapon specific enemies. Imbalances, the game gives you the same enemy types throughout a playthrough just with higher stats. Evolution, it's rather limited but grants the allusion of complexity through the branching skill tree and earning runic attacks. On a related note, I have to say that "button mashy" is a criticism of yourself because the choice of attacks are reliant own your creativity. Clarity and Control, the FOV. For a series that relishes on the one man army trope, it's utterly confusing as to why the devs agree to limit it with a tightly frame camera. I get the idea of complementing narrative but the band aid solution of giving threat indicators already compromise that. And for a melee focused game, the screen gets messy if players attempt crazier moves against multiple enemies as it is filled with motions and particle effects. Also, we lose manual jumping because of this.

I really think the infamous and more specifically second son, has a really strong game mechanic, with the unlocking of new powers through your play through, the need to manage experience points and time to better yourself and your abiities, the choice to be good or evil, and in general some pretty nice graphics and a wonderful story line. Things make sense and the reasons for why and how things evolve durring the game are well explained. I recenty went back to paying the game after a year or two away, and after playing around again the controls are intuitive. There are some things that can get repetitive over time, but with the ammount of enemies coming at you in battle, you are constantly faced with the need to expand your arsonal and use the other abiities raather then just button smashing the attack button. The cooldown effect also adds a nice edge to the game in intense situations, its not intrusive yet provides an extremely clear message of hide, block, or run before its game over. Overal i realy enjoy this game and i woud highly reccomend infamous: second son to anyone :)

Take for example hornet at first you die almost instantly but after a few fights you start dodging and a few more you feel so good dodging hitting dodging hitting again. But some bosses are just cancer for example traitor lord made me want to quit until I finaly beat him. But I truthly love the combat in hollow knight. But some sections like white palace are straight up just pain.

One of the best combat I found in a videogame was in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Something that I like in a combat system is an intuitive control scheme that still has enough depth for you to learn the ins and outs, variety of enemy types with their own weaknesses and freedom for player expression. This game uses not only its items/weapons and abilities to aide you in combat, but the environments as well: you can trigger traps against enemies, use parkour to hit them where they can't hit you or, if you are on a balcony, just grab them and throw them off the railing.

The part about not letting the player getting too comfy reminded me about Metal Gear Rising so much because the start of the game you dont really mind mechanics like parrying but then when you reach Monsoon and Jetstream Sam you realize how important parrying is and the game tells you to go for it whenever you can and to me thats good game design and gives the player more and more freedom on how they play

Also another thing that they weaponize comfortability in that game is that up until the sundowner fight despite sundowner being really easy unlike all bosses previously he is slow tanky and does a lot of damage where all the bosses before him are fast agile and the differences between the combat of sundowner and all the bosses before it causing you to have to adapt to a whole new type of bossfight

I remember googling how to kill a certain boss once as a kid. Turns out he was super weak to bombs 5 to be exact. I died 15 times to him and gave up the game. 3 Years later I owned his hide with 3 bombs and 2 bullets in the head for good luck. Just remembered it's Borderlands 2 The Skag Mother Boss.

"Perfect Videogame Combat" is when every neuron in your brain is lit up and you're pouring every ounce of your adrenaline, reflexes and combat mastery into a fight. Examples of this in my opinion are Orphan of Kos [Bloodborne], Vergil [Devil May Cry 5], Moon Lord [Terraria], Isshin, the Sword Saint [Sekiro] and basically any late-game shootout in Doom Eternal.

One of my favorite games when it comes to combat is a game called kingdoms of Amalur reckoning. If you go down the warrior path you keep the dodge roll you start with, but if you go mage or any of the mage subvariants you get a short range teleport. As you put more points in the classes you get new combos and attacks. Every class has its own spells.

i believe dark souls series has nailed the best gameplay for some players expecting in the adventure genre as you cant button smash your way, has many movements and even combo like light , heavy , and special attack for both single and double hand. it has lots of weapons suitable for their builds and every dark souls game has that unique style of gameplay and lots of other amazing feelings you feel after defeating that god damn bossfight

I mean I guess, as long as it does not overrun other ip, im fine with the combat. I finished demon's soul and it was fine I guess. But when I started dark soul, I got my ass kicked. Which is fine. But the sheer amount of death is personally too much. I felt like in demon's soul, the game was great when the game was hard, but not when it was HARD. I feel that difficulty is like... Nsfw. Bdsm. If its too gentle, then its boring and might as well do the real thing, do it to harsh and it just hurt but do it in between and it work great. Demon's soul is for me(except the two manticore, the big lava dude and false king alan) the exact right amount of difficulty. Dark soul is too much for me. And no, im not willing to get good. I just don't enjoy the process of getting good in dark soul unlike demon's soul. Now, im not asking them to put an easy mode. It would destroy the point of souls game. You can't go into a souls game and asking it to be easy. Souls is for souls fan and I respect that. My problem is, when that souls philosophy come to franchises that did not have that way of doing thing. Like darksider 3 or doom eternal. That is when I will complain. You have your thing, we have ours. But yeah. Souls combat is great. No wonder people try as best as they can to copy it.

If I had to choose a favorite. I would say, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria has the combat I like the most. Battles are a tactical field, with some even acting as a mini dungeon. You can get more diverse, by splitting your party, but you have to be careful. As they have to be close enough to chain into their specials. The collisions are smooth, and offers quite a range of combinations. Then when getting into their specials, this is when it truly gets amazing. The visuals, the camera angles, the collisions, dialogues, etc. Everything playing on its high point, with the soundtracks really bringing this up to its peak. It truly makes you feel excited. And as the game goes along, knowing when to use this becomes important. As bosses will use their own as well. A bunch of setup is necessary. And even then, you have to be careful. Due to how stat gains doesn’t affect anything much until late game, where you need to grind for it. And even then, doesn’t do that much. A close second would be the first Valkyrie Profile game. These games really allow you to experience the action in a way I feel many miss nowadays. They also had a great sense of progression. Nibelung Valesti. Take the first game for instance, you start with the first version. The second version comes close to the mid game. With the final version representing Lenneth’s ascension. In the second game, a bit more thought was put into it. The first version is Alicia’s version, the second comes close to the end. Where it develops into the traditional form, felt it shoulda been the other way around really. The last version is when she becomes Valkyrie. This is in the finale as well. This more or less representing the freedom of souls, or something like that. Anyway, in each instance, they take the action to the peak. And even in smaller instances, they know how to make the player excited. As well as…kinda afraid of the beating they might take. The best of both worlds. 😂 Another good example would be Grandia II. Where the action is engaging, interacting with the tactical system. Millennia’s attacks each brings about a rise in emotions, and the cutscenes done are just amazing. It makes you want to engage with it. Each character gets their own as their last skill. Except Ryudo, who gets a more faster one. However, is the most powerful one for the second half of the game. All of these had a meaning behind it as well. And I think this is where the issue rests. A meaning behind it. If action is meaningless, it becomes forgettable, and or disliked. If the action is meaningful, it will be praised, and fondly remembered.
