My Uncle was Marine Recon in Vietnam. I was told to not ask him questions when I was a kid and I didn’t. I heard he was brave but that was it. I found out right before he died that he had 4 Bronze stars and 2 Purple Hearts among other medals. I found a picture of his 1968 unit in Vietnam on eBay after he passed. Uncle Archie was a humble bad ass

I passed a Recon weekend selection course at Camp LeJeune in '75 and as I met the requirements (Expert on Rifle Range and first class on the PFT...I was maxing the PFT), I got the 1st Sgts. blessing to get into the Recon pipeline. First stop was Recon Indoctrination...a 6 week course known as boot camp on steroids, lots of yelling and lots of humping and running and swimming. Next stop was BRC (basic Recon Course, over half my class was dropped on the first day which was pool test day) I reinjured a stress fracture on my left shin that I had in boot camp. I barely passed the last timed Go/No Go hump, just making time. After that it was Rubber Boat school, and then Pre-Combat Divers school (a real ball buster and you better be a tremendous swimmer...lucky for me I was a surfer and water ski kid from Cocoa Beach Florida who swam like a fish and was very at home in the ocean and lakes and pools). Then Ft. Benning for Jump school. which was like a fun vacation, the PT was light and the chow halls were like 5 star restaurants. The 5 jumps were a blast. The army Instructors and jump masters were all real pros though, no messing around. But it was super fun. In between all the schools lots of field and class room work with 2nd Recon Battalion on the beach at LeJeune. I was sent to Navy SERE in New Hampshire mountains and Combat Divers school in Panama City. I was deployed on one Med cruise and spent a few months on Okinawa doing Jungle warfare Recon Training and some preliminary advanced marksmanship training that was for Recon Marines scheduled for Scout Sniper school, I never got sent to SS school but the prelim training was very good. Had I reupped I could have gotten Ranger School and/or Scout Sniper school but after 4 years I was ready to get on with my Engineering College where I had already been accepted to Georgia Tech out of H.S. (a recently retired Aerospace/Computer Engineer who spent 34 years with a large American defense contractor's Aero and Missile Systems companies).

I spent 13 years in lejuene with my ex-husband. He was in infantry the to force recon. He did 20 army and navy schools in 20 years. Force recon men they were crazy. They would drink all day and p a ck parachutes.

that was inspring. as a former 'super grunt' mid 1980s, charlie company, 2nd Recon, HELL YES!!!! RIP School wasn't especially long but we lost 80% of our group in the first five (5) days of RIP in the pool at mainside, Camp LeJuene, NC. Back then they just started you in the water for five days and weeded all the 'not super good water guys out.' We were running from Onslow Beach, 12 miles each way, to swim all day and try to pass the water part. There were 10 of us who went to week 2, started with 59. Think we finished with nine (9). Once you got through the water part in 5 days you were half way there. I did not like the five mile 50 pound sand pack runs the rest of the way - along the beach in the sand - got used to it - i had a towel for the blood from the shoulder straps.

Probably my most proud professional accomplishment is earning the title: Recon Marine. 3rd Force Recon 1991-1995, 1997-2000. 0321/8654/2531 ABY

Where were you stationed? My father was a Force Recon Company XO in Lejeune as a Major during that time frame. For some reason the Company Commander was a Lt. Col. I never looked into why the ranks for the officers were so much higher than a typical company.

My class started with 78 students for BRC. We finished 35 in the Pacific Ocean in Jan.

I think this video did a better job explaining what a Recon Marine is then I have ever been able to verbalize. And I was a Recon baby for 10 years lmao. Thank you for the video :)

It seems an anachronism to de-label Recon as special operations. Before SOCOM, Recon would have been easily classed as special operations, though the Corps avoided such dichotomies within the branch. Looking back at Vietnam, MACV-SOG was arguably a joint special operations unit, and Force Marines contributed. Recon guys have even contributed to tier one units like Delta. I think a better explainer would be to say that Recon is a non-SOCOM special operations entity, exclusively employed by the Marine Corps, rather than complicating the definition. We can mute this with Special Operations Capable (SOC), but MEUs in general can be classified as such, including less capable units than Recon. In short, I believe in calling as spade a spade. Just my two cents.

If anything yours complicates it even more. To those who understand how the command system (which majority don't) works, it makes sense. As for the SOC definition, yeah I don't like it either. I just think that it needs to be dropped altogether. You are either SOF or you're not, there's no need for this middle ground which I think is where the confusion starts. Just keep it within MEU and drop the term. Not everyone is capable (not saying they are not) nor is required to be SOF.

