What is MALBEC - What you need to know about this popular grape.
In this video I take a look at MALBEC
Malbec is a purple grape variety used in making red wine. The grapes tend to have an inky dark color and robust tannins, and are known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine. In France, plantations of Malbec are now found primarily in Cahors in South West France, though the grape is grown worldwide. It is increasingly celebrated as an Argentine varietal.
The grape became less popular in Bordeaux after 1956 when frost killed off 75% of the crop.
The Malbec grape is a thick-skinned grape and needs more sun and heat than either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot to mature. It ripens mid-season and can bring very deep color, ample tannin, and a particular plum-like flavor component which adds complexity to claret blends.

Hello. Who's a big Malbec fan? When was the last time you enjoyed a bottle and what would you recommend I drink. Also taking suggestions for other grapes you'd like to see featured. Cheers

You forgot to mention most importantly; Deep dark wines, such as Malbec, are loaded in wonderful resveratrol. In fact, Malbecs have the most resveratrol of all wines. Long life to you!

I’m serving a great Malbec at my gourmet burger joint in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. It’s called Caballero de la Cepa Reserva, by Fina Flichman bodega. Only 8 months in barrel, super smooth and perfect with a gourmet charcoal grilled burger.

Love your channel!! It’s insightful, straight to the point and not pretentious! Keep it up!
Malbec got me into wine like nothing else. But at first from Cahors only. To this day, still my preferred Malbecs are from that region! Cool video, as always! Thx

Thanks for this insightful vid. I'm just starting to get into Malbecs. Very delicious wines indeed!
Following on from the grape explorer's information relating to the history of the malbec grape, I thought some readers may be interested in learning how the grape variety made it's way to Argentina. The early part of the 20th century saw a lot of Italians moving to various French Wine growing areas in search of employment due to harsh unemployment conditions in Italy. Some found jobs in the malbec growing areas and, over time, some made the decision to emigrate to South America, particularly to Argentina. Some of the Italian immigrants took cuttings of the malbec vines with them and over a period of subsequent years; the planted vines were discovered to thrive in the higher altitudes of Mendoza and similar terrains. The malbec grape, being thick skinned, adapted well to the high altitude cool night temperatures and the hot sunny daytime temperatures producing a quality of wine which was much superior to the French alternative produced from vines planted at much lower altitudes. The success of the Argentine malbec has sealed the reputation of the grape variety as a stand-alone classic rather than a grape producing wine for blending purposes.

Great video and a cool name for a channel m8. So, I am at our little country store here in S.W. Michigan, (beer country btw) looking for a Merlot when I saw this exact same bottle (which was $10.99) and am looking forward to trying it later. I am not a huge wine guy (even though I make my own (100% grape juice, yeast and sugar) and I had never heard of Malbec grapes/wine before. I came home, YT'd it and this video popped up, coincidently, from the same company/winery.

Alright, I have now opened it and tasted it, I wish I could return it, not a fan, so dry it's bitter. No smooth notes detected here and the after taste between sips, is not anything to write home about. I know this bottle is not old, it doesn't sit in direct sunlight, the girl at the store said, "Oh that's my favorite"..YUCK.
Hello The Grape Explorer ! Great video, good info ! Since i am a Malbec lover and educator @malbeczone , maybe would be a good video to make on comparing tastings for french and argentinian malbecs , so your audience would be exposed to both styles. Anyway , great job on your content 👏🍷

Wanted to compare Malbec from Mendoza with Cahors'. Both had smooth tannin and high alcohol but the French had a fuller body and longer finish than the Argentinian. As you mentioned, both proved easy to drink

Malbec wines are my favorite. I think it's the only wine that has some smooth tannines without barrel aging (tannines are in the skin of the grape).

I'm new to wines and I just bought a bottle of Malbec from Mendoza that has a very strong leather and manure smell to it and has a light color. I didn't know that could be a characteristic of Malbec. It's from Orfila and cost about $15

The Bonarda you mention isn’t the same as Italy’s Bonarda is it? As always great video! As far as another grape, how about a Pinotage? I’ve seen both traditional and carbonic maceration used. Maybe talk through the differences? 👍👍🍷🍷

I have to admit I don't like wine, but I drink dark red wines because they are supposed to be good for you and I have personally noticed that my longest living relatives so far have been red wine drinkers. Malbec is okay as far as drinkability. Not too repulsive for me to drink it on a regular basis and it is a very dark red wine.
I was gifted a bottle of Piattelli Malbec High Altitude. It was delicious! I have found that the other Piattelli Malbecs that do not say High Altitude on the label, while still good, were quiet the same.

This guy's hot! 😍
Unfortunately I don't like this wine in any way shape or form, even so called "high ends malbecs". To me it takes like cheap harsh wine with weird flavors and bitter tannings. Color is too dark for me, BUT respect to those who like it. To each its own! Cheers!!
