Rubberhose 3 seems a major update for animators who have to animate animals; it also seems to be a lot better for outlined artwork (easier than limber) and the feature of duplicating, scaling and being able to use controllers outside of the comp also looks amazing. I think you might not see it as good substitute because you already invested in lots of plugins and tools, but for someone starting, will be ONE great tool. This said, I'm thinking of buying it, since I need to animate outlined animal illustrations in Ae very often and the only way I could do it until now was frame by frame. I haven't tried it yet though, so let's see...! Thanks for this video John !

Thanks for your thoughts. There are a few points I want to address. 1. Rubberhose's dog leg preset is neat but isn't really capable of much beyond a simple movement. It kind of falls apart as soon as you start to do anything slightly more complex then walk animation. It doesn't bend and flex like an actual dog leg. The segments between bends stretch and shrink etc,. If you're a serious animal animator, you're better with DUIK Angela. 2. I disagree with your notion that I simply prefer Limber because I am invested in a bunch of tools. I prefer limber because I believe it is a easier, more capable, better tool for character animation. I've used Rubberhose. I used Limber. Limber is simply better, and can certainly be ONE great tool for beginners. 3. Right now, the only thing RH has over Limber, is multi-bend limbs. While that is cool, is really only for niche situations. I'm not willing to give up something as essential to animation as FK, for multi bend limbs. 4. I'm not really sure what you mean about the outlines. In almost everyway I can think of adding outlines to RH3, you can use the exact same method to add outlines to Limber.

@@TheKeyframeAcademy Hey again John, thank you for taking the time to answer :) and for giving your experienced insights. I will then get familiar with Duik Angela and I agree with you that FK is an essencial feature to have, so hopefully RH3 will be updated with that soon. About the outlines, I just saw that you made a video covering Limber's style presets library, it was released more or less at the same time of your course so I didn't see it (?) - so weird. I will dig more into that, I thought that was something new in RH3 (although its interface seems a bit more polished...) Another thing I will dig deeper in your videos is to understand Limber's extract button - does it allow us to scale characters in other comps? That's the only thing I'm missing, I think. If so, I'm sold to Limber. I already have it anyway, but I would love that there would be a more searchable library of videos describing all Limber's features - you could (should) be paid to do it, honestly. Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and defending great tools. Keep up the great work !

@@beatrizcosta3243 Limber doesn't have an extract feature, but DUIK does, and it works with Limber. Also Rubberhose's extract feature supposedly supports Limber but I haven't tried it out myself. And yes, when you extract controllers, you typically are able to scale the nested comp just fine, although its been a while since I've had to do that so I don't know if there are any hiccups or not.

New subscriber here: Thanks, John, for really helping bring me up to speed on character rigging! Deeply appreciate your insights and advice. To that end and specific to your citing of Rubberhose 3's multi-joint abilities to provide you your most satisfying finger animations -- and at the same time your preference for Limber when it comes to Front Walk Cycle creation: if you wanted your fingers to do the walking in various directions -- even sort of Go-Go dancing -- including "straight on" as in a Front Walk Cycle, would you combine abilities from Rubberhose 3 and Limber to get your desired result? If so, and if I want to create such animations, am I going to have to pop for both plugins? Thank you, again, so much, for your articulate, reasoned instruction, and for any, generous thoughts on my quandary.

If you want to do anything with fingers, I'd stick to rubberhose. I'm not sure how one would go about combining the two for animations like what you described.

Would you use limber to animate limbs with >2 joints like in insects for example? In a project like that, what software/workflow would you recommend?

The fact that RH doesnt have FK is really bad. You mentioned that Limber has that option, there is any video in the channel talking about it? I use Duik for rigs but I'm looking for a simpler tool to use in some projects. Duik is excelent but can be overhelming sometimes...

Good point. Its a different approach and that is fine. Some people swear by RH and that is okay. But for me, I need FK, so its a deal breaker.