@@Fight4MyCountry I concur that the SOC designation is antiquated with regard to the MEU overall. I am a professional historian and have been researching special operations forces since the early 90s. It seems that the greatest dichotomy with reference to being "Special Operations" has largely come in the last decade, which has sidelined the very nature and capability of Marine Reconnaissance. With regard to the command structure, there is no ambiguity in stating that Marine Recon is not under SOCOM or a part of broader Special Operations. Yet, not all special operations is or needs to be SOCOM, which is the distinction I am making. Before MARSOC, Recondos were nonetheless recognized as operators. Individual and short-term unit contributions of Recon Marines were periodic within SOCOM since its inception, even as the Corps retained command of Recon organizationally. Heck, Recon Marines have even been added to SOCOM's Commando Hall of Heroes, such as Major Jim Capers. Plus, many of the tactics and capabilities of broader SOF were innovated within the Recon community. In short, I am defending a lineage that predates SOCOM and has always been elemental to special operations, despite whatever command Recon serves under. Blessings.

Marine Recon will always be special ops. It's just that the Marine Corp Commadant elected to state officially (1980s) that the Marine Corp itself was Special Operations, we have no special Operations groups. Then Navy UDT divers become SEALs. They got the movies and the fame

In Vietnam Marine deacon had the highest fatality rate w/65%. Yet they accomplished more high risk missions. Avg. 4-6 man teams, compared to the other SpecOps that ran 8-12+ men teams

As a former Marine, in boot camp, I saw a poster before getting my shaving cut, featuring a recon recruiting poster that was bad ass. I didn’t even know who they were at the time. I heard that is how they like it.

As a teen in the early 80s, I bought a Gung-Ho magazine showing Force Recon Marines patrolling a river on the cover. I knew they were badass…🙏😎

The Marine Corp kept the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Recon Battalions silent (1980s 1990s) because they did not want to show a spotlight and time share with SOCOM. Marine Corp leadership wanted to keep the Marine Recon battalions (called super grunts) exclusively, to support the greatest element, the search and destroy missions conducted by the rifleman (Infantry), tanks, artillery, mortarmen, helicoptors, and jump-jet Harriers. They call it a MEU today

Wow these guys are freaking awesome they probably are dipping and popping crayons as much as someone who is popping pain killers down the hatch while going through selection.

Enlisting in a few months with a 6 year marine infantry contract, hopefully get to try out for recon down the road

Class Leader BRC3-96. I was already a salty 10-year Sgt when I went and trained like a madman before getting my slot for BRC. We graduated 4 guys with the 0321 MOS. The class stared with 30 or 40 guys and we dropped about 1/3 at the pool. The rest (mostly) failed or dropped from injuries and the land nav portion. Went to (in this order) Dive, Ranger, Jump, SFARTAETC. I was already Scout Sniper from my 3/7 STA time. BRC was the toughest school I have ever gone through, mentally and physically. Tougher than Ranger School and getting my Masters...combined.

Why did you wait to train like a madman when you were getting ready for BRC? Are you saying that you didn't train hard when you were "just" a grunt with 3/7 I am sure your junior Marines would love to have known that you weren't giving them your best. It just proves my point. The people who go for scout sniper, recon, etc are all about themselves and showing everyone else how much better they are than the people around them. Its really all about bragging and arrogance. If you were a real leader and real Marine you would have trained as hard and worked as hard and led as hard in 3/7 as you did in recon. I knew douchebags like you in the Corps and it never failed to show through how much disdain the recon and scout sniper guys had for line grunts. It also never failed to amazed me how many times i read in Marine Corps history books that recon called up grunt units to come save their asses when a mission went bad.

I'll never forget talking to a Recon guy in the chow line on my first MEU very humble dude by the way which is surprising some guys are total d****, He said by the time he finished all the schools and a tour his contract was up. I also knew a couple guys try out but like you said got injured. I had the privilege as a young boot to do a working party for Recon guys it was so high speed. We saw em jump from a Helo at night, we played the aggressors in combat town, then set up targets for them and watch them do tactics in the "kill house" with LAPD swat, best working party ever! @@thewatcher4552 Most of the guys I worked with were pretty professional. After a training cycle or work-up, recon can be very humbling. We did a lot of stuff and you learn to look at yourself in a pretty fair way. We all had our strong points as well as weak points. Once you accept that, it's a pretty good time.

If you were a Hollywood Recon Marine, before 85' there was just one place you could be found at the end of the trail at Pendleton. And that place is called Talega. Sadly I hear it's gone.

I would like to see a series on those MOSs that support combat troops as well,all the prep that goes into,say,an airborne op.

