What is Guinness? Why is it black? What does it taste like? Questions answered.

What is Guinness? This video will be interesting even if you’re Irish as I’m certain you’ll find out some interesting facts about our iconic national drink.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.
www.buymeacoffee.com/NakedIre...
In this video you'll see a couple of pints being pulled and appreciate the process getting it in the glass - which some would claim as an art form in itself.
The Guinness people claim that it takes 119.53 seconds to pour a pint. This includes a resting period for the drink before it’s topped up. The creamy white head is produced through this resting period (and is the chemistry part) - as Guinness is unusually low in carbon dioxide, so the more prevalent nitrogen bubbles rise to the top during the 'rest' and form the head.
It gets its black colour from the roasting of the malted barley - this is similar to how coffee beans are prepared, in fact people will tell you it has a coffee flavour. This heating process cooks the sugars and the grains together resulting in the thick velvety colour.
By 1858 Guinness was being exported as far as New Zealand. The drink is now consumed in 150 countries, with the African continent consuming 40% of what’s produced worldwide. The largest market for Guinness is in Britain however (obviously trumping Ireland because of its larger population), but what is more surprising is that rather than Ireland coming second, it is Nigeria who are the second largest consumers.
While it’s on the bar settling - if you’ve paid for it you can take it away but it needs to settle before it's ready to drink.
The Marketing phrases “Guinness is Good for you” and “My Goodness, My Guinness” were coined in 1929. Indeed Guinness is renouned for being high in Iron and for that reason is often used medicinally (or that’s our excuse for drinking many pints of it in an evening). But obviously today those kinds of slogans can’t be used, Despite that, research has shown that it can prevent heart clots.
A pint of Guinness contains 200 calories which is much less that most other beers. Now that’s something to smile about.

A few years ago I tried Guinness straight out of the can (without pouring it) and I found it awful. However, I didn't know you had to pour it and let it rest for a bit. When I tried that, I discovered what might be one of my favourite beers. It's genuinely awesome! I really love every part of it, from the color, foam, taste and mouthfeel. I can only be sorry for not knowing how to actually pour it before
