What is Metadata?
What is metadata, why does it matter, and what can we do with it? Time to develop a new superpower! Please, just use it for good.

At the AGO's library, the librarians also associate other metadata info to books like - mentions to works and artists in our collection, exhibition history, collections of other museums/galleries, conferences/exhibitions/biennales, donors, and art-history specific keywords and subject matter. Soooo amazing it makes my research so much richer and smoother.

Except what you're talking about here is data and not metadata. The main metadata you'd find in a library book is from the library's stamp to say who owns that copy of the book. You'd also find a date stamp of when the book was due to be returned. That is metadata - as would the Dewey classification number for it.

Theres a difference between metadata and microdata?
Love it, Ben! Metadata is one of those strange buzzwords right now, isn't it? Looking forward to seeing your tattoo session!
Amazing info and easy to understand! Thank you so much!
Thank youuuuu, for explaining beyond “data about data”
*Winks back * You're the best. Also, now I am compelled to add a better citation for the Shakespeare books to the description for our video. I am so excited for your metadata series. -Colleen

Yes. That's the way I understood it when it was introduced in conjunction with RDA cataloging rules and FRBR.
You have a very humanistic view of meta-data. To me, it's much like markup language that works in the general Internet. In that context, metadata is information that marks up, or adds significant value to, some data that preexists.

Spoken like a true cataloger :-) As a Systems Librarian most of my day is either creating metadata or fixing the connections in the system that uses that metadata. Yes there is LOTS of metadata about people in their accounts. Library patrons for example.
Yay for a Colleen shout out!

While hastagthis was quite disappointing, learning about the Musqueam people was fun.
I got my meta cleaners primed and ready for social media. Never know when the platform wants to "extract" information from photos and videos.
That intro music so subtlety reminded me of Pinky and the Brain.
This meta-data thing is pretty spooky. Kind of like Einstein's belief that quantum mechanics is spooky compared to relativity.
It's because I like hearing your voice and seeing your face :O)

Hmm. . . I would have to conclude based on that data that you were a regular participant in political forums and have, in fact, traveled to one or more industrial cities in America. The metadata confirms it! :P

I'm a studying library student and used your videos to help make my decision on what to study. I've also told some of my teachers about you, just incase you were unsure how weird of a place the internet is, some librarian teachers in Melbourne, Australia have now watched you talk about tattoos and metadata and know about your very real relationship with Steve.
