What Is id Software's Next Game?

Will there be a new DOOM game on the horizon or something entirely different from the developer that is id Software? We know that id Software is currently working on a new game and have yet to show it off to the public. Will we see a reveal at the upcoming Xbox Showcase or later in the year at Quakecon?     Just some clarification on the video. The main Xbox Showcase will be in June, but the one in April is a showcase but slightly different. I guess we'll see what happens at both events.

    Don’t see how they have a story left to tell after the events of ancient gods part2? ive heard they are doing a prequel, the events seen in the flashbacks in both doom2016 and doom eternal. Doom Slayer is trapped in hell than finally makes it out via a interdimensional gateway and ends up on Excultia.

    The Id tech 7 engine is a technical marvel.They managed to run Doom Eternal on the last gen consoles at the same resolution and FPS as Doom 2016 whilst also making it look better. If there's one thing not to worry about for their next game, it's performance. I'd say it's fairly likely we'll see a teaser during an upcoming showcase this summer.

    Yeah, its insane how the id tech engine went from mid to high end. I remember all the technical issues that plagued the version they used for Rage, the one with the mega texture system. And the 60fps lock in Wolfenstein. And then Doom 2016 dropped and it was a MASSIVE improvement.

    I'd software has always had a tradition pushing technical limits. Even though Doom Eternal runs well on lower end hardware, it scales extremely high, using max watts of a 3090ti! I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that the next id software game will be extremely demanding.

    Id software did work on Quake 4. Both Quake 2, 4, and Quake Wars are fantastic games.

    I really wish they wouldve had the time and resources to further flesh out the story and lore in the DLCs, possible books or comics, or other forms of media for the Slayer's story from 2016-Eternal, and beyond. But ID is absolutely cooking something up and i'm ready for whatever Doom or Quake or whatever they committed to.

    Good video! I did want to point out that the Xbox/Bethesda showcase is in June, not April. With id Software and their games now being under the Microsoft umbrella, I believe that it's likely that whatever they're working on will be initially revealed at an Xbox event with a gameplay showcase appearing at QuakeCon, just like they did with Doom Eternal

    Marketability would be easy for another Doom sequel purely because of Doom 4 and Eternal's success, and Doom still being fairly fresh in the minds of the general public. However, based on bits of information that Hugo Martin has said, I'm inclined to believe that Id is working on a new Quake game as a direct successor to Quake 1. TAg 2 ends with the leader of Hell defeated, all demons outside of Hell destroyed, Doom Guy sealed away, and the maykers going through the transfiguration without argent energy. Hugo has said that the maykers "turn into Cthulu monsters" after the transfiguration and that "Cthulu Lovecraft Hell" is something that he would want to explore in a game someday rather than just "horns and hooves Hell". Hugo has also said that he "doesn't want to just keep making Doom games, he wants to make more action games", he wants their next game to be intense stop-and-go combat like a monster truck rather than Doom as a fast Ferrari, and Id Software has had job openings on their Linkedin page for a "new fantasy first-person shooter". All of these things very much suggest something akin to Quake 1, so it seems that Id is putting Doom back on the shelf for now and shifting their attention over to the Quake series. TAg 2 ties up most of the loose ends of the whole Slayer saga and essentially resets the Id universe with a new looming threat. Without Doom Guy present, somebody else will have to be the hero to battle the Cthulu monsters. Also worth noting is the amount of attention that the new expansion packs have gotten in the Quake remasters. The new expansion packs by Machine Games sprinkle in new bits of lore to the main entries, and the level architecture is so ornate that I'm sure they must draft concept art before hand. It's also known that whatever game Id is currently working on, it's being co-developed with Machine Games. Although Machine Games have taken the reign of making sequels for the Wolfenstein series, perhaps these new expansion packs are Id Software's way of getting everyone ready for a new Quake sequel. 1) It gets the general public acquainted with the Quake series again, those who played the originals or those new to the series, 2) It gets Machine Games more familiar with how to make a full-fledge Quake sequel, 3) Machine Games gets feedback from fans as to what does and does not work in a Quake game, and 4) Fans get familiar with what a sequel co-created by Machine Games would be like. Machine Games also has an internal Quake mapping club, they would make levels for Quakespasm, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were involved.