I came out of the 3rd air wing at mwcs38 el toro. as a RTO at 3rd recon Bn B Co.. Last duty station was at onlsow beach 2nd recon Bn A Co. for 9 months before discharged. I had no interest in Recon. I joined to be in the air wing.. Was a interesting fit.. The guys I served with were all out of grunt units.. Got recomendation letters from their grunt units. I asked to go to okinawa at the 3rd wing. Since I was a communication mos of 2531. This was before recon was disbanded and regrouped. I did go thru rip school. Now there are more schools for recon.. still as hard.

One added note of Truth here. During the movie heartbreak ridge. The incident where they use a credit card to call in air support. Actually happened. But it was seal team 6 in the governor's mansion. Their first mission from to seal team six was it take the governor's mansion and protect him and also to take out the radio tower to get radio free America going again. The latter was a successful one. The former was successful but had to be rescued. By Marines.

No not at all. Recon operates in support of much larger units on average and have different mission sets than seals. Recon has much less funding and spends a lot of its time out at sea when needed.

Nah, seals are basically recon marines that wright books. Except the seals don’t even have high speed medics like recon does and they cost less.

I am trying out for Recon in about 6 months. Pray for me.

Recon gets sidelined if the commander is not willing to relinquish OpCon of his Recon plt to the SOTF, or whatever command has requested them. It is dependent on Marine Corps command. Recon has been used numerous times for special missions after MARSOC stood up. eg. Magellan Star. *That does not include war time missions or recent events with the withdrawal (they were extremely active) The true argument is that Marine Corps Commanders have no idea how to utilize Recon, nor are they willing to except the so-called risk. Which is why they should be pushed to MARSOC. (2) seperate units in MARSOC. RECONDOS don't give a shit what you call them, besides a RECONDO. Or, who they work for. They just want to do work. But, the Marine Corps needs someone for their posters and videos. *For you young dudes thinking about going Recon - Recon is currently doing work. On and off the MEU's. You better be good in the water and embracing pain, misery and suffering. Also, stand-bye for 1.5 years (+) of initial schooling. Not including boot camp and ITB.

Great reply. I was just explaining that the Marines is very weary about “loaning” out their operations capable guys. Command and control they give Out rarely. And as you said, the Marines aren’t willing to risk too much with their reputation, unfortunately.

When I was in high school I wanted to be a Force Recon Marine I was talking to a recruiter but sadly I got a very bad knee injury and wouldn't take me just wasn't meant to be sadly

I'm sorry to hear that man. I am still in high school, my senior year. I talked to a marine recuriter and took the ASVAB. Now I wanted to be a recon marine but I'm worried if I fail. Because if you fail the marine corps decides what MOS you get. These guys are bad ass and it doesn't matter if they are spec ops or not.

If you really feel you'll be high value infantryman, the Army has so much infantrymen schools avaliable and programs for you to excel. Recon Marines aren't even special ops, go Army dude.

@@deiongoldsmith515 Marsoc doesnt need recon, when they have SOCOM recon resources like Ranger RRC and Marsoc is a recon unit in itself. The Marines want to keep Force recon for themselves and not have to give them out to SOCOM. For deployment wise, the Army and its special operations units are more than enough for anything that needed to be done in Africa and doesnt really need recon marines specifically.

My son is going to infantry school right after bootcamp in few weeks. He always wanted recon. Does he apply for it or get pickuped up while in soi

He may have the opportunity while at SOI to volunteer for recon selection training. There is no guarantee he will become recon. Before he is selected he already has to have an outstanding PFT score. Since you posted this 8 months ago I can assume he has already had the opportunity

@@anthonynolastname8517 He changed his mind after he finished ITB and is now in Mortarman course. His PFT and CFT were actually pretty good also the swim part. I think ITB training took a toll on his body and he said nope ain't doing that all over again and it's much harder.

Could someone explain to me the difference between recon and force recon? Is it just different command, different training, or different role? I get the difference between Raiders and Force Recon, but I've never been too clear on the difference between recon and force recon.

