What is Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy?

Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) is a form of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Habib Davanloo of McGill University. ISTDP therapy focuses on troubling feelings or thoughts that interfere with relationships, communication, and/or functioning at school or at work.
The aim of therapy is to uncover the sources of the feelings or thoughts that are often hidden from the client. The primary goal of ISTDP is to enable the client to overcome his or her own internal struggle with his or her own feelings and emotions about past and present experiences that overwhelm him or her due to their frightening, threatening, or painful nature.
ISTDP therapists are trained to monitor the verbal and nonverbal reactions that are triggered as you try to face your emotions and will help you face as many feelings as you can while working with you to make sure you do not become overwhelmed or symptomatic.
ISTDP treatment has been extensively researched and is shown to be effective with depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, substance abuse, eating disorders, and personality problems.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. In terms of drawbacks, ISTDP doesn't target flashbacks or specific traumas. ISTDP focuses on the emotions related to relationships and events; clients aren't forced to relive painful memories if they don't want to (although these memories do tend to be processed when client are ready). The main thing that can be difficult with ISTDP is sometimes the intensive nature of the emotions that are released and experienced. But clients most often experience relief afterwards when they reintegrate or reprocess those emotions; the discomfort is temporary. Hope that answers your question!

This is why therapy can be sooooooo wounding The dreaded "expanding the Window of Tolerance" bullshit. Jesus, what therapy doesn't pull out this old trope? - and still none of them are remotely successful. Why not try actually re-parenting your client? Seriously. Can you imagine a young child telling his mother that he's being bullied and having her respond with "You don't look upset" to see how he'll respond to that particular "intervention"? Why not just respond as a good parent would, with a hug, with outrage at the bullies and promises that Mummy is going to break some kneecaps, and assurance that they'll handle it together, and with words of praise and love for this exceptional child who's been so brave? Because the part that's hurting is very young, and responding to it with anything less than overwhelming love and adoration is nothing less than the equivalent of a cold-hearted emotional autopsy.

What you describe is not ISTDP - compassion and empathy is shown towards pain / trauma - the role of ISTDP is not to retraumatize the patient but to help them understand with the help of an attuned auxiliary ego (re-parent in your language) the complex feelings and impulses they've repressed that have become the engine to their to symptoms and character defences