    "fantasy shooter" and if they are rebooting hexen/heretic? The pacing of eternal being too fast is something I felt, like you are always on the edge and on the move and have to be proactive to be ahead of the resource management curve, sometimes doom is good while you just camp behind a corner and wipe out a gozilion enemies with the chaingun, I would kill to have a more immersive/grounded take on doom like 3 and 2016 The issue with machine games is that they are tied to indiana jones (which looks awesome) and the last wolfensteins didn't sell too hot. A dream scenario would be iD closing the wolfenstein trilogy delivery the mecha-h1tl3r fight we deserve

    Unironically would *love* a full-on remaster of Doom 3 As far as a sequel to Eternal, I think its going to involve the Wraiths and where they came from because there were a lot of suggestions that individual Wraiths were more powerful than most gods, and the World Spear is a massive ship *full* of them

    At this point, I'm willing to just trust whatever they do next. Even if it's a star wars game (which I would hate to be true) it would undoubtedly well made and fun. It's gonna be fun to get back into the swing of things, and I miss talking to everyone from the community.

    Going back to the bland formulae is what awaits us. The creative energy and pursuit of at least small-scale gaming revolutions (and the modern Doom's did those a plenty) are proven to be gone now.

    I mean, you don't need a "currently relevant" title in a series that is "eternal" because fans kept doing stuff even when the series was dormant. Focusing on what's trending on social media is not a way to get invested in a series. Doom's fanbase always had its own lore, i even wrote a post about things that wouldn't exist because of them. A new Doom would be cool but not just because you'd see the word "Doom" on Twitter's trending tab.

    I think D3 should not get a remake because for better or worse, it was always its own area of the series. Making it tie to the 2016/Eternal universe would miss the point when deep down, D3 and Slayer games might as well be seperate "tree branches" from the "Doom tree". D3 could use a better re-release that actually fixes/respects the game (As in, what BFG edition should be) and even an potential sequel should come off as "what the cancelled D4 should be" because D4 felt even too detached from D3. Any sort of revisit of D3 might as well use collaboration with D3 modders: Because anyone who already dislikes D3 and prefers the Slayer games could just stick to that side of the series, anyway. Plus, Doom was never a "universe/lore bound" series and i argue the seires has benefits from it. It's clearly a series that was mostly a "blank canvas" and that's why the series always had inconsistencies in designs, context, abstract stuff up to interpretation, obscure/almost-hidden info and so much more. If Doom was made with "lore" in mind, it would be so different, we wouln't even call the protagonist "Doomguy" since he could've had an established name. Even the current universe we got still has weird stuff going on and most people don't notice because they overlook stuff like how cybernetic demons were originally made or even BJ Blazkowicz' family before MachineGames changed it. Doomguy's face in Eternal doesn't even look that close to the classic. Plus, how people disliked some of TAG2's ideas is why Doom works better if certain games had their own version of the lore. They don't have to stop making Slayer games: They could just allow different "flavors" of Doom being made with their own designs, story, gameplay etc. Doom's universe is deep because it's not a "universe" like LOTR or Star Wars, it's a cool idea that can be reinterpretated differently. The fact that Romero's Sigil has artwork with a style not related to 2016/Eternal or even classic Doom and a story text not made with new lore in mind also adheres to this.

    Doom Year 1 could be a remake of the original games with the same amount of polish and lore as Eternal. Which I think would be awsome! Though they'd have to nerf Doomguy obviously

    The original Doom games already have the best modding scene and fans did so much with the classic aesthetic, they might as well build an universe before current id did. ALSO, never forget that Romero wanted to share unsued Doom assets but id still doesn't let him: If they can't let Romero show us a couple more unused sprites, that alone means they shouldn't bother "remake" the old games. At the very least, another "retelling" of Doom's premise might as well be another reboot. Doom 3 itself was sort of a retelling of the premise and still its own game. We also have stuff to consider like Adrian Carmack/sprites version of Doom being different from the box art, Arch-vile's face tubes or how textures like FIREBLU and certain locations can be reinterpretated differently. And stuff that could be tech related, that wouldn't work in an AAA 3D game. Eternal's "throwback" designs work because Eternal is still its own game and its "classic" designs aren't 1:1 to the sprites that much, meaning they're different ways to revisit an old concept and it beats coming up with an "ideal" take that will never be perfect to begin with.