Used to be more of a difference. Everyone went to BN Recon. If you wanted to go to Force you had to try out and it was for more experienced guys. After MARSOC was stood up Force went away and then came back a few years later. But now it’s just for organizational purposes as the video talks about

I am a former Marine and veteran of Desert Storm. I served with India Co. 3/6 as an 0351 Assaultman ( Dragon and SMAW gunner). The Marine Corps is doing the same thing now that the Army has done for years which is taking certain units and calling them "special" while ignoring the vast majority of so called "regular" units. The only reason why special ops exists int he first place is so that billions of dollars can disappear with no accountability under the guise of "national security" and as an enforcer arm for our disgusting, treasonous intelligence services. A Marine is a Marine no matter what his MOS and the entire Corps is an elite force. In fact judging by its 248 year history the Marine Corps is the most elite and successful fighting force of all time. People will say that is a fallacy. After all would you include cooks, supply , and admin types as elites? or boots right out of basic training? I say emphatically YES! Many time in the Marine Corps history, most notably WW2 and Korea, Marine combat units suffered horrendous casualties and those losses had to be made up by admin, supply, motor t, cooks, etc. as well as boots right out of basic. These men performed brilliantly as Marines always do, not because they are recon or scout snipers or some other group of prima donnas but because they are simply "Marines". I am so tired of hearing about these special ops guys ( SEALs, Recon, Green Berets, Rangers, etc) It's mostly Hollywood made up bullshit. The first special op ever conducted by the United States was the Marine Corps assault on Derna during the Barbary war in 1805. Lt. Presley O'Bannon ( a Marine infantry officer) and his 7 Marine grunts achieved a victory so spectacular that it was immortalized in the Marine's Hymn (To the Shores of Tripoli). They had no "special ops" training and in fact were told at last minute what their mission was. They accomplished their objective through the training that ALL Marines get and because of their elan and dedication to the mission which is a Marine hallmark. My question is if Special Ops is so special why don't they train EVERYONE this way rather than a few? Don't give me that malarkey about money either, It seems we have money for everything when we want to like Ukraine. Additionally, the infrastructure is already there. This would include the mountains at Marine Corps Mountain Warfare School (which I went through in 1991). Last time I looked the mountains didn't cost a thing. How about combined arms training at 29 Palms (which i went through in 1992) last tine I looked the desert didn't cost anything extra. The military already has all the land and armaments it needs to conduct training. It also already has all the special structures such as fake cities for urban warfare training (I trained in those as well). So why is it the ENTIRE Marine Corps doesn't get the same training as so called " special ops"? Last time I looked battles and wars were won by "regular unit" not special ops. I don't remember any recon guys raising the flag on Iwo Jima.

They go through extreme training to weed out the weak. yeah joining the marines takes commitment, but to go the extra mile takes a stronger toll on the mind and body. Don’t get me wrong, Marine grunts have some incredible feats. But it’s better to have somebody who’s totally dedicated to their craft for *specific* missions. Plus most people would rather see a SOCOM team breach and clear a compound rather than a couple cooks lol. As for the training I’m not sure of the logistics of it all, but I’m sure the government knows what it’s doing and I’m sure they’re trying to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the training. Just remember not everyone is in it to become an elite, that’s the reason there’s different MOS and different schools

Because most people can't do it. If you want the Marine Corps to be elite then ask why it has to be so damned big and redundant? The US already has a big and capable land army. Why does it need a second land army that's larger than most world armies, hell larger and better equipped than most world air forces, when the USAF is already the best air force in the world. Why is the Marine Corps an independent service (only under the civilian Dept of the Navy, but not part of the US Navy itself) when it only specializes in a niche and arguably obsolete type of warfare? Why does the Commandant need equal standing to the heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force on JCF? Absolutely nothing the Marine Corps does is as important as what they do. It is absurd. Imagine if the XVIII Airborne Corps demanded to separate from the Army and become their own branch? There is no reason the Marine Corps shouldn't be drastically downsized a reinforced division, 1st Marine Division, and folded into the Navy. Keep your culture, boot camp, rank structure, uniforms, espirit de corps by all means, but get rid of most of the POGs and focus on combat arms MOS's. Let the Navy take the fixed wing aircraft too.

Check out General Discharge they have good vids regarding that. Raiders are basically under SOCOM now so they get a lot more money and get more missions as Recon is at the battalion level in reg Marine battalions.

Recon should be a component of MARSOC. Big MC doesn't appreciate them so why keep them to themselves? They already have scout snipers and LAR for recon. Why be redundant and have Recon Marines that don't ever do their actual mission anyway?

Big MC DOES appreciate the Recon Battalions, but they are short staffed always, with top guys usually going to MARSOC, Force, etc. The Recon Battalions bring in the cream of the crop (2nd Recon runs all of the combat dive schools in Panama City for all divers). But if there is a war, Marine Battalion Commanders want their own Recon element for the MEUs, assets that are not under the SOCUM embrella. To help save lives and shape the battlefields before they take large masses of Infantry (GRUNTS) into search and destoy kill zones. BTW: Force Recon now falls under Battalion Recon, within Marine terminology, they are called the deep recon company.