    I think the next game of there's will be a new Quake game. Giving it the same extreme reboot and love (hopefully) they did with the previous two DOOM games and the first Wolfenstein. I say let the Slayer and his I.P. rest a little bit longer so it don't suffer from overexposure. 😈

    at this point in with quake being dead as dead maybe they could meld doom and quake together with doom being the single player and quake being the multiplayer if they arent going to reboot it. though with the cliffhanger they left us with on Quake 4 a Quake 5 would be nice

    I always thought the Night Sentinel could've been for Quake 1's setting. At that point, just have every classic Quake title (expansions included) as playable games inside Doom like they did in the Fortress of Doom (but i guess at that point, also include the rest like Final Doom, 64 and Sigil). Same for Heretic since MS owns Activision now.

    I want the next doom game to be set after tag 2 Hugo always said there are many new stories they could tell moving forward with the slayer in my opinion that would be the best thing for the franchise

    What they could try is expansions for Eternal where you play as either an ARC guy or Sentinel guy: Both would be excuses for coming up with new stuff for gameplay (weapons, items, enemies, level design ideas etc) and maybe even opportunities to revisit unused ideas or content. If they ever bring Crash to DE: Also give her a "prequel" to put her in the classic Doom universe by making it a Doom wad and then give her stuff like a classic UAC skin or anything to put her on pair with the Slayer, like that.

    @@shaunmcguire943Doomguy was originally a nameless blank slate who Romero wanted players to self insert as. "Doomguy" in itself is a fan term everyone adopted. The Slayer exists because of fanservice and it's not the comic. Look up Death Battle, people in general comparing DG to Master Chief, internet copypastas, comics by Faraz Parsa etc, you can see certain influences or material id might've used to create the Slayer. And there's always people who say "i prefer Doomguy being just a pissed off guy with no powers" or stuff like comparing him to Guts from Berserk. The idea of "not playing as Doomguy" is irrelevant when there's a lot to like about Doom already and Doomguy, again, was a blank slate with few characteristics. And the Slayer is a different appeal from Doomguy as well. Back in 2015 people even complained thinkink they were making Doomguy look like Master Chief. If we're going the path of "what makes soemthing Doom", there's still a million observations to make like how armor works in gameplay or specific textures from Hell. This is part of why it's better to assume Doom can go different ways (as long as there's a limit like not turning demons into aliens) Because otherwise, a certain level of purism might as well remove even specific vanilla wads. It's almost like a spectrum that accounts a certain level of analysis, in a series most people don't take it very seriously.

    @@Sniff738 the original doom games could have told a story of doomguy but Romero and carmack didn't want that the modern doom games are excellent way of continuing the games doomguy and the slayer are the same man and we find out in tag 2 that doomguy was born with the darklords DNA so right there doomguy always had a advantage even tho he wasn't fully a god he still had somewhat powers

    @@shaunmcguire943 The idea of Doomguy copying Dark Lord's appearence forgets that people like Doomguy because he started off as a regular guy. And even the "Doomguy face" in Eternal is less close to how it looked in the originals than even the one in QC. And worse: Dark Lord's boss fight didn't even feel like fighting another player. It's like they implement an idea people liked in other games but didn't fully commit. So much of the DL doesn't feel intentional. Is this really what people consider the "ideal" continuation of "the Doom story"? After years of everyone interpretating Doom in their own way and imagining how things could go, is it? Some people even assumed the Dark Lord would've been a bigger beast than the Icon of Sin (who at some point was seen as "the big bad" of Doom) or any of those archdemons from the concept art. DL in general is like "5 ideas at once, each could've been seperated". And Immora doesn't represent the Hell tech that was in the originals, while its context feels questionable for Hell at best, Even the Immora soldiers could've used the much better, demonic armors from 2016 MP (there's like 12 there) and their version of the Reaper doesn't do justice to how it worked in that MP mode. Again, when i say "Doom shouldn't be a lore based series", i don't mean that they should stop making games like these. More that they can still exist but have them coexist with games that just do things differently and not just for "apology" sake. Because i believe deep down id has second thoughts about this and a easy way to fix it is simply going "it's but one version of the setting", so they don't have to build their own prison over it. Like yeah, i guess "here's a version of Hayden that is not a Maykr" would come off as "sure, fine" but you can justify a game with so many cool ideas and still focus on experimentation, to minimize that aspect at least. And the original story of Doom would've stil been about the low tech UAC and Hell, since stuff like the Sentinels and Urdak are very new elements. It's like Planet of the Apes where the recent entries are a more different take in the premise but have some specific elements. Putting Doom 3 in a Tim Burton's Apes film situation where "it could be closer to the original premise but has some problems". If the Doom series was always story focused, we would never have Samuel Hayden or Khan Maykr. Most of modern Doom works because it's based on a series whose setting was never taken seriously that people don't even mind something as basic as the UAC symbol being redesigned.

    I dont think it will be a Doom game. Its really hard for them to top Eternal. What should they improve or fundamentally change at that point? I think, maybe hope, they will do a new IP, probably something open world or horror related, maybe even 3rd person. Something different at least.

    I hope they return more to their roots for a doom game. I want the more classic style of fps gameplay doom is known for. I simply hate eternal. I want a more classic style of gameplay with zero RPG esque mechanics and much larger levels that actually allow exploration.

    Depends on how they can set Quake away from Doom. These franchises primarly existed for the sake of gameplay and tech innovation, so they were always defined by specific things like "you can look up or down on this one". Because of this, the new Doom's have elements taken/inspired by other titles, be it Quake or even Turok like the platforming a bit. So a new Quake could borrow elements from Heretic for exemple, therefore making it hard to come up with how to bring back Heretic. Another thing is how the settings change, since Doom has different iterations of its setting and there's stuff not carried over. Quake could go back to the Lovecraft/dark fantasy stuff but we all know it'd have differences, even if they're not a big deal. But you know that a Blood 3 would never have the same atmosphere or personality as the original Blood, for example. To me, "taking a break from DooM" is not about the IP/brand, it's more about the fact that AAA games are "huge" in ways they don't need to be, even if the alternative does not have to be very small scall indie titles.

    I don't expect anything from them. Previously, they had a great fusion of gameplay and level design, but as Rage 2 came out, all the magic of level design disappeared and the company decided to simply increase the gameplay to the maximum and created Doom Eternal. Fast ganeplay, easy to learn, complex quick-switch combat, but... This is not Doom. Without a unique level design, it's just a shooter with elements of Doom aesthetics. A good Painkiller 2.

    2 things. First, Quakecon has been quite the nothing burger in terms of new trailers, announcements etc in recent years, so I highly doubt we'll see Doom there. Hell, we barely see Quake there :/ Secondly, that business with Mick really, really muddied the waters at id, I'd go as far as to say that the next Doom game will possibly not come from Hugo and Marty, and that Mick, will not be involved, period. I'm glad that Xbox owns Bethesda, but I'm worried that Spencer is losing hope in better games over services and play-anywhere models of business.

    @@och70 I got the idea from playing through Ultimate Doom in the Inferno episode. Some of those levels struck me as being influenced by an open world setting. In particular, E3M2: Slough of Despair.

    There are better formulas to consider, like level design taking cues from Hexen, Turok, Powerslave and Metroid Prime: "Interconnected" maps. Or at least some maps that just happen to be huge like Serious Sam, so you can add GIANT demons or bigger armies of demons to mow down like nothing. You can say that you wish modern Doom maps were bigger and not arena lock focused but that doesn't have to mean "open world". Just think of the examples i just brought up. Only reason to add open world is if you want vehicles. Not only that, a lot of open world games focus too much on size than making the map itself have purpose. That i often don't care unless it's something specific like Gravity Rush with floating cities. Hell, imagine an open world game taking place in a weird, closed megastructure like the manga Blame! Maybe the formula could've been used better.

    I would've preferred something tied to quake, it's the ip most neglected among the id "shooters". But there's the issue of the third wolfenstein since machine games is working on indiana jones, it would be cool if it was iD handling it again after all this years. If indeed it's a new Doom tho, I would prefer something less "arcadey" like 2016 or 3, sometimes in eternal I think iD went to far and there's too much going on and too many special enemies aimed at countering player's moves, especially in the ancient gods dlc. Sometime I just want to chaingun a wave of imps without thinking too much.

    So adding to the pool of regurgitated speculations videos non-stop is now meta of content creation? Or is this a news video about the Year Zero leak? You are couple months later, mate. 🤣 I knew from the beginning it was one of those 'talk much and say nothing for 8 minutes straight' type of video but I sat through the entirety of it just to prove myself there is nothing new even in terms of content work. There is no way any of this conveyor work is not AI generated.