Never forget the fact that a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is capable of inflicting self sustained offensive combat operations for 90 days without any support from any other entity. They are built that way with all elements, land, ground, sea, therefore, they need their own recon people dedicated to the MEU only reporting to the Corp only - no time sharing or bullshit power plays from higher ups

I think you need to be in the 20-22 year range after two years in the Marines (already) with a good track record. Best formula is four year contract Marine who agrees to Infantry (0311). They don't take guys in to Recon or MARSOC off the street. You gotta prove yourself in the Corp for a couple years to even get a shot.

To be honest the US Marine Corps Recon could have been Commandos to be honest they're just like Commandos sometimes I feel like they should never make the US Marine Raider it's kind of weird and awkward to me it feels like the US Marine Recon was screwed over they could have been a lot better they could have been all of it in one bunch they had the ability they had the skills they're just like Navy Seals of the Marine Corps and yes there are more better than the Green Berets

Green Berets do it all man. DA, FID, PSYOP, SR, UW, etc Insert/Extract sea, air land, etc. Truth be told a lot of marine recon guys get tired just training or sitting on a MEU while in recon and hop over to do the sfas. Even watch a podcast and a former recon marine went over to the usaf to do that new special recon gig over there. no point going recon in the marines other to look good on a resume.

@@kars372 just to be honest they do train with Navy Seals the US Marine Corps Recon and they do go to Coronado California to train it's basically in the same place with Navy Seals train for butts and yes I think they got ripped off by the US Marine Raider and yes they were doing things before the Marine Raider they were doing a lot of things they're always the first ones go out before the whole Marine Corps before the whole Force and they're always the last man back home

@@kars372 what makes green beret affected because they use a larger Force remember Green Berets do not work in a four-man team or 10 Man team they usually work in a platoon of at least 50 man or more and yes they usually could even use the whole entire Battalion of 5,000 man you think Green Berets are just one little group no green berries golden multiple groups there's really hard to say how many they are but there's multiple groups of Green Berets both arms to the US Marine Corps Recon team do you do everything's in small teams they're the ones who Scout up ahead and always dismantle minds and explosives and take care of heavy forces before the whole Force comes in and Green Berets do not do that that's not their job you don't really scout out like Navy SEALS or US Marine Recon team

They have special operations capability. But they don't receive all of the same counter-terrorism, Foreign Internal Defense, or force multiplier training that units of SOCOM get.

First, before you go through all that Army training, you have to qualify as a Marine and then go through Marine Infantry school, then Marine Reconnaissance course, in order to qualify. Then, the easy part is the added Army training 😉

That's kind of sad that they are not special operations. They don't get a better budget and are treated like average Marines

Isnt Force Recon part of SOCOM under MARSOC for the past number of years, and the USMC caved into the DoD for that. I think only one force Recon Battalion isnt under MARSOC. But its origins in the WW2 Marine Raiders is legendary

No recon and marsoc are separate things due to poltics recon was never put under socom basically the marine core didn't want to put their units under a new chain of command and mentain operational autonomy at the cost of less funding marsoc got founded around 2006 when it was decided the marines should have a special operations unit under socom there was the same debate as earlier but the presdient stepped in a bit and the marine core releanted and compromised by being allowed to mentain recon and marscoc simultaneously marscoc took a bunch of really experienced recon members and transfered them over to the brand new marine raiders and got various other special operations units to help set things up such as training and basically overhauled the previous recon pipeline adding some additional training and there was a ton more funding given but this caused a problem since the marine core was a relatively small branch they had a hard time mentaining the size of both groups so they ended up having to delete various units and merge them with other units for recon and had the problem of splitting recruiting pools in special operations there's still alot of issues in regard to this that are still being worked on there's alot of overlap operationally in recon and marsoc but there's a decent ammount of key differences as well like the fact you can get a recon contract as a reservivst recon does more deep reconnaissance missions and recon has smaller unit elements and does less raids marsoc does less deep reconnaissance has larger unit elements and does more raids both can still do the others job but they are more specialized into two different things I would say both are very good at what they do and elite as of writing this comment recon would probably be easier to get a contract written for though marsoc would probably easier to get if your currently in or prior service

No they are not Navy Seals baby brother. If you read the history you will find out that Force Recon was there first. I know the history, 1980 to 85. Is there a matter of fact one less known thing about Force Recon. Where did the Navy Seals get their training indoctrination? How did they figure out what kind of training they really need? And a lot of other questions related to these. The Navy stayed in their own backyard. They took some pages from Force Recon. True stuff. They will never admit it. Like SEAL team six is first mission. Operation urgent fury. Into Grenada. Ask a seal team member how they got rescued at the governor's house. Buy a group of Recon Marines bringing up a tune of Marines to help them.😊
